4 Educational And Municipal Equipment Ltd, based in Oldham expanded their UK operations and secured part of their market share in Scotland by opening emescotland in Sanquhar. This was the first Scottish Development Agency factory on the Sanquhar Industrial Estate and part of the regeneration of the area following the decline in coal mining. The company began by manufacturing plywood laminated products, predominantly chairs By the late 1960 s the company had expanded it s range to include the Modulink board and storage system. emescotland was purchased by the Howland Furniture Group in More wood working machinery was introduced allowing a further increase in the range of furniture manufactured to include table tops and storage furniture. Polypropylene chairs were also added allowing eme to supply a complete range of quality educational furniture. In the early 1970 s the factory was extended to include a metal fabrication shop for manufacture of table and chair frames as well as other component parts, giving the company more control over production of the range s eme began supplying furniture to medical centres and in 2008 introduced anti-bacterial vinyl upholstery to the range to meet infection control requirement. eme was purchased by the Directors of British Thornton Direct Ltd. New products and colour options were introduced. The upholstery range was expanded to manufacture soft seating for the Trudy range saw further expansion of the factory with an additional 12,000 sq ft of manufacturing space. A larger CNC saw was installed and edge banding facility added.

5 Prince Charles visits eme eme purchased the Sanquhar site and building. Throughout the 1990 s there was major investment in the company with the addition of a CNC machine, spray polish shop, dust extraction system and an extension to the building for material storage. The elements office furniture range was introduced manufactured from steamed beech veneer. An upholstery shop was alsoestabliched allowing the complete manufacture of metal and wooden frame upholstered chairs on site s eme s range of upholstered products was expanded with the addition of adult soft seating and breakout furniture A new CNC controlled tube bending machine was installed for manufacture of crush bent table frames. The eme storage furniture range was refreshed and 20,000sq ft of additional warehousing space was taken on. With further plans to expand the manufacturing site and a design team working on product development, eme continue to deliver design led innovative furniture solutions
