The state-of-the-art school, which opened its doors in January this year, forms part of Tameside s Building Schools for the Future programme and houses over 1,000 students. Runcorn-based decorators Ambrose Ellis worked alongside main contractors Carillion to undertake five months of extensive and highly skilled decorating to ensure the building was completed within timescale. In fact, the work was completed to such a high standard that Ambrose Ellis beat off stiff competition to win the coveted Johnstone s Painter of the Year competition earlier this year. Sixteen decorators from Ambrose Ellis worked on the project and faced a number of challenges that tested their skills. For example, the school has a number of open atrium areas, which could only be accessed with scissor lifts, meaning that only the members of the team with the necessary training and expertise could work in these areas, which they then duly did and completed the work to an impeccable standard. In addition to this, the school s walls feature a large array of famous quotes designed to inspire the students, which were painstakingly painted by skilled decorators using graphics, projections and stencils. Specification of a durable and hardwearing paint to combat the high traffic nature of any school was a crucial consideration in the planning of the building and there was little hesitation in selecting Johnstone s Acrylic Durable Matt to do the job. The ambitious new academy, which is located in the burgeoning Salford Quays area of the city, provides first-class facilities for all subjects on the National Curriculum as well state-of-the-art radio and TV production studios. The Academy contains a wide variety of contrasting substrates, including new plastered and exposed concrete, softwood, metalwork, MDF and concrete floors, ensuring products from far and wide across the Johnstone s product portfolio were utilised to give the facilities an impressive finish. For a project of this scale, it was imperative that the right products were specified at the outset to ensure the decorative work could be undertaken swiftly and the school could open its doors on time for the new term. In order to meet the stringent requirements demanded by main contractor Interserve Construction, it was vital that the paint specification not only helped to contribute to the overall environmental performance of the newly refurbished buildings but also ensured a quick turnaround and a highly durable, low maintenance finish. With some 16 other trades working on site simultaneously and with the college remaining in use throughout, contractors had to carry out work with consideration for both other workers on site and staff and pupils at the school. The specification of products from Johnstone s Ecological Solutions range provided numerous benefits to the project and were specifically chosen for their suitability for use in the education sector thanks to many being low odour and having low VOC contents. Trinity Academy, which caters for pupils aged 11 to 18, was designed by Ryder Architecture and overseen by main contractor Carillion, who combined to create a truly flexible learning environment. With thousands of pupils attending the school, the need for a paint that would withstand the rigours of heavy traffic was paramount so Johnstone s Endura Super Durable Matt was duly specified for its outstanding durability and aesthetic properties. The product s special formula means that it is 50 times tougher than standard vinyl matt emulsion and has been scrub tested to achieve official ISO and BS standards, ensuring that it will provide a lasting finish for the Academy. The new 74 million Huddersfield Centre building at Kirklees College has been designed to provide an inspirational learning environment for thousands of students. Doncaster-based Magill Painting and Decorating Contractors were tasked with undertaking the intensive 12-month decoration programme by main contractor Allenbuild and turned to the high performance attributes of Johnstone s Ecological Solutions products. The team decorated the vast majority of the building s interior with Johnstone s Acrylic Durable Matt and Covaplus Vinyl Matt; two core products from the range.
