2 JEREMY BARLOW ROI 6th 21st October 2007 When I was three years old I would at every opportunity paint my grandmother s garden gate with an old two inch brush and pot of water. I remember the satisfaction and enjoyment I felt from the brush being drawn over the surface of that old wooden gate and the images that would appear as the water darkened the unvarnished wood. Over the last sixty years, I suppose nothing much has changed. I still get those same feelings as my brush is being drawn over the textured surface of the board or canvas and the images that seem to appear are still a great fascination to me. I still paint every day with great enthusiasm but now and again I take time out of the studio to mow the lawn, do a little gardening or clean the car and sometimes, when the fancy takes me, paint an old wooden gate at the bottom of the garden. Jeremy Barlow ROI From sun-dappled balconies to busy boulevard café scenes, weathered shop fronts to quiet Norfolk villages, Jeremy Barlow explores a wide range of architectural and townscape subjects in his work. His abiding interest in buildings, whether the magnificent façade of St Mark s or the more modest proportions of an unknown backstreet, is matched by his love of travel. Each year he spends much of his time in Europe, seeking inspiration in the fine cities such as Paris, Delft, Venice, Siena and Granada, as well as in many small villages and towns discovered off the beaten track. He has lived in Norfolk for 20 years and, whilst much of his work is inspired by his travels, he also delights in painting the wonderfully atmospheric landscapes, coastal scenes and villages of this part of the world. Gossiping villagers, a game of boules, a fruit market local life set in its architectural context holds a special appeal for Jeremy Barlow and whereas in the past his subjects tended to be whole squares and general street views, his focus is now increasingly more specific. A characteristic in all his work is the impressive interaction of light and dark passages. The strong contrast of rich, deep shadows with pools of bright sunlight, so familiar in southern European countries, is used to great effect, not only compositionally but also to create a sense of mystery. Jeremy Barlow studied at Northampton School of Art before working in art studios in London and the Midlands. As a full-time artist he went to live in Dusseldorf, Germany, concentrating on the landscapes and townscapes of Holland, Belgium, Germany, France and Italy. He returned to the UK in 1983 and now lives with his wife and children in a small village in Norfolk. The work of Jeremy Barlow is represented in public, private and corporate collections worldwide. He has exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, the Royal Society of Marine Artists, the Royal Society of British Artists and numerous major galleries in London and the provinces.
