2 INTRODUCTION The Land Trust for Tennessee Oral History Project was a cooperative project conducted by Middle Tennessee State University, through the Public History Department, in The purpose of the project was to interview landowners that had placed a conservation easement on their land through the Land Trust for Tennessee for the purpose of protecting the land from future development. The interviews were conducted by students of the school. The properties included in this project are located in Carroll, Hickman, and Williamson counties. The Land Trust for Tennessee was formed in January of 1999 with the stated mission of preserving Tennessee s natural landscapes and historic character for future generations. The Land Trust works with willing landowners to find ways to preserve forever the scenic and natural values of their land. The main tool used by the Land Trust is a conservation easement, which allows the landowner to retain ownership of the land, allows preservation of the land through customized restrictions on future development, and allows the landowner to obtain certain tax advantages. Once the restrictions are put in place, it is the intent of the Land Trust to enforce the restrictions in perpetuity. The Land Trust for Tennessee organization relies on tax deductible do nations to fund its activities.
3 SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The Land Trust for Tennessee Oral History Project Records consist of items relating to the interviews conducted with landowners that have placed conservation easements on their land and includes audiocassettes, videocassettes, computer discs, transcripts of interviews, maps showing location of properties, and photographs. Additionally, there are some printed materials including brochures and newsletters from the Land Trust for Tennessee organization. The audio materials consist of standard audiocassettes, including the master tape and an equalized copy. The video materials consist of two different formats, Hi-8mm and DVCam format. The computer discs contain the transcripts from the interviews and are Microsoft Word documents. A printed copy of each transcript is available in the folder for each person interviewed. When processing this collection, it was decided that the various types of materials needed to be housed in separate boxes due to the different media used, so the collection has been arranged into a box of the paper materials, a box containing the audio/video materials, a box containing the photographs, and a box containing the computer discs. All materials in this collection will be housed together in the TSLA storage vault. Please allow the audio/video materials to acclimate for 24 hours after removal from the storage vault before using.
