2 Magdalen College School is delighted to showcase the end of year Summer Exhibition for GCSE and A-level pupils , in this celebratory catalogue. It has been another busy and exciting year. The work produced encompasses everything from delicate draughtsmanship to bombastic abstract oil paintings; stunning film-making and experimental animation; intricate prints and ambitious sculpture. Pupils have sketched at Kew Gardens, at the National Gallery, in front of Oxford s modernist and historic architecture, and directly from the model. We also held the inaugural Drawing Competition exhibition, which featured beautiful graphite works by pupils from across the school, not only those formally studying the subject. This year, the catalogue also features work produced by younger pupils in their lessons or clubs, highlighting future talent to look out for! As ever, the work on the walls is merely the tip of the iceberg all these pieces are the outcomes of extended portfolios of research, experimentation and observation. Most of the exhibited works were produced under exam conditions and demanding time constraints. If you have a chance, do explore the accompanying sketchbooks. We hope you enjoy it. 60 MCS Drawing Competition We were delighted to welcome to the private view Matt Gaskin, Head of Architecture at Oxford Brookes, to act as guest judge for this year s inaugural Open Drawing Competition. There was no set theme or subject for the show as long as entries were a celebration of graphite on paper. Every year group from the School made the exhibited shortlist, and it was heartening to see so many entries from pupils no longer formally studying the subject, but nonetheless keeping their hand and eye in the discipline. Congratulations to all those who had their work shown, but in particular to those who received Winner or Runner-Up awards. A selection of the entries follows.
