2 The Bomb Bird This pattern was designed in honor of one of the coolest mobile device touch-screen applications ever conceived... Angry Birds by Rovio Mobile. MATERIALS Worsted weight acrylic yarn in black, white, gray, maroon, yellow, and orange Fiber fill Beads or beans for stuffing 9mm black plastic safety eyes (optional) Size E (3.5 mm) crochet hook Yarn needle Stitch marker STITCHES AND ABBREVIATIONS USED IN THIS PATTERN: CH chain stitch SC single crochet HDC half double crochet SL slip stitch DECR decrease ST stitch STS stitches MM move marker FO finish off For the project shown in the photographs, I used Red Heart Super Saver Enconomy Yarn. Colors used were: Body: Black #0312 Eyes: White #0311 and Grey Heather #0400 Brows: Burgundy #0376 Spot: White: #0311 Belly: Grey Heather #0400 Beak: Pumpkin #0254 Fuze: Bright Yellow #0324 and Black #0312 Note: When determining whether to use buttons or other small embellishments, keep in mind the age of the intended recipient. Doll eyes and other decorations may pose a choking hazard for children under three. A safer alternative for the very young is to sew eyes and any other decorations using embroidery thread or yarn.

3 PART 1: EYES (MAKE TWO) The eyes are made in circular rounds that are joined with a slip stitch (SL) to make an even transition. Use white yarn for the first round, then transition over to grey halfway through the second round. Round 1: CH 2. 6 SC in second chain from hook. Join with SL to first SC. CH 1. Round 2: 2 SC in each of the first three STS. Break white and join grey. Work 2 HDC in each of the remaining three STS. Round 3: Work one SL in each of the white STS remaining to complete the circle around the eye. FO, leaving a tail for sewing. Figure 1: Eyes PART 2: BELLY PATCH The belly patch is worked over a row of 17 CH STS using grey yarn. One stitch is removed after each turn to create the shaping. Row 1: CH 17. SC in second CH from hook and in next 14 STS. SL in remaining CH, CH 1 and turn. Row 2: Skip SL from row 1 and SC in next ST. Work 1 SC in each of the next 12 STS, SL in Row 3: Skip SL from previous row and SC in next ST. Work 1 SC in each of the next 11 STS, SL in Row 4: Skip SL from previous row and SC in next ST. Work 1 SC in each of the next 10 STS, SL in Figure 2: Belly patch Row 5: Skip SL from previous row and SC in next ST. Work 1 SC in each of the next 9 STS, SL in Row 6: Skip SL from previous row and SC in next ST. Work 1 SC in each of the next 8 STS, SL in Row 7: Skip SL from previous row and SC in next ST. Work 1 SC in each of the next 7 STS, SL in Row 8: Skip SL from previous row and SC in next ST. Work 1 SC in each of the next 6 STS, SL in Row 9: Skip SL from previous row and SC in next ST. Work 1 SC in each of the next 5 STS, SL in Row 10: Skip SL from previous row and SC in next ST. Work 1 SC in each of the next 4 STS, SL in Finishing: Work 4 SC across top, then continue to SC evenly around the outside edge of the piece. Join to first SC in round with SL. FO, leaving a tail for sewing.

4 PART 3: BEAK The beak uses a traditional amigurumi spiral. Use orange yarn and a stitch marker to track your rounds, if needed. Round 1: CH 2. 6 SC in second chain from hook. Place stitch marker in the last SC to mark the end of the round. Round 2: Work 2 SC in first ST, SC in each of the remaining STS (7 Round 3: Work 2 SC in first ST, SC in each of the remaining STS (8 Round 5: Work 2 SC in first ST, SC in each of the remaining STS (9 Figure 3: Beak Round 6: Work 2 SC in each of the first two STS, SC in each of the remaining STS (11 Round 7: SC in each ST around (11 Round 8: SC in first ST. PART 4: HEAD SPOT The bomb bird has a small, round, white spot on its forehead representing the glare on the shiny bomb exterior. This is made with white yarn. Round 1: CH 2. 6 SC in second chain from hook. Join with SL to first SC. FO, leaving a tail for sewing. PART 5: FUZE The fuze will be attached to the top of the head after the bird body is finished. For this piece, you will need yellow and black yarn. Round 1: With yellow, CH 2. 6 SC in second chain from hook. Round 2: Working in outside loops, SC in each ST around (6 SC). Break yellow. Round 3: Join black. SC in each ST around (6 SC). Place stitch marker in the last SC to mark the end of the round. Rounds 4-7: SC in each ST around (6 Round 8: *DECR over first two STS and SC in next. Repeat from * once more. FO, leaving a tail for sewing. Figure 4: Head tuft

5 PART 6: EYE BROWS The eye brows are made from one simple row of single crochet stitches, using maroon yarn. Row 1: CH 7. SC in second ST from hook and in each across (6 SC). FO, leaving a tail for sewing. Figure 5: Eyebrows PART 7: BODY The bomb bird s body is a sphere shape worked in black yarn. Because it is worked in a spiral, you may need a stitch marker to keep track of your rounds. Round 1: CH 2. 6 SC in second chain from hook. Place stitch marker in the last SC to mark the end of the round. Round 2: 2 SC in each ST around (12 Round 3: *2 SC in first SC, 1 SC in next. Repeat from * around (18 Round 4: *2 SC in first SC, 1 SC in each of next two STS. Repeat from * around (24 Round 5: *2 SC in first SC, 1 SC in each of next three STS. Repeat from * around (30 Round 6: *2 SC in first SC, 1 SC in each of next four STS. Repeat from * around (36 Round 7: *2 SC in first SC, 1 SC in each of next five STS. Repeat from * around (42 Round 8: *2 SC in first SC, 1 SC in each of next six STS. Repeat from * around (48 Round 9: SC in each ST around (48 Round 10: *2 SC in first SC, 1 SC in each of next seven STS. Repeat from * around (54 Rounds 11-20: SC in each ST around (54 Round 21: *DECR across first two STS. SC in each of the next seven STS. Repeat from * around (48 Rounds 22-24: SC in each ST around (48 Round 25: *DECR across first two STS. SC in each of the next six STS. Repeat from * around (42 Round 26: *DECR across first two STS. SC in each of the next five STS. Repeat from * around (36 Round 27: SC in each ST around (36

6 Note: Stop at this point to work on preliminary assembly. You do not have to finish off or cut the yarn, but be careful while sewing so as not to sew your working yarn to the inside of the bomb bird. That might make him mad... and we wouldn t want that now, would we? PART 8: PRELIMINARY ASSEMBLY 1. Count out 4-5 rounds from the bottom center of your bomb bird and place the long flat (chain) edge of the belly patch along this round. Using the leftover tail, begin stitching the gray belly to the bomb bird. See Figure 6 for reference. 2. Stitch the beak in place about 1 round above the center of the belly patch. Refer to Figure 7 for placement. 3. Place the eyes so that the the portion of the rounds with the HDC stitches face down and outward (see Figure 7). Leave a small amount of space between the eyes and the beak. 4. Attach the eyes. If using plastic safety eyes, push the shaft through both the white crocheted piece and the black portion of the body. Sew around the outside of the eyes with the tail left over from crocheting. Figure 6: Belly placement 5. Place the eyebrows overlapping the top of the eyes and on a slight angle so that the outside edge is slightly above the eye and the inside edge angles down toward the top of the beak. See cover photo for reference. 6. Stuff your bird. Note: I used surplus beads to give my bird a little heft but you could use beans or just plain fluff if you want a softer bird. 7. Continue with Part 9. Figure 7: Beak and eye placement PART 9: FINISHING THE BODY Round 28: *DECR across first two STS. SC in each of the next four STS. Repeat from * around (30 Round 29: *DECR across first two STS. SC in each of the next three STS. Repeat from * around (24 Round 30: *DECR across first two STS. SC in each of the next two STS. Repeat from * around (18 TIP: At this point, it s a good idea to add some extra fluff to make sure your bird s head doesn t comeout flat! Round 31: *DECR across first two STS. SC in next ST. Repeat from * around (12 Round 32: DECR around (6 SC). FO, leaving tail to gather remaining STS.

7 PART 10: FINAL TOUCHES 1. Using the tail left over from round 26, gather the remaining stitches and close up the hole in your bird s head. 2. Stitch the white spot in place on the bird s forehead using the tail from this piece. 3. Attach your the fuze to the top of the head and... Prepare for Battle!
