11 How to find articles in the UML library Go here: Select Art or Computer Science. The useful ACM library database is in Computer Science. Check out JSTOR, ARTSTOR, especially for images LEXIS Nexis for newspapers. For instance, an artist might have show listed on their website from 1981 in Boston. Chances are the Boston Globe from that year will have a write up.

12 Image source reliability Your image sources must be noted: Exactly where on the internet did you find that image? Not all locations are of the same quality/ reliability. Artist s own website = best Museum website = best; Artstor = best; newspaper/ journal = good Blog = medium, depends on the source: It might be cropped, mislabeled, poor quality Directly from Google search engine = poor because it may not be an accurate image, simply tagged as being of the same name as the artist. Since you do not know the artist s work very well, avoid it.

15 Robert Rauschenburg Biography American artist. Milton Ernst Rauschenberg was born on October 22, 1925, in Port Arthur, Texas. He studied at the Kansas City Art Institute (1946 7), the Académie Julien, Paris (1947), and with Josef Albers and John Cage at Black Mountain College, North Carolina ( ). He was based in New York City from 1950, where he and Jasper Johns paved the way for pop art of the 1960s. He worked with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, New York, as costume and stage designer ( ). Gallery dealer was Leo Castelli.

19 E.A.T. Experiments in Art and Technology Experiments in Art and Technology was founded in 1966 by engineers Billy Klüver, Julie Martin, and artists Robert Rauschenberg and Robert Whitman. The non-profit organization developed from the experience of 9 Evenings held in October 1966 at the 69th Regiment Armory in New York City (U.S.), brought together 40 engineers and 10 contemporary artists who worked together on performances that incorporated new technology. E.A.T. saw itself as a catalyst for stimulating the involvement of industry and technology with the arts. The organization worked to forge collaborations between artists and engineers through industrial cooperation and sponsorship. Membership was opened to all artists and engineers, and an office set up in a loft at 9 East 16th Street in New York.

21 Influence #2: Homage to New York, Jean Tinguely «Homage to New York» Jean Tinguely was asked in 1960 to produce a work to be performed in the Sculpture Garden of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In collaboration with other artists/engineers, among them Billy Klüver and Robert Rauschenberg, he produced a self-destroying mechanism that performed for 27 minutes during a public performance for invited guests. In the end, the public browsed the remnants of the machine for souvenirs to take home.

22 The Tower In the 1950s Robert Rauschenberg coined the term combine because, he said, he wanted to break out of that dead end of something not being a sculpture or a painting. Rauschenberg s combines often incorporated castoff objects like tires, flatware or furniture along with painting. Not only are they among his best-loved work, they were also the subject of a sprawling exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2005.

23 Canto XXXIV: Circle Nine, Cocytus, Compound Fraud: Round 4, Judecca, Treacherous to their Masters, from the series Thirty-Four Illustrations for Dante's Inferno Rauschenberg made one drawing for each Canto, or section, of Dante's poem The Inferno ( ). Together they are a virtual encyclopedia of modern-day imagery, made by transferring photographic reproductions from magazines or newspapers onto the drawing surface. This was accomplished by moistening the drawing sheet with a liquid that acts as a solvent for printer's ink. "I think a picture is more like the real world when it's made out of the real world," Rauschenberg said.
