2 I chose the image above from Empire magazine because I really liked the image when I saw it and wondered how dramatically I could change it to change the whole theme and mood of the image. I wanted the first image which conveyed a fun time in the desert to become a dangerous desert scene at night. I felt that the image was of good enough quality to be changed and I used a combination of filters and editing and self created layers to compose the final image.

3 Step by Step Guide: Photoshop: File> Import> Twain> Scanner > Scanner: Preview Scan Scan Type> True Colour Purpose> Custom 200 Dpi Scale> 100% Descreen Scan File> Save >Original.psd File> Save copy as> Working.psd Photoshop: File> Open> Working.psd Image> Image Rotation> 90 degree Crop tool> Select area wanted> Enter key Layer> Duplicate Layer> OK Zoom> Fit on Screen Eraser tool> Erase all parts of image unwanted (sky and yellow sign) Layer> New> Layer> OK Click Eye button next to edited layer Fill bucket tool> Select black colour> Click anywhere on canvas Filter> Noise> Add Noise> Amount = 15%> Gausian> Monochromatic> OK Layer> Duplicate Layer> OK Image> Adjust> Brightness and Contrast> Brightness= -85> Contrast = -50> OK Edit> Transform> Scale> Drag image to double it size> Enter key Image> Adjust> Invert Image> Adjust> Levels> Settings as 230, 1.00, 250> OK

4 Image> Adjust> Invert Brush> Spatter Brush> Brush size 1000+> Black colour> press once at top half of layer. Select two star layers (using shift)> Right Click> Merge Layers Move star layer below working layer Right click background layer> Delete layer> OK Press eye on edited layer again. Right click a layer> Flatten Image> OK Filter> Render> Lens Flare> 105mm prime> drag to top left corner. Blur tool> run along the image between sky and everything else. Burn tool> use to darken the image so the colours match the sky. Text tool> AR Berkley font> Regular> 8pt> Smooth> click on image> type name> select colour red> press enter Select tool, drag text to bottom corner of image> rotate slightly using transform tools> Press Enter key. File> Save. Done.

Report I started by scanning in my image from a magazine.

I used the Image> Rotate> 90 degree tool and the crop tool to achieve this.

Originally, I had just wanted to remove the yellow sign but I then I thought I would be more ambitious and replace the entire sky.

5 Report I started by scanning in my image from a magazine. Once I had scanned it in I realised it was wonky and rotated the image so that it was the right way round and then cropped the image. I used the Image> Rotate> 90 degree tool and the crop tool to achieve this. Once I had the image straightened and looking right I had to decided what I wanted the image to look like and how I was going to achieve this. Originally, I had just wanted to remove the yellow sign but I then I thought I would be more ambitious and replace the entire sky. I tried at first using the Magnetic lasso and magic wand to select the bits of the image to be removed and delete it but this didn't work because it chose parts of the image that s I wanted to keep so I decided to remove the sky the manual way using the eraser tool. So I zoomed in and got to work slowly rubbing out everything that wasn't wanted.

I then inverted this star layer and edited the brightness and contrast and re-inverted the layer to create brighter stars.

6 When I had finished rubbing away I had the white background left to fill and I decided I would add a night sky. So, I created a new layer and filled it in totally black before filling it with white spots by adding the noise filter. At this point I am hiding my background layer. I then inverted this star layer and edited the brightness and contrast and re-inverted the layer to create brighter stars. I then scaled the layer to twice its size in order to make the sky more sparse. I then did one last thing by choosing a large splatter brush and pressing once to paint some black space into the sky to make it more realistic. I then reactivated the background layer and rearranged the layers so the stars were in the background. I liked the sky but at this point realised it was too obvious what had been edited and that the colours didn't match because the front part of the image was too light. So I flattened the image before blurring the edges between the sky and everything else. I then used the burn tool to darken all the image so that it looked like a realistic night time image.

7 At this point I added a 105mm lens flare to the top left of the image to add that extra something to the sky. At this point I was happy with my image so I created some red text with my name on it to add to the corner of the image. I rotate this slightly to add a signature feel to it. I then applied an Unsharp mask filter and saved my final piece of work as shown below. I was quite happy with this piece of work and think I have dramatically changed an image to alter the mood that it conveys.
