3 Project Exuding an almost sacred feel, the staircase serving as a core access to all floors and court rooms is unique due to its extremely colourful interior Unobtrusive Lighting Solution for Listed District Court in Halle The Halle District Court is one of the most elaborate Palaces of Justice built in former Prussia and one of the most important in terms of architectural history. To this day beholders are especially overwhelmed by the unique colour and language of form of its staircase, exuding an almost sacred feel. As part of the renovation, the lighting of the staircase as a central access to all floors and court rooms was to be adapted to today s requirements. At the same time, requirements from the field of preservation of historic monuments had to be taken into consideration. Lighting designer Anke Augsburg and her team met this challenge. So as not to interfere with the look of the listed building, an illumination concept was needed that would seamlessly blend in with the architecture. Since the upper floor of the staircase ends in a vault it was not possible to integrate the illumination system into the ceiling. 2 3 WILA

4 Project The solution came in the form of WILA s high-performance Puck system for handrails. Consuming as little as 1.5 W per light point, the centre of the steps was illuminated with 100 lx - efficiently and in compliance with the relevant standards. Thanks to the warm white luminous colour used (3000 K) the architectural effect of the historic stairwell could be presented in detail. Recessed in a second, unobtrusive aluminium handrail, placed in front of the historical one, the light source is not perceived. And due to the reduced dimension, the system can be sunk flush into round and square handrails measuring from 38 mm inside diameter and 1.5 mm wall thickness. This was also important in order not to exceed the dimensions specified by the architect for the handrail. In terms of lighting design the system also offers added value: illumination can be optimised even further by the offset between and the beam angle of the light sources. Thanks to flexible, individual arrays, the LED lighting system can be used both in straight and curved arrays, which was particularly necessary given the small radii at the Halle court building. Retrofitting is also possible. Depending on the version Puck is also suitable for outdoor applications and is vandal-proof. The strength of all visible parts here complies with impact resistance rating IK10 (EN 62262). Specifically developed for flush recessing into the bottom of handrail sections, the LED lighting system can be used for both straight alignments and all types of radii thanks to its flexible one-off array. Sensitive handling of the structure and unobtrusive luminaire positioning were part of our fundamental design approach. The solution achieves the required illuminance levels for the stairs without a problem. It is a solution that pleasantly fuses with the overall concept sums up Anke Augsburg. The current requirements made on illumination and the brief to emphasise the architectural features even further were both met by WILA s Puck for integration in handrails. Thanks to individually arranged LED units, the variable system can be used both with straight lines and all radii. Retrofitting is also possible. Depending on the design, the LED is protected against destruction by a lens of hardened polycarbonate. Protection classes, constructions and beam angles remain unchanged. Installation in Stone Next to the installation in round or square profiles e.g. handrails, the Puck can also be mounted in natural stone or concrete elements. WILA constructed a special mounting case for a secure installation. The heat is removed directly through the mounting case, so that the reliable continuous operation is assured WILA

10 Knowledge Definitions Luminaire Luminous Flux Llm The luminaire luminous flux (Llm) defines the usable light of the luminaire and is the decisive value in lighting design. As opposed to the lamp luminous flux (lm), the luminaire luminous flux (Llm) accounts for losses due to the design of the luminaire and thermal losses associated with LED systems. WILA defines only the Llm value for all LED lamps at operating temperature. This value can be found both in data sheets and in the relevant EULUMDAT file. System Efficiency Llm/W System efficiency defines the ratio of luminaire luminous flux (Llm) to power input (W). Efficiency losses due to gear boxes have already been taken into account by WILA in the Llm/W value. Cut-off Angle The cut-off angle of luminaires is defined as the angle between the horizontal plane and the point from which the light source is not directly visible yet. The increased visual comfort offered by shielded light sources is clearly perceivable. The Downlights of the alphabet zono family of products, for example, have a very good cut-off angle of 30. Half-peak Divergence Angle α For accent lighting, the half-peak divergence angle α is given rather than the beam spread angle. The half-peak divergence angle is defined as the angle of the rotationally symmetrical luminous intensity distribution at which the luminous intensity equals half of its maximum value. The half-peak divergence angle is given as a full angle. UGR The UGR method takes into account the layout of the luminaires in the room and evaluates the glare produced by the entire lighting system for a specific observers position. WILA provides UGR values where the observers position is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the luminaire and the lamp/luminaire axis is parallel to the longer side of the room. The UGR method is implemented on the basis of simple tables. A low UGR value indicates that glare is negligible or non-existent. Suitability examples maximum UGR values: 16 for drafting rooms, 19 for offices and control rooms, 22 for precision industrial tasks 25 for light industrial tasks and 28 for heavy industrial tasks. Luminous Intensity Distribution In order to give a clearer overview, the luminous intensity distribution curves have been divided into groups. Shown are the planes from 0 to 180 (red line) and from 90 to 270 (blue line). The 0 plane is on the right. Beam Chart For accent luminaires beam charts are shown. The angle of the spread out beam corresponds to the half-peak divergence angle of the luminous intensity. Diameter and average illuminance Em [lx] can be read from the chart for each corresponding height. Index -DV = loop-in/loop-out function -DD = dimmable, DALI -DD-DV = DALI dimmable with loop-in/loop-out function Electrical Installation The advantage of the system is that you only have to run the wires from one Puck to the next. This reduces connection times by faster essembly, especially with strongly curved handrails. For further details consult the wiring diagram included with the delivery. The power supply must be placed outside of the handrail.
