AATCC Test Method 132 Colorfastness to Drycleaning

Definitions Drycleaning - the cleaning of fabrics with organic solvents such as petroleum solvent, perchloroethylene or fluorocarbon

Purpose and Scope For determining the colorfastness of textiles to all kinds of drycleaning Not intended for the evaluation of the durability of textile finishes, or evaluating the resistance of colors to spot and stain removal procedures used by the drycleaner Gives an indication of results to be obtained from three commercial drycleanings

Principle A textile specimen in contact with cotton fabric, multifiber swatch and noncorrodible steel discs is agitated in perchloroethylene and dried in air. Color change and Staining are assessed: EP1 or EP7 EP2, EP8, or EP12

Apparatus and Materials Accelerated laundering machine Rotates closed canisters in a thermostatically controlled environment Adapter plates hold canisters in machine Stainless steel canisters sealed with solvent resistant gaskets Type ml Noncorrodible steel discs, 30± 2.0mm diameter x 3.0± 0.5mm Smooth, no rough edges 20.0 ± 2.0 g Undyed cotton twill cloth (270 ± 70 g/m 2 ) No finish 12.0cm x 12.0cm swatches Multifiber test fabrics (8mm or 15 mm) Perchloroethylene Crockmeter Test Cloth Detergent, Perk-Sheen

Specimens Fabrics Use three specimens, each 10 x 5cm Longer dimension parallel to the warp or wale direction Yarns Knit into fabric Use three specimens, each 10 x 5cm Longer dimension parallel to the wale direction Alternatively can be wound into skein

Specimens Wool Acrylic Polyester Nylon Cotton Acetate

Special Specimens For knits, attach cotton test cloth to back to prevent curling For pile fabrics, attach multifiber at top, with pile pointing down

Procedure Prepare a bag for each specimen Two squares of undyed cotton twill cloth 10 x 10cm inside dimensions Sew together on 3 sides

Procedure Place the specimen and 12 steel discs inside the bag and close by any convenient means (sewing, stapling, etc.)

Procedure In a fume hood, prepare the perchloroethylene/detergent solution Add 10 ml of detergent (Perk Sheen 324) to a 1000 ml volumetric flask filled partially with perchloroethylene. Shake or stir and then add perchloroethylene until the total volume equals 1000 ml Add 0.6 ml of water and shake or stir until the solution is no longer cloudy

Procedure While in the fume hood, place the bag containing the specimen and the steel discs in the standard 500 ml stainless steel container and add 200 ml perchloroethylene detergent solution at 30 +/- 2 C

Accelerated Laundering Machine Close the container and agitate the specimen for 30 min at 30 +/- 2 C in the specified equipment

Procedure, cont. Place the container in an adequately ventilated hood and remove the bag from the container Take the specimen out of the bag and place it between layers of blotter paper or cloth to remove excess solvent

Procedure Air dry the specimen in a hood, not exceeding 65 C. Condition the specimens at 65 +/- 5% relative humidity and 21 +/- 2 C for 1 hour before evaluating

Prepare for Evaluation Trim off raveled yarns Lightly brush off any lose fiber and yarn on the fabric surfaces. Brush pile fabric specimens to restore to same pile angle as standard Smooth or flatten out wrinkles

Prepare for Evaluation Specimens can be mounted on cards to aid in identification and handling Yarn skein specimens should be combed and brushed for improved alignment of yarns, before comparison with unwashed original

Evaluation Color Change Rate the color change of each test specimens using the Gray Scale for Color Change as instructed in Evaluation Procedure 1 Alternatively, rating can be done instrumentally using EP7 For improved accuracy, more than one rater is suggested

Evaluation Staining Rate the staining of the multifiber by using the Gray Scale for Staining EP2 or the 9- Step Chromatic Transference Scale EP8 Alternatively, rating can be done instrumentally using EP12 For improved accuracy, more than one rater is suggested

Report Average the observation made on each sample (3 specimens) Report the average to the nearest tenth of a grade point Report the grade determined for color change of the fabric specimen, and staining of the multifiber State which scale (or spectrophotometer) was used. Report which multifiber was used, and if the cotton fabric was used to prevent knit curling.
