Rediscover the joys of photography. A PEN is not just another camera the PEN concept creates a whole world of new opportunities: Never before has it been so easy to make great pictures and rediscover the joys of photography and shooting movies. This is what you feel when you pick up a PEN. You can see it on the faces of people who have discovered the PEN, too. This is why this magazine is introducing you to six enthusiastic PEN users from across Europe and their photography. How did we find them? Easy enough: We ran on online search for pictures shot with a PEN. We picked out the most exciting shots and contacted the photographers and discovered people with personal histories that were just as exciting. We hope you enjoy reading our magazine as much as your PEN! THE PEN PRINCIPLE: MANY THINGS SPEAK FOR THE PEN. BUT FOR US, THESE FIVE ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT: Simplicity Features like Live Control, automatic programmes such as iauto and LIVE GUIDE (exclusive to the E-PL1) help you make really great pictures. System capability The PEN is always right up to date and the system can be expanded to create your own PEN universe for instance with new lenses, an Electronic Viewfinder, dedi cated flash units, microphones, bags and cases, straps, etc. The ideal camera is no camera. Akira Watanabe and his team have worked for years to develop the digital PEN. It was always their goal to create something revolutionary as it was with the original PEN 50 years ago. What drove him? Q. Mr Watanabe, there are thousands of cameras available. Is there still a chance to develop something new? A. When we were developing the legendary film PEN long ago, my predecessor Mr Maitani said that the ideal camera was no camera, which meant shooting with hands free. We are still far away from the goal he indicated. Quality With a high-quality image sensor, outstanding image quality, built-in IS, interchangeable lenses and an enormous range of features the PEN has no need to stand in the shadow of SLR cameras and it can shoot videos, too. Q. In one sentence what is the idea behind the PEN? A. A small camera that brings SLR quality to everybody. Akira Watanabe, Olympus, Japan. Q. The Japanese are known as trendsetters and the PEN is a big success in Japan already. Do you think it will be as big in Europe? A. Yes, I believe so. Japan is an island country with a single language, where trends spread very quickly. On the other hand, according to my experience of living in Germany, I have a feeling that Europe takes a bit longer, but finally selects a real good product. Q. How can PEN change the world of photography? A. Imagine you have two cameras to take high-quality pictures, one conventional SLR and a PEN. And you are going to a party, a restaurant, or other event where you are neatly dressed and going to meet many people. Which one would you take with you? A PEN will drastically ease your burden of carrying a camera physically, mentally and may even underline your style. Creativity The PEN s Art Filters open up almost limitless opportunities for creative enhancement of your pictures and movies even while you are shooting. Design The PEN not only looks fantastic it fits perfectly in your hand too: Every button is exactly where it belongs. 04

ELINESPANJAART Photography perceives the beauty in everyday life. Photography has always been much more than a hobby for Eline Spanjaart, it s more of a passion and her greatest ambition is to be a successful photographer. Of course, this doesn t mean her job as an art director is not fulfilling. But if she does happen to discover an interesting subject on the way to work, there s nothing more important than a good shot. She is particularly fascinated by the inconspicuous things that most people pass by without a second glance. Sometimes, you only recognise the hidden beauty when you capture it with a camera. That s why Eline likes cameras that are small enough to carry all the time, but still let you make wonderful pictures. But most of all, she loves superb lenses. So she bought an adapter especially for her old SLR lenses and My photos are often shot where nobody would ever expect to find a wonderful subject. Like on the way to work. can now use them on her new camera. Her favourite subjects are derelict buildings. What fascinates her so much is the history they conceal. Every now and again it s the watchdogs behind the fences and inside the buildings, too. It gets pretty adventurous at times. But some of these photos have even won prizes, so that s the first step on the way to fulfilling her dream. ijsregen ELINE art director lives in Tilburg would like to be able to make a living from photography

TARJEIKROGH Without a camera I feel constantly starved. When you ask Tarjei Krogh how he came to be a professional photographer, the answer sounds quite obvious: Photography is a mixture of my mother s art, my father s computers, mathematics and my addiction of just looking at things through cameras. In spite of this, up until ten years ago he ran a second-hand record shop and played in a band. Photography was something he taught himself later on by consistently posting his shots in photo-communities for criticism and trying out for himself what he learned from other photographers suggestions and what he found in books on photography and in galleries. For the Norwegian photographer, the composition of his pictures is a mathematical formula with a multitude of geometric forms and sparse colours. Only the perfect combination of these elements creates the magic he seeks day by day. Because he practically never leaves his home without a camera. That s why he likes cameras that are so small When shooting, I like to reduce the content of my photos to only a few elements and colours. This achieves attractive contrasts. and compact he can easily take them to a rock concert. After all, he is still a slave to the music and many of his former colleagues are now customers. tarjei krogh TARJEI photographer lives in Oslo uses photography to combine mathematics and art

The new E-PL1: step by step to perfect pictures. SIMPLY SUPERB PHOTOS AND MOVIES. High-quality image sensor Are D-SLR cameras too big and complicated for you? No problem at all: the E-PL1 offers you the image quality of a D-SLR camera, but packed into a body the size of a compact camera. That s obvious as soon as you see your pictures: they re not only pin-sharp, they re much more brilliant, too. HD movie With a PEN, you re the director and cameraman in one. You can use all the creative features for still photography like Art Filters and interchangeable lenses for your next movies. For instance, a cool Swinging Sixties look is no problem at all with its Grainy Film filter. The E-PL1 also offers you the opportunity to connect an external stereo microphone. GREAT STYLING AND IDEAL HANDLING. Compact size Like both of its predecessors, the E-PL1 is just great to look at and great to be seen with. It slips easily into your jacket pocket and is the ideal camera to take along to a party or when you are out for a walk. And its elegant styling is always an eye-catching talking point. Perfect ergonomics High-quality finish, a generously sized monitor display and ergonomic design reflect the character of the E-PL1. Its design ensures that the buttons are exactly where you expect them to be. Perfect proof that beauty and ideal handling are by no means mutually exclusive. JUST CONCENTRATE ON YOUR SUBJECT. iauto and Scene Modes The E-PL1 is designed for people who love photography but don t want to make a science of it. So just open the box, take it out and shoot away to your heart s content. Its iauto function and an exten- Art Filters Shoot great photos with amazing creative features: it s always only a click away. Art Filters let you give your pictures and movies a brand new look. Just select the mode to shoot in the style of the Swinging Sixties in grainy black & white, with the peppy colours of the Pop Art filter or in a model railway -style diorama look. sive package of Scene Modes make it so easy to choose the settings you need. And its LIVE GUIDE (more on the next page) explains the basics of photography step by step. SHOOT GREAT PICTURES AND IMPRESS YOUR FRIENDS. Integrated flash The E-PL1 is ready to shoot in any situation. Its integrated flash pops out of the body with a press of a button and makes sure your pictures are still great, even if the lighting conditions are less than perfect. ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A NEW CAMERA? THEN DISCOVER A WHOLE NEW WORLD. Flexible system capability You get a whole package of perspectives with every E-PL1. For example, you can build up a system with as many lenses and accessories as you like to stay right up to date with your PEN. Accessory port With an optional microphone adapter and a VF-2 Electronic Viewfinder, the E-PL1 sets the same new standards as the E-P2. The Accessory Port, a new connection concept, links both to the camera. The external stereo microphone lets you considerably improve the quality of your movie soundtracks, and thanks to the Electronic Viewfinder, you can keep an eye on your subject not only with the camera s monitor display, but also through the alternative of a small, high-resolution image viewfinder. Additional accessories Additional flash units and filters, underwater housing, elegant cases and stylish leather carrying straps: the E-PL1 is your key to the entire world of PEN, and it s certain that it will be the centre of attention at even the most highbrow parties. A multitude of lenses Change your perspectives! You can mount any number of different lenses on your PEN. Why not try a wide-angle lens to capture a really wide view; or get right up close with a super-zoom lens. Discover these options, and many more, in the same compact design as your PEN. 10

Why make things complicated when everything can be so easy. STEP BY STEP TO PERFECT PICTURES. It s so easy. Go to iauto and select LIVE GUIDE. Now you can use the sliders to change whatever you want in your picture and view the changes in real time on the camera monitor. As soon as you re satisfied, just press the shutter release and your picture is in the can. THE E-PL1 AND ITS INTEGRATED LIVE GUIDE. What s the easiest way to a perfect picture? How can I make my pictures more exciting? And how can I use all the features of my PEN? The answers to all these questions can now be found in the LIVE GUIDE of the E-PL1. Without having to learn exactly what f-stops, ISO settings and optimum shutter speeds mean, you can quite simply change the intensity of colour, motion blur, and brightness of your picture with simple clicks, and capture exactly the great results you wanted in the easiest possible way. Intensity of colour (Colour Saturation) Do you like it clear and packed with vitality, or maybe a little less contrast? The saturation slider lets you give your shots more punch or a rather more romantic touch. PICTURE TIPS. One part of the LIVE GUIDE offers helpful shooting tips. These tips offer concrete suggestions or recommendations for shooting certain subjects, for instance pets, children or flowers. LIVE GUIDE also offers concrete examples and reveals how to make your pictures more exciting by changing your composition and framing. Lighting mood (White Balance) Could your photo be a little warmer? Or maybe you prefer a cooler look? LIVE GUIDE shows the effects of changing the colour temperature of your shots. Brightness Bright or dark? A couple of short clicks are enough to find the brightness your photo needs. Out of focus backgrounds (Depth of Field) Sometimes, your main subject can stand out a lot better when the background is slightly out of focus. This is another effect you can set with the sliders. Motion blur (Shutter Speed) What do you prefer? Motion blur or pin-sharp shots. LIVE GUIDE shows you how to use the motion of objects to the best effect to create fantastic shots. 12

HORSTBINDER For me, photography brings peace of mind and absolute relaxation. Dashing around the pavements of Paris day after day searching for the next great picture offers more relaxation for Horst Binder than a week in a health spa. When I m out with my camera, something in my mind goes click and switches me into a completely different mode. Then there s only me, my camera and my surroundings. Of course, that doesn t mean he has his camera outfit with him all the time and wherever he is. The man from the south of Germany consciously takes his time when doing what he describes as more or less street shooting. Pictures are good when they stick in the minds of viewers. And they re even better when they tell a story or inspire one. Horst Binder likes to show these stories best of all in the form of spectacular, multimedia AV shows that he produces together with several of his friends. It takes quite some time to shoot pictures in the quality needed for I was sitting in a roadside bistro in Paris and shot at random when someone walked by. That s how I came to shoot the Trottoirs theme. All the photos on these two pages are from that collection. AV shows like this. And because he doesn t particularly like to carry around too much gear, he prefers to use conveniently small, easy-touse cameras with intuitive controls: At the end of the day, a camera is only a tool for a purpose. And because I work very quickly, I have to be able to not only love my tools, but rely on them completely, too. HORST director of a culture and tourism department lives in Abenberg seeks relaxation in photography 14

16 I was particularly fascinated by this woman s shoes. I followed her for quite a while until I was finally satisfied at getting the shot with the reflection in a puddle.

PETERLUECK Sending postcards with Flickr. If you want to know what Peter Lück does, just take a look on the Web. This is where you ll soon find the latest pictures about his life. It s a great alternative to writing postcards and spending too much time on the phone. Friends and people I know now just take a look on Flickr when they want to know where my travels are taking me. People who know him well look out for him on the Baltic coast. He spends most of his time on the beach anyway, not far from his home in Rostock. Peter Lück has a very sober relationship to photography. Since his student days, a camera has always been simply a convenient tool for capturing perfectly noncommittal moments. Creative statements are something my shots don t always need. Often enough, I only want something to remind me of a day with the family or the place where we spent our holidays. That s why he doesn t tweak his private shots on a PC and is no friend of filters. But he s certainly a friend of quality, Water, waves and the sky. What more do you need to be happy? A camper van would be nice, though. because without it you never really know how a shot will turn out. It s good to get pictures that work without any effects or manipulation. And for that you need a camera that delivers shots like that straight off the cam. And it s even better when it fits into your jacket pocket. PETER designer lives in Rostock collects situations with his camera

Another milestone in the PEN family. THE E-P2. The logical next generation of the E-P1 combines established technologies and design with brand new highlights. It offers even more Art Filters and its accessory port enables the 100% CONCENTRATION ON YOUR SUBJECT. iauto and Scene Modes The E-P2 makes photography easy. Its iauto function and an extensive package of Scene Modes makes your choice of settings easy and, with the Live Control operating concept, you have immediate access connection of an external microphone or a high-resolution Electronic Viewfinder. to all camera settings. And this lets you concentrate on essentials your subject. THE DIVERSITY OF AN ENTIRE SYSTEM. A multitude of lenses You re getting better and better your PEN, too! Because you can expand not only your camera system step by step with a constantly growing range of different lenses, but also the options it offers you. And if you ever decide to buy a different PEN model, you can carry on using the lenses you already own. Viewfinder The Electronic Viewfinder for the E-P2 connected to the accessory port offers a phenomenal resolution of 1.44 million pixels. And you can tilt it up by 90 whenever you need to shoot from an unusual standpoint. Accessories The camera s accessory port lets you connect a microphone adapter to make the soundtrack of your movies even better. A range of flash units for all situations, cool leather cases and stylish carrying straps round off the extensive accessory programme for the E-P2. IMPRESSIVE CREATIVITY. Art Filters With an E-P2, you ll soon discover any number of new creative features. Eight different Art Filters open up a whole palette of creative options for image and movie with modes ranging from a cool Swinging Sixties look in grainy black & white and the peppy colours of the Pop Art filter to a fascinating model railway -style diorama look all without any post-processing on your computer. Interchangeable lenses Just like every other PEN, the E-P2 is designed to take interchangeable lenses. And you can choose from an entire range of lenses in Micro Four Thirds standard. For instance, with special adapters, you can mount not only Four Thirds Standard fish-eye, telephoto and wideangle lenses on your PEN, but also a wide range of lenses made by many other manufacturers the PEN sets no limits on your creativity. DESIGN MEETS EASY HANDLING. Compact size Its compact dimensions, for example in combination with the pancake lens, lets the PEN slip easily into almost any jacket pocket, so there s never a reason to leave it at home, wherever you happen to be going. Despite its compact size, its handling is easy and its large-sized monitor lets you view your shots in perfection so, as you see, you ll never miss anything an SLR offers. Perfect design The quality of a PEN is obvious at first sight: it s not just its high-quality metal body, but the way all its control elements and setting dials are exactly where you would intuitively expect them to be. At the same time, a PEN is simply beautiful and therefore not just a perfect camera to look at, but also the perfect camera to be seen with. TOP-CLASS PHOTOS AND BREATHTAKING MOVIES. D-SLR image sensor The PEN has the same excellent image sensor as digital single lens reflex cameras. That s obvious as soon as you see your pictures: they are much sharper and this gives them their fascinating extra depth. The dust protection and image stabiliser are also identical to those installed in the PEN s grown-up sisters, the Olympus D-SLR cameras. In contrast, its TruePic V Processor has been specially designed for use in the PEN. HD movie Switch from stills to movies: you can use all the creative features for still photography like Art Filters, manual focusing and interchangeable lenses for your next HD movie, too. The larger image sensor brings another great advantage. You can pick and choose your background blur (depth of field) for creative effects when shooting movies. The E-P2 of course offers you the opportunity to connect an external stereo microphone, just like on the E-PL1. 20

CHRISMETTRAUX The camera is my notepad. Stringent symmetry, purist architecture, grainy black & white: when you see his pictures, you don t necessarily get the idea that the Swiss Web designer Chris Mettraux used to be a member of a graffiti gang, who only works just enough to make a living and loves to sleep until noon. He can look back on twelve years work as a postman which he hated. Until, one day, his back problems got so bad that he decided to call it a day and only do the things he really wanted to. He studied Web design and now has plenty of time to invest most of it in his pictures: I think a lot before taking pictures. Sometimes an hour or so before I press the shutter release. Lausanne, my home town, is one of my favourite subjects. I just love to capture the stringent lines in architecture in grainy black & white. Chris Mettraux, has a whole collection of cameras single lens reflexes, home-made pinhole cameras, compacts and quite a few others he picked up at flea markets. That s why he likes small cameras you can take along wherever you are. For me, my camera is more or less like a notepad. I can switch quickly from black & white to colour. And it s different from using an SLR nobody goes oooh now when I take their picture. CHRIS Web designer lives in Lausanne is a passionate photographer

BRITTSCHEPERS I don t know anything about lenses or things like that. Just shoot away without really knowing what will come out. An attitude like this needs plenty of curiosity and optimism. Britt Schepers seems to very much enjoy the fact that her life is not yet on the straight and narrow. The Dutch student tends to think about almost anything except her future profession and the first thing she s planning after her exams is a trip to Asia to get her mind clear again. She sees photography in a similarly open-minded way. Not so long ago, she said goodbye to her compact camera and bought something more sophisticated: I love being creative. But my hands just can t express things the way I want. It s so much easier with a camera. In the meantime, however, she is confident enough to post her photos on the Web rather than just showing them to her family and friends. She expects a camera to be right for travelling and that it will make great pictures without having to read through a complicated manual. I don t like reading user manuals. As a law student I have to learn enough anyway, so photography simply gives me the freedom to experiment. She prefers to find out what a camera can do by herself. I ve definitely made rapid progress, and I m getting pin-sharp subjects with properly unsharp backgrounds. That was a really big surprise. BRITT law student lives in Nijmegen is a beginner when it comes to photography britt schepers 24
