1 The effect is called Out of Bounds or sometimes 3D Border Breakout. 1. First off you need to pick a suitable picture. Photos with a strong subject help, one that has some depth in the frame. Movement is also good but make sure your subject is sharp otherwise it won t look great later on. Remember, it must be an image you ve taken. Select a high quality image. If you are using a phone image, be sure it was taken outside in the day time and is not pixelated or noisy. 1

3 3. Right-click the layer, select Duplicate Layer and OK. This will copy the layer. 3

4 4. Double click the Background and click OK to make it a layer. 5. Open an Internet browser and search for your frame. I chose to search for a polaroid picture because my subject is taking a picture. You can use anything you want that s school appropriate. Consider your picture and choose a frame that matches the theme of your picture. NOTE: Choose a large image for your border. 4

5 6. Click picture you like to open a new window. Then click View Image. That will give you the best quality of that image. 7. Right click the image and select Copy Image. If you want, you can also save it after you copy it. 5

6 8. Now, go back your Photoshop Out of Bounds and navigate to Edit/Paste (Ctrl+V). 9. Hold Shift and resize your frame so that it s close to the size of the subject of your picture. Consider what you are taking Out of Bounds. 6

7 10. My border image already has a picture that I need to delete. To delete it, I am going to use the Rectangular Marquee Tool. 7

8 11. Select the image and delete it by pressing Delete on your keyboard. 8

9 12. The image will be deleted. 13. Hit Ctrl+D to deselect. 9

10 14. Now, depending on the frame you picked, you may need to clean up the outside of the frame a little. I need to get rid of the white around the border of my frame. I m going to use the Magic Wand selection tool. 10

11 15. Select what you want to delete and hit Delete on the keyboard. NOTE: If you choose a frame with multiple areas to delete, you can select the multiple areas all at once by holding Shift on the keyboard and selecting all the boxes that you want to delete. 11

12 16. If needed, resize your frame. Hit Ctrl+T to select the frame and be sure to hold Shift as you resize your frame. Remember, you have to resize from the corners only! 17. To make this effect work, you need to make sure that your frame covers part of the focal point of the image. That s the part that will be Out of Bounds. 18. Now, we need to skew the frame. Look at the motion in your picture, and skew the frame to match your motion. 19. To skew the frame, be sure your frame layer is selected and hit Ctrl+T to select the frame. 20. Then, hold Ctrl and drag a corner of your picture to distort it. Repeat this on the opposite corner. 21. Resize your frame, if you need to. 12

13 22. You should have 2 picture layers below your frame layer. 23. Move the copied layer above the frame layer. Your frame will be hidden under your picture. 13

14 24. Hide the top layer by poking the eye icon. 14

15 25. Now, choose the Polygonal Lasso in the Tool Pallet. 15

16 26. Select your original picture it should be your bottom layer. 27. Using your Polygonal Lasso tool, select the picture inside your frame. To do this, start at one corner of your frame and click the mouse to create a starting point for your selection. Then, go to another corner and click the mouse. Repeat this process until you come back to your starting point. NOTE: As you select, select down the middle of the frame. This will keep 16

17 you from accidently deleting your picture later. 17

18 28. Now, navigate to Select/Inverse (Shift+Ctrl+I). That will select everything outside of the box you drew. 29. Hit Delete on the keyboard. Below is what you should end up with. 30. Hit Ctrl+D to deselect the box. 18

19 31. Unhide the top layer by clicking the eye icon. 19

20 32. Now, add a Layer Mask to the top layer. This will add a mask to the top picture layer. 20

21 33. In your Tool Pallet, make sure your Foreground color is Black and your Background color is White. 34. We will hide the parts of the top layer we do not need. We want to hide it, not erase it remember, we are editing non-destructively. To hide the parts we do not need in the top layer, select the Brush Tool in the Tool Pallet. 21

22 35. After you select the Brush Tool, open the Brush Preset picker panel to select the size of the brush and the hardness. 22

23 36. Start with a big brush at 100% hardness. 23

24 37. Now, we will begin hiding the top layer to reveal the layer underneath. Remember, if you mess up, change your foreground picture to white and fix it. Find the perimeter of the frame first. NOTE: Make sure your Mask is selected and not you re your picture. 24

25 38. I want his elbow and the camera strap to come out of the picture, so I ll switch the current background color (White) to the Foreground. That will allow me to bring that part of the picture back. From this: To this: 39. Now, select the Brush tool. You may need to make it smaller in the Brush Preset Picker. 40. Unhide what you want to bring back. If you make a mistake, switch between Black and White to correct your mistakes. You can also use any of the selection tools to select an area and fill it with Black to hide the mask or White to reveal the mask. The important thing is that you take your time 25

26 and do a good job. Add a Background There are an infinite number of background options be creative. Follow these steps to add a collage background. 1. Choose pictures that support the theme of your Out of Bounds. 26

27 2. Open the pictures in Photoshop and drag and drop them into your Out of Bounds file. 27

28 3. Hold the Shift key and resize your picture from the corner so you do not distort it. 4. Move your new picture layer behind your Out of Bounds by moving the layer to the bottom. 28

29 5. Repeat this process until your background is full. The rule of thumb is to have an odd number of pictures for greatest aesthetics. 6. Now, I m going to add a black background to hide my empty space it s too small for a picture. To add a background layer, navigate to Layer/New Layer (Shift+Ctrl+N) or select the new layer icon at the bottom of the Layers Panel. 29

30 7. Move the new background layer below the rest of your layers. 8. Navigate to the Tool Pallett and your color. 30

31 9. Make sure your new background layer is selected and go to the Paint Bucket Tool in the Tool Pallet. NOTE: The Paint Bucket Tool is with the Gradient Tool. 10. Now, move the Paint Bucket Tool over your work and click your mouse. This should fill your background with color. 31

32 11. To easily blend my surrounding pictures with the background, I need to add layer masks to all my pictures. Remember, we want to edit nondestructively so we can make changes later without restarting. 12. Add a layer mask to each surrounding picture you added by selecting the picture s layer in the Layers Pallet and then clicking the Layer Mask icon at the bottom of the Layers Pallet. 13. Repeat this process until all your surrounding pictures have masks. 32

33 14. Invert each mask so you can paint on your picture. To invert your masks, select them one at a time and press Ctrl+I on the keyboard. NOTE: As you invert your masks, your pictures will hide, or disappear. 15. Now, select the Mask of one of your surrounding pictures. See the picture above. 16. Select the Brush Tool and make it a large brush with 0% Hardness. 33

34 17. Go to the Tool Pallet and make sure your brush is set to White. 18. Carefully reveal your picture by painting it on. 34

35 19. Repeat this process until all your background pic are revealed the way you like them. 20. Add a texture for impact. 35

36 21. To add a texture, copy a picture from the Internet and paste it above your background picture layers. 36

37 22. Now, choose a Blending Mode. I chose Screen. 23. To crop your Out of Bounds to 11 x 8.5 for your calendar, complete the followig steps: 37

38 a. Select the Crop Tool in the Tool Pallet. b. Under Constraints, click 8.5 x

39 c. Resize and position the Crop Tool to you re your Out of Bounds look it s best. Here, I am composing my Out of Bounds on the following the Rule of Thirds. d. At the top, right of the screen, select the Check Mark to commit the crop. 39

40 e. Now you are done! Don t forget to save your Out of Bounds for the Internet. 40
