NEW ITEMS IN LIGHTROOM 6 INTRO Notes in red are notes to me for the presentation and to help you recall what I was doing if you refer to these notes later. Good evening folks. It is a pleasure to see everyone. First of all, Thank You to Rosie and Dick for making this presentation possible with their technical advice and keeping me updated as things changed! I am going to show you the 3 main new features in Lightroom 6 and some of the minor new features as well. I built the presentation on my laptop which is slow. To get around that I did some of the processing on my desktop and then converted the RAW files to small JPEGS and moved them to my laptop. I did that because that I know for sure what version of Lightroom that I will have access to. And I am much more comfortable with my own computer. I would like to have a show of hands regarding what version of Lightroom you are using. Your choices are: Not using Lightroom, Using some version of Lightroom 5 or earlier Using Lightroom 6 or 6.1, Using Lightroom 6.2 or Lightroom 6 brought us 3 main new features: HDR, Panorama, Face Detection. Lightroom 6.2 and brought us a new Import feature and the Dehaze feature. It also was widely criticized for taking away some functionality that power user wanted and eliminated the auto ejection of the camera memory card after import. You are required to eject the memory card yourself. Adobe made a public apology for not sufficiently getting input from users and has promised us a new version of Lightroom answering the critics. Presumably this will be Lightroom 6.3. No time table has been set. I am telling you all this because I am using Lightroom which has a new import procedure that might be replaced by an import procedure similar to the 6.1. I do want you to see this feature that is new in Lightroom 6.1. I will highlight this when I show it to you. My presentation tonight is based on free video downloads from LauraShoe.com/ and videos from Tim Grey and KelbyOne. The video by Laura Shoe is by far the best Tonight I am going to SHOW you how to use some of the main new features in Lightroom 6. To really learn this you will need to go home and either/or follow my notes or follow the video that I reference at the end and go through it step by step. The video is very helpful because you can repeat hard to learn portions several times. This is especially true with the Face Tagging area. The HDR and PANOROMA s are pretty easy. NEW ITEMS IN LIGHTROOM 6 10/15/2015 PAGE 1
Also, PLEASE DO NOT ASK QUESTIONS AS WE GO. I do not have enough experience with these new items yet to be able to answer all your questions. But, at the end, I will TRY to answer your questions. If I don t know the answer, I will refer you to the Laura Shoe videos. HDR (FALL COLORS OCT 19 or HDR AND PANORAMA 2 - collection) Select 2 or more RAW files. (Laura says that 2 will usually work better than many.) One image is to capture the shadows, the 2 nd is to capture the highlights. Select the images that you want to combine into and HDR. Right click > Photo Merge > HDR. Click Auto Tone off and on to show the differences in Auto Tone. Click on Deghost Overlay to see the mask. Look at area of the photo where the overlay is. Click on NONE then on Medium to see the improvement. If the elements in the photos were moving, such as leaves blowing in the breeze, choose the Deghost feature. DON T click on Merge for the demo. PANORAMAS (HDR AND PANORAMA 2) Lightroom can put them in the correct order according to Laura Shoe. I have not tried this. Right click > Photo Merge > Panorama. Unclick Auto Select and Auto Crop. Show the difference in each of the 3 projections. Chose Auto Crop and Auto Select. DON T click on merge for the Demo. Show recently merged pano and then the enhanced one. Note that as the panorama is made, exposure blending between the different photos will be made if necessary. Chromatic aberration will also be corrected. Lens profiles will also be applied if they are available. Show Family Reunion panorama. Background story. Show vertical panorama. SUGGESTIONS FOR TAKING PANORAMA SHOTS Overlap 25 or 30%. Turn camera to make vertical photos, not horizontal Use manual focus not auto focus so what you are focusing on doesn t shift between shots. Keep depth of field and exposure constant. (Use manual mode so that aperture and shutter speed are constant.) If shooting jpeg don t use auto white balance mode. It might change from shot to shot. Use a tripod if possible. NEW ITEMS IN LIGHTROOM 6 10/15/2015 PAGE 2
Quick summary: FASW = Focus set to manual, Aperture and Speed set to manual, White balance fixed (not auto). Show reunion pano. Show vertical panoramas. FACES DETECTING AND TAGING (How to tag photos with people keywords, how to organize people keywords, how to find photos with those people in them USING PEOPLE KEYWORDS. QUICK OVERVIEW Show pic of Bill Jones and Betty Brewer in the Folder for Face Detection. We have always been able to add keywords to PHOTOS with people in them. What is new is the ability to add tags (name keywords) to FACES of people in photos. This way we not only know that Bill Smith is in a photo but exactly which person he is in a photo of multiple people. Before you can do Face Tagging, Lightroom has to make an index of faces. Lightroom goes through all of your photos and identifies all of the face regions. (A face region is identified by a square around the face.) CAUTION: When you first go into People View, Lightroom will ASK if you want the ENTIRE CATALOG indexed or if you want to only find faces as needed. I can t show that screen here because I ve already indexed the catalogue. If you have a large catalogue of thousands of photos don t index the entire catalogue at first. Laura Shoe says it could literally take days. It does run in the background but it slows your system down. If you turn it on accidently, like I did, you can pause it by clicking on the Identity plate (upper left) and clicking on the pause button. For now, click on only find faces as needed when you see the screen that asks that question. Show pic of question screen. WELCOME TO PEOPLE VIEW. LET S GET STARTED. First I m going to IMPORT new photos that have NOT been indexed so you can see how indexing works. Also, importing now works differently (in version 6.2.1) than it has in the past. I have on my thumb drive some new photos AND one old photo that I imported earlier. You will see why in a minute. This thumb drive will act the same as a memory card from you camera. It is more instructive to think of it as a memory card. Click on the folder IMPORT PICS. Note that one photo is already there. Then click on IMPORT. Then click on the desigination for the thumb drive. In this case it is drive E. This brings NEW ITEMS IN LIGHTROOM 6 10/15/2015 PAGE 3
up the destination folder screen. Enter the destination folder (6.2.1 IMPORT PICS if not already there. Now here is another new feature. You can chose to see ALL photos on the memory card or only the NEW photos by clicking on the Show All Photos or the New Photos by clicking on the triangle at the bottom of the screen. You can make some more choices on the panel at the right. I wont go into all those other items other than to note that you can now also import into an existing collection. Good idea. Click on the Add to Collection box on the right if you wish to do so. Also note that when you import if you convert to DNG, that process is now done in the background so you can continue with other tasks and there is a checkbox for that. I m not going to spend much time here because I don t know what will be revised in the 6.3 version. Click IMPORT The importing is over. Now we are going to talk about Face Detection. Go to folder IMPORT PICS. Show the WELCOME TO PEOPLE VIEW SCREEN. Chose Only Find Faces as needed. We are now going into People View and let Lightroom create the index the faces. This will go fast as we don t have many pics and they are small jpegs. Now I am going to switch folders because I have some things set up to show you. OK. Here is a FOLDER (Folder for Face Detection) of people that have not all been named. (You can also work with a collection if you wish.) Click on the People View icon, or click on O to go to the people view. Lightroom has built an index of faces unnamed people The goal is to name all these people so they are moved into the named people category. Click in the name field, type in name, and the photo goes into the named people category. Also, other faces that look similar have been stacked. OK we are going to take a break in this procedure because there are some concepts you need to understand before we continue. BEFORE WE CONTINUE LET S TALK ABOUT STACKS. STACKS If Lightroom is confident several photos are the same person it will put them into a stack. Click on the stack. Click S to see the individual photos then click on S again to COLLAPSE the stack. If these are all the same person you can just enter the name once and each photo in the stack will get the name. When the stack is NOT collapsed and one person does not belong in that stack you can click on that face and enter the correct name. Then that person is no longer in that stack. NOW LET S TALK ABOUT TAGGING AND NAMING PEOPLE. When tagging, I enter the last name first then the first name. The reason is that people keywords are stored alphabetically. Click on the Keyword List, in the right panel, to see this. This keeps families together. If you do use last name then first name, use a space between last NEW ITEMS IN LIGHTROOM 6 10/15/2015 PAGE 4
and first name not a comma. Or, you can enter the names as first name and last name. This is personal preference. You can do a selection on the faces of the same person and just type in the name once. The name will be assigned to all the faces in the collection. Sometimes you need to see the entire photo to know who the person is. To do that CLICK ON THE FACE and the entire photo will appear in the navigator panel. You can also double click on the UNNAMED face and it will open up in Loupe view. Also, in loupe view you can turn on or off the face region by clicking on the rectangle icon at the bottom right of the screen. You can also move a person from the unnamed to the named region and drop it on another photo of the same person. That way the unnamed photo will get the name of the already named person. Now if you have a person whose name you don t know you could just leave it blank. Or you could type in the name unidentified person and use that name keyword to work on those photos later. Also, when you are entering a name you get auto complete options. For example S could give you Schafer, Smith, Sampson if these were already people keywords. Sometimes you get a photo that is clearly not a face. You can double click on it to open it in face view. If it is not a face you can go back to people view (icon) and click on the X inside the face region. Lightroom will remove that face region from the photo. Continue to name people. (Now double click on a NAMED PERSON. That will take you to the individual person view (called CONFIRMED). If there are still unnamed persons Lightroom will suggest similar faces to make it easier to identify the person in the photo.) The next important step is to go to each of your photos in the shoot to make sure that every person has been named. You should be in people view now, click on the rectangle in the lower left hand for Loupe View. Then click on each photo to make sure there is a face region and a name for each person. If you are in Loupe view and don t see the Face Region identified, click on the Face Region Icon on the lower right of the screen. With the Face Region Icon active, (plus sign) click and drag to draw around faces that were not previously marked with a Face Region (Lightroom does not handle profiles well). And then name it. Click on small X in Face Region to delete it. (Remember to turn off face region by clicking on the icon so that you get back the zoom tool you are accustomed to.) NOTE. If you consider these people keywords to be private and you are going to export the photos, you can choose to remove them from your exported copies. Click on Export, scroll down to Metadata and click on Remove Person Info. ORGANIZING AND FINDING PEOPLE Go to the Keyword List. Click triangle if necessary to see the list. NEW ITEMS IN LIGHTROOM 6 10/15/2015 PAGE 5
Keywords now have 3 groups, All, People, Other. People Keywords come from Face Tagging, Other keywords are what we used prior to Lightroom 6, All Keywords are, well, all keywords (both people and other). Creating a hierarchy. On the left in the Keyword list, click on +. Enter the name Clients. Then click on Person (to make it a Person keyword) > Create. You know have a Person Keyword named Clients. This will appear in the All category and in the People category. You could also create a hierarchy for Clients, Relatives, etc. Go to the People tab. Click and drag individual keywords to the People keyword to nest them. Click on the People Keyword, right click and chose Put New Persons Keywords Inside This Keyword. This way you don t have to drag the individual Person Keywords to the People hierarchy. If looking at All keywords, you can collapse the People keywords to make the list more manageable. Dog friends??? TWO WAYS TO FIND PHOTOS WITH PEOPLE IN THEM (MARY SMITH AND LINDA KOZ) FIRST: USING THE FILTERBAR TO FIND PEOPLE Go to the Keyword List. Hover over the name of the person you want to see e.g. Mary Smith. This will cause an arrow to appear on the right. Click on this arrow. This shows you to all the photos IN THE CATALOG with this name. It also opens up the library Filter bar with the Mary Smith People Keyword selected and all the photos with this People Keyword. (If Filter Bar is not open, click \.) If you want to see all the photos with EITHER Mary Smith OR Linda Koz, also select the keyword Linda Koz in the same column. This is an OR condition. If you want to see all the photos with BOTH Mary Smith AND Linda Koz, CLICK OFF LINDA KOZ in the first column. Then you create a 2 nd column of keywords. Click on the word at the top left of the 2 nd column heading. Click on keyword to make the column only for keywords. (These are keywords in the photo(s) selected in the first column.) Select Mary Smith in the first column (deselect Linda in the first column) and select Linda Koz in the 2 nd column. This will give you all photos with BOTH Linda Koz AND Mary Smith IN THE SAME PHOTO. ( If you just want to search just a particular folder or collection, select that folder or collection, go to gridview (G), then open the library filter bar by clicking on the word Metadata. This will give you the columns to work with.) To go back to seeing all photos in the folder or collection, click on ALL in each column, then click on NONE in the Library Filter bar. SECOND : USING PEOPLE VIEW TO FIND PEOPLE (Covered previously) Select the folder or collection that you want to search. Or search All Photographs. Go to people view. NEW ITEMS IN LIGHTROOM 6 10/15/2015 PAGE 6
Scroll through the people until you find the one you are looking for. Click on that person. The entire picture will be in the Navigator screen. Double click on the NAVIGATOR panel to see the photo in Loupe view. Now you can work on it or export it. If you used the all photographs area, you can right click and go to the folder or collection in the library. Note that in People View you might have to click on the film strip photo before you can right click and go to the folder or collection. LIBRARY MODULE (Some smaller changes) EXPORTING PHOTOS: From Library module select photo and Export. Image Sizes - Can now resize based on % of the number of pixels. EXPORTING PHOTOS: Metadata Can remove person info if added names to faces during export. You can Filter a Collection to find it faster. Twirl down the Collection Filter if necessary to see Filter Name Collection. Key in the name of the collection you are looking for. DEVELOP MODULE (SMALL CHANGES) An automatic straighten option has been added to the crop tool. Use pic Click on crop tool. Click on the Auto button for automatic leveling. The Graduated filter and the Radial filter now can have a portion of the adjustments erased. Show the effects on the sky including erasing on the foreground using the Radial Filter with pic SchaferF-Gallery. Click on Brush, click on Erase, and brush away to erase the effect. Click on A to add the effect. Adjust the Custom slider to change the amount of the effect. The Adjustment Brush can make an adjustment in a straight line. (Use pic Schafer-F Gallery- Umbrella) Click on Brush. Chose effect (burn). Set feathering to zero. Click on left side of pic. Move brush to right hand side. Shift-click to draw a straight line. Can also move pin to fine tune the position. To move, click on the overlay pin and drag. (Erase brush is just under burn rectangle.)
