4 This edition of "Cotton Counts Its Customers" contains revised estimates of cotton consumption by end uses for the calendar year 1957 and preliminary estimates for the year End use classifications are comparable to those reported in the Special Edition of "Cotton Counts Its Customers", except for a few changes which are indicated by footnotes. Section I of this edition summarizes by major uses: (A) cotton consumption,, and (B) cotton's share of the total market in terms of raw cotton equivalents. Summary data for the years 1955 and 1956 are also included in Section I for comparison with estimates for 1957 and 195. Estimates for years prior to 1955 are reported in the Special Edition of "Cotton Counts Its Customers", Section II lists the specific end uses within each major use. For each end use it contains detailed information on unit production, percent of the market held by cotton, estimated quantity of raw cotton consumed, and the approximate number of pounds of raw cotton required to produce one end use unit. Estimates in this edition are based on data compiled by the staff of the market research section of the National Cotton Council from published statistics and information from government agencies, trade associations and private companies - supplemented by information and estimates from many private companies and individuals. All estimates of cotton consumption relate to the volume of raw cotton required to produce that quantity of a given article which was manufactured in its final form in the United States during the calendar year. Domestic consumption of cotton in some of the smaller end uses and United States exports of fabric and yarn are not included in this publication. Domestic production of consumer products for export, covered by the end use classifications in this report, are included in the consumption estimates. The interest and cooperation of the many individuals in private companies, trade associations, and government agencies who contributed information for use in this publication is acknowledged with appreciation.

20 SECTION II: UNIT PRODUCTION, PERCENT OF MARKET HELD BY COTTON, COTTON CONSUMPTION BY UNF$, AND EQUIVALENT RAW COTTON REQUIRED PER UNIT, 1957 Revised and 1959 Preliminary Statistics on unit production, percent of the market held by cotton, estimated quantity of cotton consumed in each market, and the number of pounds of raw cotton required to produce one unit are presented below. As a result of space limitations, the complete statistical tabulations for each use and sub-use have not been presented. If the reader Is Interested in the tabulations, they may be reproduced by the following steps: a. Unit production multiplied by number of pounds of raw cotton required to produce one unit equals total market for all materials in terms of raw cotton equivalent pounds; b. Total market in terms of raw cotton equivalent pounds divided by 500 equals total market for all materials in terms of raw cotton equivalent bales; c. Total market for all materials in terms of raw cotton equivalent (pounds or bales) multiplied by percent of the market held by cotton equals estimated quantity of cotton consumed (pounds or bales). NOTE: To facilitate tabulating, all bale estimates have been rounded to the nearest ten bales. Insofar as possible, production data were obtained from Facts For Indus reports of the Bureau of the Census, United States Department of Commerce; and from information published by trade or industry organizations. Where such information was inadequate, supplementary data were obtained from industry representatives and private companies. Conversion factors are based on data reported in Cotton Counts Its Customers, Special Edition, with revisions where necessary to adjust for changes in fabric and/or yarn requirements per unit, and changes in fabric widths and weights. Revised conversion factors were based on information obtained from trade sources and from data reported in Bureau of the Census, Facts For Industry, Series M22T, 'Cotton Bread Woven Fabric, Average Width and Weight, First Quarter 1958". It is not the purpose of this report to show the consumption of materials other than cotton; however, the quantity of competing materials consumed in terms of cotton equivalents, can be determined from the percentage of the market held by cotton. Comments, additional data, and suggestions for improving future editions of this publication will be appreciated.
