3 1 Unit 1: Cameras (5 Days) Why Is This Unit Important? Photography is a medium that we use throughout our lives. Having knowledge about the operation of a camera will continue to be an important factor in our decisions on which one to buy and which one to use. Enduring Understandings: Students will become familiar with camera terminology. Students will do an advanced internet search to purchase a camera at two different price points; students will be able to justify their selection. Essential Questions: In a world of constant technological changes, what do we need to know to make intelligent decisions? Acquired Knowledge: Student will understand the following: o LCD o Megapixel o optical zoom o digital zoom o ISO o SLR o storage media o photo file format. Acquired Skills: Camera: Diagram a camera Download images Internet: Simple and advanced searches Download images Copy and paste information for a web page into another document

5 3 Unit 2: Composition (17 Days) Why Is This Unit Important? With the popularity of the digital cameras people take a large number of pictures, but not all of them are worth saving or printing. Composition guidelines can help us make an educated decision about what photographs to keep or print. Enduring Understandings: Students will discuss the basic principles and elements of art and design. Students will take a series of photos emphasizing line. Students will take a series of photos emphasizing shape. Students will take a series of photos emphasizing texture. Students will evaluate all photos taken using Composition Guidelines. Essential Questions: With the use of digital cameras, we are capable of taking a multitude of photographs. How do we judge which one to keep, print, and delete? What criteria can we use to help us with our decision? Acquired Knowledge: Student will work with the Elements of Design: Line, Color, Texture, Shape, Form and Value. Student will work with the Principles of Design: Balance, Harmony, Contrast, Directional Movement and Rhythm. Students will work with Photographic Composition Guidelines: Rule of Thirds, Leading Lines, Simplicity, Viewpoint, Framing, Cropping, and Symmetry and Patterns. Students will work in Photoshop. Acquired Skills: Camera: Format camera for use Download images to computer Save images to use at any time Composition: Work within the Principles and Elements of Design Use composition guidelines

8 6 Unit 3: Close Ups (6 Days) Why Is This Unit Important? Digital cameras have settings other than auto focus. In order to best utilize all the features on our digital cameras, we will experiment with specific settings. Enduring Understandings: Students will become familiar with the menu setting on their cameras. Student will take a series of close-up photos, moving closer with each photo to push the camera to its limits. Essential Questions: How can we best utilize the equipment we have? Where can information be found to utilize the equipment we have? Acquired Knowledge: Students will know how to make changes to the menu settings. Students will know some of the basic concepts of Photoshop Acquired Skills: Using a Camera: Auto Focus setting Menu changes Similarities and differences in all digital cameras Benchmark or Major Assessments: Formative Assessments: Presentation of photos Comparison of photos Practical menu change test Summative Assessments: Take the same series of close up photos with 2 different cameras: o Menu changes of both cameras. o Write up differences in the distance each camera supports at a close up setting.

10 8 Unit 4: Photoshop (12 Days) Why Is This Unit Important? Photoshop is a software program that all other programs are judged by, and it is used industry wide. We will work within the program to understand its applications and uses. Enduring Understandings: Students will be able to make changes to photos using Photoshop Students will be able to convert digital images to hard copy Essential Questions: How can we use, save and print our digital images? How can we make changes to improve our digital images? Acquired Knowledge: Students will review digital images to determine what is possible in Photoshop. Student will recognize possible careers for skilled Photoshop editors. Students will work in tools and palette options in Photoshop. Acquired Skills: Work in Photoshop to change color modes. 13 11 Unit 5: Advanced Photoshop Techniques (14 Days) Why Is This Unit Important? Photoshop is a software program that all other programs are judged by, and it is used industry wide. We will examine advanced Photoshop techniques and careers that can be obtained with these skills. Enduring Understandings: Students will: Demonstrate how to create a picture in a picture Demonstrate how to create an extended vanishing point Demonstrate how to create an extended horizon line Improve an image with the clone stamp. Demonstrate how to create an entire new image using a blue screen Place an image in an altered photograph 3 times Essential Questions: How can we use, save and print our digital images to obtain the required results? How can we make changes to our digital images to create the effect we want? Acquired Knowledge: Students will review digital images to decide how to totally change the composition of that image using Photoshop. Student will recognize possible careers for skilled Photoshop editors. Students will work with different graphic formats, to combine them into one new format. Acquired Skills: Work in Photoshop to extend the horizon and vanishing point of the image. Make color image corrections to insure the combined images have the same value and hue. Print digital images using proper printer and paper to achieve desired effect. Work with a blue or green screen background Work with the channel mixer and chroma key. Benchmark or Major Assessments: Formative Assessments: Photoshop exercises- first with files on the computer

Can we put into practice what we have learned? Enduring Understandings: Students will: Create a visual story and visual diary Create an photo of the day Develop a complete presentation, audio and visual that is theme related Critique a presentation Essential Questions: How can we use digital images to convey a message? How can we use our knowledge of Photography and Photoshop to tell a story? Acquired Knowledge: Students will use a photo to invoke a thought response to a word. Students will write a story that can be conveyed in picture. Students will describe an emotion with a photograph. Acquired Skills: Take a series of photographs and use composition guidelines to select appropriate images to convey your message. Photoshop darkroom correction techniques. Print images on correct printer (laser jet OR ink jet) Benchmark or Major Assessments: Formative Assessments: Photograph an emotion word Photograph a picture word Self Critique of their own photos Time management skill to insure the completion of project.

Enduring Understandings: Students will create a digital portfolio highlighting all units covered in coursework in an appropriate presentation format. Students will create graphic presentation of all major project created in Digital Photography. Essential Questions: What photographs are worth keeping? Can you apply the knowledge you have acquired to make a visual statement? Acquired Knowledge: Students will use composition guidelines to select desired photographs. Map out a time line to complete all necessary benchmarks of this project. Assemble work in such a manner to be easily viewed.
