But amazing at the time! Portraits took ages Sit still for 10 minutes! Credit: 31/05/2018 9

THE BIRTH OF FILM The use of manufacturing paper film started in 1885 before switching to celluloid in During this time the first camera was offered for sale in 1888, it was a very simple box camera with a fixed-focus lens and single shutter speed, the camera came pre-loaded with enough film for 100 exposures and needed to be sent back to the factory for processing and reloading when the roll was finished. In 1900, the Brownie was introduced, which was a simple and very inexpensive box camera that introduced the concept of the snapshot. Film also allowed the movie camera to develop from an expensive toy to a practical commercial tool. During the 1930 s the camera industry really began to take off especially in 1936 with the Canon 35 mm rangefinder, an improved version of the 1933 Kwanon prototype. Japanese cameras would begin to become popular in the West after Korean War veterans and soldiers stationed in Japan brought them back to the United States and elsewhere. 11 THE DIGITAL AGE At the end of the late 1980 s digital camera technology started to enter into the market. The move to digital formats was helped by the formation of the first JPEG and MPEG standards in 1988, which allowed image and video files to be compressed for storage. Digital cameras differ from their analogue predecessors primarily in that they do not use film, but capture and save photographs on digital memory cards or internal storage instead. Their low operating costs have relegated analogue cameras to niche markets. Digital cameras now include wireless communication capabilities (for example Wi-Fi or Bluetooth) to transfer, print or share photos. Since 2003, digital cameras have outsold film cameras. 19 John Wambugu. Canon Trainer SPORTS PHOTOGRAPHY What is sports photography? Sports photography refers to the genre of photography that covers all types of sports. Professional sports photography is a branch of photojournalism, while amateur sports photography such as photos of children playing association football, is a branch of vernacular photography. (Everyday life / common subjects) The main application of professional sports photography is for editorial purposes; dedicated sports photographers usually work for newspapers, major wire agencies or dedicated sports magazines. However, sports photography is also used for advertising purposes both to build a brand and as well as to promote a sport in a way that cannot be accomplished by editorial means. This category involves getting up-close to the action in a very fast-paced and action-packed setting. Canon Basic DSLR Photography workshop 31/05/

John Wambugu. Canon Trainer WILDLIFE & NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY What is wildlife photography? Wildlife photography is a genre of photography concerned with documenting various forms of wildlife in their natural habitat. This can be very challenging type of photography, as it might be difficult to capture animals in their proper habitat. It is one of the more challenging forms of photography. As well as requiring sound technical skills, such as being able to expose correctly, wildlife photographers generally need good field craft skills. For example, some animals are difficult to approach and thus a knowledge of the animal's behavior is needed in order to be able to predict its actions. Photographing some species may require stalking skills or the use of a hide/blind for concealment. This style requires proper technical skills and it needs to be planned accordingly. 23 John Wambugu. Canon Trainer LANDSCAPE & TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHY What is landscape and travel photography? Landscape photography shows spaces within the world, sometimes vast and unending, but other times microscopic. Landscape photographs typically capture the presence of nature but can also focus on man-made features or disturbances of landscapes. This is one of the most popular types of photography, as it can portray a scenery, or can even show an impact of environmental change. Travel photography is a genre of photography that may involve the documentation of an area's landscape, people, cultures, customs and history it tends to expresses the feeling of a time and place, portrays a land, its people, or a culture in its natural state, and has no geographical limitations. 28 DSLR Digital Single Lens Reflex Camera, or DSLR, is a type of digital camera that provides the capability of interchanging lenses and wider photo-shooting options than normal consumer cameras. It serves the purpose of capturing images in digital format A DSLR contains a photographic lens,a viewfinder, a shutter, and an image sensor. 31/05/

WHAT IS HAPPENING WHEN A DSLR IS NOT CAPTURING AN IMAGE The photographic lens located in front of the camera directs lights into the camera body. Light is then reflected by the mirror to the pentaprism, and Finally travels to the viewfinder where photographers can observe the scene. Notice that the mirror is flipped down and the shutter covers the images sensor from recording lights. 1. Lens 2. Reflex Mirror 3. Focusing Screen 4. Pentaprism 5. Viewfinder 6. Focal Plane 7. Sensor / Film Light 31/05/

WHAT IS HAPPENING WHEN A DSLR IS CAPTURING AN IMAGE The image capturing process starts when the shutter release button is pressed. Notice the mirror flipped up from its original position, allowing light to travel to the sensor area. The shutter that covers the image sensor is now fully opened, and the image sensor is exposed under light and will be capturing the image. 1. Lens 2. Reflex Mirror 3. Focusing Screen 4. Pentaprism 5. 46 Understanding the Exposure Triangle

UNDERSTANDING THE 3 BASIC ELEMENTS OF PHOTOGRAPHY The exposure triangle is a common way of associating the three variables that determine the exposure of a photograph: aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. Changing any of these 3 elements will effect the exposure. 31/05/

John Wambugu. Canon Trainer WHAT IS SHUTTER SPEED? Shutter Speed Shutter speed or exposure time is the length of time when the film or digital sensor inside the camera is exposed to light, also when a camera's shutter is open when taking a photograph. The amount of light that reaches the film or image sensor is proportional to the exposure time. 31/05/

SHUTTER SPEED Fast / Quick / High 1/2000s 1/8000s = very fast shutter speeds 1/250s 1/1000s = fast shutter speeds 1/8s 1/125s = slow shutter speeds Measured in stops with second as unit. Most PowerShot cameras have a range from 15s to 1/4000s Most EOS cameras have a range from 30s to 1/8000s 30s 1/4s = very slow shutter speeds Slow / Long / Low 31/05/

John Wambugu. Canon Trainer SO, WHAT SHUTTER SPEED SHOULD I USE? What are you trying to achieve? Freeze action I want to isolate motion, create impact. I want to have everything in focus. Andy Rouse. Canon Explorer Capture action I want to capture motion, create impact. 31/05/

John Wambugu. Canon Trainer SHUTTER SPEED EFFECTS (PANNING) Panning The basic idea behind panning as a technique is that you pan your camera along in time with the moving subject and end up getting a relatively sharp subject but a blurred background. This gives the shot a feeling of movement and speed. It s particularly useful in capturing any fast moving subject whether it be a racing car, running pet, cyclist etc. 31/05/

HOW DO I SELECT SHUTTER SPEED? Select Tv (Time Value) mode This number will change Rotate the main dial Left click = larger aperture Right click = smaller aperture 31/05/

Exercise: Demonstrate and use shutter speed to freeze action & capture action Produce 3 images for each action

UNDERSTANDING THE 3 BASIC ELEMENTS OF PHOTOGRAPHY 31/05/

John Wambugu. Canon Trainer WHAT IS APERTURE? Aperture Aperture is a space (a hole) through which light passes in an optical or photographic instrument. The primary application of an aperture is to: Control the light entering the camera (imaging device). 31/05/

APERTURE / IRIS Measured in stops called f-stops Aperture range determined by lens. Controls amount of light let in. Low number e.g. f/2 lets in more light. High number e.g. f/22 lets in less light. 31/05/

NUMBERS Large/Bright /Fast Small number f/2 f/5.6 f/11 Small Large number 31/05/

NUMBERS f/1.4 to f/2.0 = 1 stop f/2.0 to f/2.8 = 1 stop Etc. 31/05/

HOW DO THIS ACHIEVE DEPTH? Small / Shallow Large / Deep 31/05/

John Wambugu. Canon Trainer DEPTH f/2.8 f/16 31/05/

John Wambugu. Canon Trainer SO, WHAT APERTURE SHOULD I USE? What are you trying to achieve? Creative choice I want to isolate focus, create impact. I want to have everything in focus. Quentin Caffier. Canon Explorer Technical choice I need more light to capture a photo. 31/05/

John Wambugu. Canon Trainer APERTURE FOR CREATIVITY f/2.8 Creative Choice Create impact, be artistic: f/1.8 f/2.8 Makes the subject almost 3D popping out of the picture! Choose a lower f number like f/2.8 or lower. Shallow focus draws the eye in. The closer you get the narrower the area of focus becomes. Telephoto lenses further exaggerate the effect. 31/05/

John Wambugu. Canon Trainer LARGE APERTURES 400m f/2.8 50mm f/1.2 31/05/

John Wambugu. Canon Trainer ANY DANGERS OF WIDE (LARGE) APERTURES? f/2.2 Face in focus Cake out of focus. f/2.2 Face out of focus Cake in focus. You can have a photo of your cake and you eating it but only if you choose a narrower (smaller) aperture like f/5.6 or f/8. If you use a wide aperture you have to be aware the focus is narrower. Group shots - you don t want to shoot at f/2.8 you need f/5.6 at least to get all the faces in focus. Landscapes wide apertures mean only part of the scene is in focus and the corners are less sharp. 31/05/

John Wambugu. Canon Trainer APERTURE FOR CREATIVITY f/16 Creative Choice I want to have everything in focus: f/8 You need a smaller aperture. f/5.6 and above on APS-C f/8 on Full Frame DSLR 31/05/

John Wambugu. Canon Trainer SMALL APERTURES What are the benefits of small apertures? Maximum deep of field (think of landscape photos). Reduces lens flare. Highest amount of sharpness. Lighter lenses. Small apertures can be creative as well! You know those shots of cars driving and the head lights are streaking all over or the blur of the water around a waterfall?- Well in order to shoot that you have to keep the shutter open very long. You would need a small aperture to cope with the long shutter in order to not overexpose the picture. 31/05/

QUESTIONS How do you think aperture works with shutter speed? 31/05/

John Wambugu. Canon Trainer PHOTOGRAPHING DARK CONDITIONS Technical Choice to use a wide aperture Worry 1: Its dark! The camera needs light. Worry 2: There is movement! Worries about shutter speed and blur. Using a 50mm f/1.8 (wide aperture) lens: 1/100th of a second exposure time. Good chance of freezing motion. Using the kitted lens (f/5.6): 1/15th of a second. He s going to move while the shutter is open, I m going to move as well so blur is very likely. 31/05/

SHUTTER SPEED & APERTURE / IRIS DIAGRAM 31/05/

HOW DO I SELECT APERTURE? Select Av (Aperture Value) mode This number will change Rotate the main dial Left click = larger aperture Right click = smaller aperture 31/05/

Exercise: Use aperture to create impact Demonstrate creative choice Produce 3 images for each action

UNDERSTANDING THE 3 BASIC ELEMENTS OF PHOTOGRAPHY 31/05/

John Wambugu. Canon Trainer WHAT IS ISO? ISO ISO or ASA sensitivity expresses the speed of photographic negative materials. Since digital cameras do not use film but use image sensors instead, the ISO equivalent is usually given. What ISO denotes is how sensitive the image sensor is to the amount of light present. The higher the ISO, the more sensitive the image sensor and therefore the possibility to take pictures in low-light situations. 31/05/

CONTROLLING LIGHT The third factor Light in the scene Shutter Digital sensor Can t always control Can control how wide it is Can control how long it s open for Can control how sensitive it is 31/05/

WHAT DOES THE SENSOR DO? Light Collect light Convert light to electric signal Photodiodes light sensitive cells 31/05/

ISO VALUE ISO measure of sensitivity to light. ISO was developed as a standard in the film days to indicate how sensitive the film was to light. In the digital age you can set how much the signal read from the sensor is amplified. It s quite like using the volume control on a radio 31/05/

John Wambugu. Canon Trainer ISO RANGE ISO 100 Each step represents a doubling of sensitivity Low ISO 800 High ISO 100 Image quality is best. Needs lots of light Long shutter speed Wide aperture ISO 1600 ISO 3200 ISO 12,800 Sensor signal is amplified many times to achieve a picture. As the signal is amplified so is any noise so the picture appears grainy 31/05/

John Wambugu. Canon Trainer SO, WHICH ISO SHOULD I BE USING? When there is lots of light outside the ISO can be low and you can get best image quality. Lens aperture: f/8 ISO 100 Shutter speed: 1/200th second 31/05/

John Wambugu. Canon Trainer HOW DO I USE ISO TO MY ADVANTAGE? In low light using a high ISO is beneficial to stop camera shake. ISO 3200 is selected Shutter speed is 1/80th of a second should stop motion. 31/05/

John Wambugu. Canon Trainer MANUAL EXPOSURE Length of time shutter is open = Shutter speed The size of the opening to allow light in = Aperture The sensitivity of the image sensor = ISO Under exposed Correct exposure Over exposed Everything begins to go white Everything starts to go dark 31/05/

EXPOSURE TRIANGLE OVERVIEW 31/05/

METERING What is a meter? An instrument to measure things What is a light meter? A light meter is a device used to measure the amount of light. In photography, a light meter is often used to determine the proper exposure for a photograph. 31/05/

John Wambugu. Canon Trainer DIFFERENT TYPES OF METERING Evaluative 31/05/

John Wambugu. Canon Trainer DIFFERENT TYPES OF METERING Spot 31/05/

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE? Evaluative Spot 31/05/

ON YOUR CAMERA Center weighted Spot Partial Evaluative 31/05/

SPOT & PARTIAL METERING 31/05/

EVALUATIVE & CENTRE WEIGHTED METERING 31/05/

Quick Exercise: Get into groups of 2. Capture 2 images of your partner in front of a window. Put the camera on - P Mode. One with spot metering and the other with evaluative.

SO, WHAT IS METERING FOR? Remember the EXPOSURE TRIANGLE? 31/05/

WHAT IS METERING FOR? Full (correct) exposure Aperture Shutter Speed ISO 31/05/

WHERE IS THE METERING ON YOUR CAMERA? 31/05/

ON YOUR CAMERA So.if: f/ /500s + ISO 400 = -1 on the exposure scale What would you do to the ISO? What would you do to the Aperture? What would you do to Shutter Speed? 31/05/

Exercise: Get into groups of 2. Capture 2 images of your partner in front of a window. Camera on - M Mode Aperture f/5.6. Capture a sequence of images, change the shutter speed of each image to reflect the motion, and use ISO to balance.

ART & DESIGN Color, value, line, shape, form, texture and space Elements of ART The arrangement of elements of art in the photograph Elements of DESIGN Canon Basic DSLR Photography Workshop 31/05/

ELEMENTS OF ART COLOR Differentiates and defines lines, shapes, forms, and space. Even black and white images have a huge number of different shades of grey. VALUE Is the degree of light and dark. It is the contrast between black and white and all the tones in between. LINE Is the most basic element & can be used to create complex shapes or to lead your eye from one area in the composition to another. FORMS Are threedimensional shapes with length, width, and depth. Balls, cylinders, boxes and pyramids are forms. SHAPES Are created when lines are combined to form a square, triangle, or circle. Shapes can be irregular or geometric. Patty hard SPACE Is the area between and around objects. Increasing or decreasing the amount of space around an object affects the way we view that object. TEXTURE Is the surface quality that can be seen and felt. Textures can be rough or smooth, soft or hard. Canon Basic DSLR Photography Workshop 31/05/

John Wambugu. Canon Trainer LEADING LINES Create depth & perspective. Place subject where lines converge. Create a clean composition. Focus on the Subject. More Dynamic. 31/05/

John Wambugu. Canon Trainer FRAMING Gives the photo context. Gives images a sense of depth and layers. Leads the eye towards the main focal point. Intrigues your viewer. 31/05/

John Wambugu. Canon Trainer CONTRAST Look for differences between light & dark. High Contrast- bright highlights. Low Contrast- narrow range of tones. High key, low key. 31/05/

John Wambugu. Canon Trainer CONTRAST 31/05/

John Wambugu. Canon Trainer POINT OF VIEW Point of view in photography simply means the position from which the camera sees the scene. Are you looking down on the subject? Are you looking up at the subject? How close are you to the subject? Is there anything between you and the subject? Every decision you make about point of view will change how your viewer sees the photo. 31/05/

John Wambugu. Canon Trainer RHYTHM & PATTERN The repetitive shapes and lines in your subject can create a pattern, and a rhythm is created as the eye moves through the image. Rhythm often becomes more powerful in black and white photos because there is no colour. 31/05/

John Wambugu. Canon Trainer SILHOUETTE Choose a Strong Subject. Turn off your Flash. Get Your Light Right. Frame your image. 31/05/

John Wambugu. Canon Trainer NEGATIVE SPACE Negative space is the area between and around objects in a photo. Use it to see shapes and sizes more effectively, and produce better composed images. 31/05/

John Wambugu. Canon Trainer WHEN YOUR SHOOTING Fill the frame for more impact Watch out for distracting elements Make the most of the space you have 31/05/

SOME FURTHER COMPOSITION POINTERS In the western world we tend to view images from left to right like reading, in other parts of the world this will be the reverse- know your audience! Look for compositions that provide balance. Make sure horizons are level. Focus on the eyes of your subject. Make sure the image has a proper subject. Compose an image to lead the viewer to the subject. Avoid looking down on animals. Explore different angles and viewpoints. 31/05/

ARTISTS HAVE USED COMPOSITIONAL TECHNIQUES Can you spot them? Credits: urner+paintings&ajaxhist=0 0SCb27T6QHaFR&q=turner+paintings&simid= &selectedindex=33&qpvt=turner+paintings&mode=overlay&first=1 31/05/
