3 Foreword This is only our second show from Frances Macdonald so that after the huge success of her first show in 2009 this represents a triumphant return. But more we can recognize in her an enduring talent and can look forward to a long and fruitful relationship. Her deep familiarity with the landscape, sea and coasts of the West coupled with the bravura technique she has developed with a palette knife, allowing her to work in front of the subject with all the energy and urgency our climate demands, have reached full fruition in this body of work. As ever she started on Iona, a spiritual place of arrival and departure and continued by yacht to remote anchorages and by coastal paths with glorious views of the Mull of Kintyre. The view from her studio allows Frances to sample in every season and weather: the turbid waters of the Corryvreckan across to Jura, the comings and goings of the prawn boats and tall ships are seen from the high perspective of her vantage point above Crinan. The high points of summer invite us to picnic, while in the next picture a cruel Atlantic wave blasts us with spray and ozone; a full gale on its way. All is persuaded into the most satisfying of compositions, the artist s sophistication allowing the poetry of her subject to become permanent. Guy Peploe Managing Director, The Scottish Gallery
