6 6 When choosing your chairs and desks/tables the following details should be taken into account, as all furniture is made to order. After many years of research, BS EN 1729 part 1 (2006) and BS EN 1729 part 2 (2006) have now been published. These European and British Standards deal with the requirements for chairs and tables destined for educational use. The above chart is a guide only and is designed to aid in the selection of classroom furniture. Part 1 deals with dimensional requirements, e.g. heights, angles, back support contact points etc. for every age. It is aimed at encouraging good posture and comfort which in turn could lead to better attentiveness in class and long term improvement in health. Part 2 covers structural testing. Seat Height: Ensure the seat height selected is suitable for the user and allows adequate knee space when used in conjunction with a table. Incorrect seat height is the most common error made when selecting chairs. Overall Width: Ensure the overall width of the chairs allows an appropriate number of users to be seated at a table. Maintenance: A regular maintenance programme should be followed to prevent damage to floor surfaces.
