1 Happy with waterlily&lotus pictures. By Sqn.Ldr.Primlarp Wasuwat Chukiatman For IWGS Journal March 05,2013 One of my everyday works is taking pictures of waterlily&lotus in my house-pang U Bon collections. For the base informations and observations all the plant we had in THAILAND weather condition. I found a happy moment with pictures of everything in Pang U bon and merged it in to my everyday duty. I am not a professional photographer but I try my best from what I got in my hand, experience, learning and knowledge to create a good looking picture of the waterlily&lotus to make me happy. This article I wrote for explain what I am doing, thinking and taking a snapshot. I am really grateful to Ms. Tish Reeder Folsom and the editor in chief of IWGS Journal for giving me an opportunity to write this article at this time. 20 years ago, I took one course of photographing technique when I was study in the university which was the first experience with the photograph. I have another 6 teachers for the waterlily&lotus photograph inspiration. The 1 st teacher is my father(dr.slearmlarp Wasuwat).I learned about the angle of shooting photo for characteristics of waterlily&lotus from his slide picture kept in his data-bank since Mr.Garet Uemura is the 2 nd teacher who enlighten me about waterlily picture in his book Nymphaea and Nelumbo Photogarphs The 3 rd teacher is Mr.Garry Wittstock who explained about the pond photography on his speech in IWGS Symposium The 4and5 th teachers are Mr.Noriyuki Kato and Mr.Sakchai Guy(S.Guy). Both of them are professional photographer. The 6 th teacher is Mr.Pairat Songpanich whom I asking a lot about the technique on camera.i thank all them for sharing their experience and knowledge to me. 2 Mr.Garry Wittstock Mr.Pairat SongPanich I concluded the knowledge that I got from those professional in 3 basic factors for taking a snapshot of waterlily&lotus as follows:- 1. The camera basic techniques for capture waterlily&lotus. in my opinion the hardest thing is to get the right color seen by eyes. Especially the groups of color blue, purple and dark red shade. When I shoot with my single lens digital camera. The basic setting for the good qualities are 1.1. Setting for ISO between to get a good quality of photo Setting for the F-stop and the Speed shutters depend on the Depth Of Field Range. For the choice between consistently over or under exposing images I would preferred under exposed shots because the color of flowers look alike the real color in my eyes. Over Exposing Under Exposing- Close to real color Over Exposing Under Exposing- Close to real color 2. Knowing the significant characters of waterlily&lotus.- this factor mean you should know the out standing character and the habit of the subject at the time to take snapshot. The suitable time for take a picture should be in the morning. Sometimes natural elements such as birds, bees and rain drop can make the photo look better.

The style or story for the perception of waterlily&lotus in your shot. this what I learned from the 4and5 th teachers. All of their picture show the beautiful perspective of the flowers. The typical picture The same flower but in different composition Look different in the incomplete flower. Inspiration by Mr.Noriyuki style Mr.Noriyuki inspired me on capturing the flowers with no need to show overall flower but it was much more interested look. Mr.S.Guy told me that every flower has its own signature. It is your duty to show when you snapshot it and the black background will let the color stronger. The other issue is to capture in a different point of view. It will make your photo look interesting.

These are 3 types of picture when I took. The data or information of waterlily&lotus pictures. The objective is recorded the specific detail of the plant that I observed. I may need 6 picture on the same time for this objective. 2.The top view of the full opened flower. 3.The angle view of the full opened flower. 1. The beautiful picture. 4.The side view of the full opened flower. 5.The overall picture of the mature plant. 6.The front and back of the leaf. 7. The un-open flower

5 The esthetic of waterlily & lotus on pictures. This will depend on what I like to show. But in my picture I will not forget to show the signature of the plant varieties or cultivars. Working on this type of picture I used the art design fundamental concept in my picture such as to create a good composition, the focal point in the picture and also the positive-negative space in the picture. Composition for the focal point. Get the right color by under exposing Magnify the outstanding sepals of Nangkwaug Apsara. Magnify the outstanding sepals and leaf color of Nangkwaug Muaeng Prai. Jongkolnee on normal background Jongkolnee on the black background Shooting in the night with flash Shooting in the night with flash.the positive&negative space make picture better. Look normal cultivar Just adding a scale. It can make the plant look special.

6 The conceptual or telling a story pictures. For this type of picture I already had the story in my mind. I will walk into our garden and look for something that can describe the story or significant natural phenomenon in only one snapshot. This will keep the story last forever. Dancing in the rain Asian esthetic Hiding Heart Hardy heart often found in the garden Lotus Heart Arrange flower with the unexpected thing make this picture different. Those are the camera I used. Normally I always use the compact digital camera. It is not too expensive or untouched-able. I am an ordinary water-gardener. I can find my happiness in waterlily garden with the digital photo snapshot, My IWGS friends can find it in your own way. Enjoy your day with sunlight and waterlily&lotus all around.
