DIY Couture S/S 2013

I have no fear of depths Calling all dreamers, drawers, designers, explorers, fabric lovers, and fantasists! We want to collaborate with you. DIY Couture invite you to design the fabrics for our SS2013 collection. Have you ever been sitting on the bus or at your desk when your mind begins to wander in your imagination you are somewhere on the other side of the world, scaling a craggy pink-red granite mountain, following the call of a chimpanzee high up in humid jungle treetops, diving to the bottom of the ocean where coral is the colour of candy floss and your heart drums as weird creatures appear from beneath forgotten ship wrecks? Copyright 2013 The People s Print All rights reserved Bring your imaginary worlds out of the realm of the fantastic and be part of the new SS2013 DIY Couture collection! In collaboration with BeFab Be Creative the UK s first fully accessible digital fabric printing bureau, making it possible for individuals to design and print their own fabric. The People s Print who provide beautifully illustrated step by step tutorials to help you design your dream prints. DIY Couture who produces simple, illustrated sewing instructions, ready to wear.

Competition What we will be looking for: 1. Colour the colours you use will influence the whole of the DIYcouture collection; prompt/provoke our palette! 2. Imagination cause a commotion! 3. Description tell us a bit about your fabric 4. Design a good looking repeat. Winning designs: The winners will each receive a copy of the popular 2nd edition Digital Textile Design book by Melanie Bowles, a copy of DIY Couture; create your own fashion collection by Rosie Martin as well as print vouchers to spend at Be Fab Be Creative a new digital fabric printing bureau in Britain. The clothing in DIYcouture s seasonal collections serves as inspiration to those using our instructions to create truly unique garments from scratch. The winners will also have the satisfaction of seeing their fabric designs turned into garments which will take pride of place on the DIYcouture homepage throughout the summer. Lets start!

The People s Print have created an inspirational how-to tutorial, showing you how to build a dreamscape in collage form and turn it into a fabric design. Feel free to use the knowledge and ideas within the tutorial, or stray as far from it as you like. Make mini collages that will transfer you to another world. We show you how to put your collage into repeat ready to share, ready to wear! 00. All you need Plastic animals......

01. Is your Imagination! I have no fear of depths Key words: Exploration, adventure, freedom, fantasy, fearless Settings: Turbulent ocean floors, deep jungles, soaring deserts, mountain crevices, unchartered territories, unknown worlds. Get going and collect papers, images from old books, objects, plastic toys, coloured papers and a picture of yourself or a friend. Start creating some collages and arrangements. Keep within an A4 sheet of paper. You don t need to stick your paper cut outs down just photograph them as you go along. Take some extra pics of seperate elements as well.

02.Cut out Once you are happy with your layout, photograph it on your phone and or Facebook it it to yourself. Most modern phone camera s take a good enough quality photograph to use in quick design work. Square Marque Open your image in Photoshop. We crop the image square with the Square Marque. Image - Crop Check the image size, we make our image size 10cm x 10cm (1181 x 1181 pixels), our resolution is 300dpi Now select the Marquee tool from the tool bar. Roughly draw around the image, we want a cut out look! Carry on untill you meet the start point and your selection will appear.

03.Drop Shadow Now we want to copy the selection. Edit - Copy Edit - Paste A new layer will appear with your image on. Select the Background layer and fill with white. Put the Foreground colour to white. Edit - Fill - Foreground Colour. (We can add a background colour later on). Whoops! I nearly forgot to say at this point you can add a drop shadow to add to the collage effect. Select your Image layer, at the bottom of the Layers palette find the Layer Style icon, select it and a drop down menu will appear, scroll down to the bottom and select Drop Shadow and a box will appear. Move the sliders for the desired effect.

04. Offset Perfect! Select All your image layer and Copy Edit - Copy With the image layer still selected we are going to start to make the repeat unit using the Offset filter which will create a seamless pattern. Filter - Other - Offset Divide the Vertical pixel measurement by 2, in this case it will be 1181 divided by 2 = Put 590 in the Vertical slider box. OK Great! Now with the Background Layer selected we are going to extend the Canvas.

05.Repeat Image - Canvas Size Select the Left Hand Middle Square Change the Width size the 200 percent Click OK Your Canvas will be bigger. Remember we copied the image a few steps back now, Edit - Paste and your image will appear, position it in the right hand middle of your canvas. Apply the Drop Shadow to the new layer. Turn your Background layer off and Merge visible the layers with Look at the space between the collage motif. You can fill this space with a new image, we will show you how in the next step.

06.Giraffe! Choose a new image, we like the giraffe! Take a picture of your Giraffe and open it in Photoshop. As we did before, draw around the giraffe with the Lasso Tool cut around him/her as we did with the collage. Edit - Copy the selection Edit - Paste Paste the giraffe and scale him/ her to fit our doucument and position it within the negative space. Edit Transform - Scale

07. Building design Once your happy turn the background Layer off and Merge Visible the collage and the Giraffe layer. With the new merged layer selected go to the Offset Filter to see what other negative space there is too fill. Offset - Filter - Other Move the sliders to find the space that needs filling. Paste another giraffe in this space and again scale to fit the space. We flip the Giraffe. Edit-Transform-Flip Horizontally. Select your Background layer and try filling with some colours. When you are happy Flattern your design. Layer - Flatten The size of this repeat unit is 20cm x 10cm but you can make it larger or smaller. Image - Image Size It is always good to do a paper print out of the design and see it off the computer to see the true scale.

08. Define pattern This is now your repeat unit ready to upload onto the Spoonflower website. But always check the flow of the repeat at any stage of the process. Edit - Define Pattern - name your design. Open a new document in this case 40cm x 40cm to test your pattern. Edit - Fill - Pattern Find your pattern and fill your new document. Well done! Time for a well deserved break, you can sit back with pride!

09. Good luck!

10.Submit! Please upload your designs to the dedicated Facebook page before midnight GMT on Thursday March 21st. Winners will be selected taking into account - but not solely based on - number of likes and comments left under designs. Thursday March 21st. Winners will be selected taking into account - but not solely based on - number of likes and comments left under designs. The winning designs will be selected on Friday March 22nd. Good Luck!
