3 Carbon fabrics high tenacity fibres Carbon fibres have versatile usable properties. The main motive for the development of carbon fibres has come from the aerospace industry with its need for a material with a combination of high strength, high stiffness and low weight. These high-tenacity (HT) fibres provide excellently balanced mechanical laminate properties. Without carbon fibres many constructive solutions for aerospace would never have been possible. In the energy industry, these reinforcing fibres are used to the realization of wind turbines and fuel cell technology for high-pressure gas tank and gas diffusion, used for oil exploration in risers and for the reprocessing of nuclear fuel in a centrifuge. In medical technology, there are carbon-fiber back into X- ray tables, prostheses and fixators. Industrial applications include rollers for the paper and printing industries, as well as optical and structural components in the automotive industry. For applications in the area of leisure are sports equipment (tennis racket, golf club shafts, bicycle frames, masts for sailing boats, surfboards, helmets, fishing rods) and musical instruments The applications of carbon fibres are very diverse! 4 Carbon fabrics (Bidiagonal/Unidirectional) Carbon fabrics unidirectional and bidiagonal are non-woven fabrics, the fibres are endless and parallel to each other and through a sweing thread or a heat-setting are held in position. Whether aerospace, boat building or motor sport, many areas increase their competitiveness by exploiting the benefist of multi-axial fabrics. 5 Aramid fabrics Aramid fabrics are made from high-performance fibres. Aramid fibres are characterised by very high tensile strength and modulus, low density and good heat resistance. 6 Glass filament fabrics (Silane / Finish) E-glass fibre is the most versatile and widely used of any reinforcement material, however other reinforcement materials. Glass filament fabrics can be manufactured with the weave types usual in textile technologies, in most cases plain, twill, and satin. The properties are determined by the weave type, the yarn number, and the yarn count (number of threads per cm). All fabrics for reinforcing are impregnated with special coupling agents. Silane fabrics exhibit a good strength and are suitable for polyester and epoxy resins. Finished fabrics have been treated with modified silane sizes. They feel slightly tacky, become quickly impregnated with resin, are very soft and smooth, and scarcely fray when cut. 8 Glass roving fabrics Textile glass rovings consist of one or a certain number of glass strands aligned almost parallel and bundled to form a twist-free cable. Rovings are processed to make roving fabrics, chopped textile glass (chopped glass fibre strands), mats, and chopped strands. In a number of manufacturing methods, e.g. winding and pultrusion, rovings are used directly as the reinforcing material. Roving fabrics made from textile glass rovings are of particular importance. With these, thick mould parts (e.g. in mould construction) can be made with few layers. Both the fibre content and the strength are greater by far than those of mat laminates, but lower than those of glass filament fabrics. That is very important, however, the peel ply serves other important functions as well. When applied over the wet layups, you have a surface that will allow you to squeegee trapped air out without allowing the glass layers to move and shift around. When the resin/fiberglass layup is cured and the peel ply is removed, the surface will be free of harmful sharp edges and spurs.
