5 6 Step Plan for starting a Successful Photography Business Have you considered hiring a Photography Business Coach? Running a successful photography business requires more than just great photography skills. After you ve completed your initial business set-up (including all legalities and accounting), here s some key steps to follow when first starting out in your photography business. 1 CREATE YOUR BRAND A brand is so much more than just a logo. You need to extend your thinking to write out your business vision statements, mission, objectives, purpose and values & beliefs before you go any further. These will become the foundations and cornerstone of your business decisions going forward. 2 CHOOSE YOUR BUSINESS MODEL You need to make sure you have a clear understanding of how your business model works. 18 10 MARKETING IDEAS FOR PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHERS Facebook competitions. Be clear on WHAT the competition is, WHO it is aimed at, and WHY they should enter. Run a charity project. One of the biggest lead generators for our successful studios is to create a photographic experience where your photo shoot fee goes directly to a chosen charity. It makes the client feel great about booking with you and they often buy images from the shoot. Network groups. In the past, the only way to network was to attend physical meet ups. Now you can also join many Facebook groups that are set up for specific audiences. Many of these groups allow you to advertise your business once or twice a week. Always contribute to the group with value on all the other days if you can. People remember you when you contribute to conversations, add value and praise others. Sponsor a gym. Offer to photograph the body transformations of members. You can also give the gym vouchers for photographic shoots that they can distribute to their members. Introduce a new photographic experience. This is to excite your existing clients to have another photoshoot with you. For example, if you photograph newborns, introduce a first birthday photo experience that includes a giant cupcake with their shoot. Partner with businesses to give gift certificates. Businesses are always looking for gifts they can give to their staff. Photographic experiences are perfect as they can be enjoyed with their families. The person receiving the gift often values their employer more when they are seen to be appreciative of their work. Create a joint marketing campaign with another small business. If you photograph women for boudoir shoots, meet with a local boutique lingerie store, find out what they would love to sell more of and create a gift certificate tear off with an offer that every purchase over a certain value (determined by the lingerie store and you) receives a boudoir photographic experience to the same value - the more they spend, the more they receive towards their photo shoot. Alternately, if they spend over a certain amount, they receive a gift certificate of a set value. If your target market is children and babies. Then align with daycare centres to photograph the graduation day of their final year in day care. By offering to capture milestones, rather than just their annual photos, you can increase the value you offer to the centre, as well as giving you a chance to promote your service to the parents. Always under promise and over deliver. Just as I have given you this one extra tip! Surprise your clients with their order earlier than expected. This gives them one more reason to remember you and they are more likely to refer you to their friends. Do a little marketing each day, don t overwhelm yourself with finding a full day before you can get to marketing. Then set your next 30 days goal find from this list what is achievable in the next 30 days to implement and just do that. Then set your next 30 days goal. Being overwhelmed leads to procrastination and not implementing your plan. This ultimately leads to stress and a failing business. A little marketing every day keeps the clients calling. Finally, remember to find clients who VALUE what you do and REWARD you for it so that you can continue to LOVE photography! 33 ALBUM DESIGN SERVICE Usually produced within seven business days from receipt of files. COLOUR MANAGEMENT Spend less time behind a computer screen and more time photographing clients. Photographers are often overwhelmed with the technicalities of colour management. Let me explain colour management without the technical jargon. Colour management is simply making sure that what you see on your screen closely matches what your finished print will look like. There are two steps to making this happen. Step 1. Screen calibration Installing.icc profiles on a Mac - If Photoshop is open, close it before beginning. - Ensure your profile is unzipped/uncompressed. - Storing profiles in Library/ColorSync/Profiles allows all users to use them. An alternative location for users without Admin privileges is Users/<username>/Library/ ColorSync/Profiles. Profiles stored here are available only to the current user. The design process We believe most photographers want to spend more time behind their camera lens, and less time in front of a computer. Let us help by designing unique and customised albums for you. Images can be provided via Dropbox or any other file transfer service. We recommend placing your images in just two folders: Favourites and Maybes. The images in the Favourites folder will all be used and will be featured throughout the album. The images in the Maybes folder will be used as fillers throughout the design and will support the featured images. They may not all be used. Once we create a draft of your layout, we will you a private link to your album via AlbumExposure. You can sign up for a free account with AlbumExposure and add your logo so your clients see your branding as they view their album. You can then share the album layout with your clients. They can add comments/changes on each layout. These will automatically be sent to our designers. You will be notified of the revised draft when it is available. You can then either make further alterations or approve your album for production. How many images do I send? A typical 15 spread/layout album will have approximately images (average of 4-5 images per spread/layout). How long does a design take? The design process will take up to seven working days after receipt of images. If you require a faster turnaround, please mention this when you place your order. What if I want to change the draft design? AlbumExposure will enable you or your client to make change requests based on each layout and then submit those changes to be actioned. Included in the price is two free rounds of design revisions. Your screen allows you to adjust the brightness, contrast and amount of red, green and blue that are shown in images. The goal is to adjust your screen to an international standard that has been created for all printing labs and photographers. Everyone who has calibrated their screen to this standard will see an image in the same way. To do this, you will need to purchase a device such as a Spyder or X-Rite i1. They are supplied with software to help you through the process. The wizard will ask you to connect the Spyder or X-Rite i1 device. It will then measure the colour of your screen and make the necessary adjustments for you. Once the process is finished, images on your screen will look almost identical to ours. Step 2. Using printer profiles Now that our screens match, you need to be able to see how your images will print when they are sent to our printers. Even state of the art printers cannot print every colour that you can see on your screen. This is because the printer has to mix a limited set of ink colours to try to replicate every colour visible on your screen. Printer profiles allow you to see which colours cannot be printed, and more importantly, what will happen to these colours when they are printed. For example, if the specific printer cannot print Coca Cola Red accurately then it will print the closest colour possible. Printer profiles adjust the image on your screen so you can see what will happen to the image when it is printed. Installing.icc profiles in Windows - If Photoshop is open, close it before beginning. - Ensure your profile is unzipped/uncompressed. - In Windows Explorer or My Computer, right-click the file and select Install. Windows automatically installs the profile in its correct path of \Windows\system32\ spool\driver\color You can download our printer profiles from the resources section on the website. These profiles are specific to Brilliant Prints. Other labs should be able to provide you with their profiles. The profile is just a file that you download and install on your computer. You can then use Photoshop to soft proof your image and see if there are any colours that can t be accurately reproduced. 1. Open your image in Photoshop 2. Click the View menu. Select Proof Setup. Select Custom 3. Select the profile you downloaded from the website 4. Untick all other boxes and set Intent to Perceptual 5. Click Ok This will show how the image will look once it has been printed. Hold down the control button and press the Y key to turn the proof on or off. If the image does not change when you soft proof using our profile, then it means that our printer can achieve all the colours in your image

We offer two freight methods: standard freight and express freight. Standard Freight will be sent via a road service. This may be Australia Post or a variety of couriers, depending on your location.
