Visit this pattern at to order. Please visit for a list of standard knitting abbreviations. Shown in size Small: 33 " Finished Chest Measurement This is a strictly feminine cardigan with lovely peplum waist and lots of pretty detailing. It's another great top-down design to minimize seaming and allow you the option of easily adjusting sleeve and body length. The collar, front, and peplum shaping inserts feature a simple mock cable rib (done using basic lace technique, no cable needles!). The sleeves are shown 3/4 length with a bold open lace medallion design and subtly flared shaping. The waist is further accented with a wide ribbon held in place with mock cable belt loops that appear to extend beautifully from each "gored" peplum shaping insert. The back features the same peplum styling and belt loops for a great-looking cardigan whether the wearer is coming or going! (If you're not a fan of belts, the cardigan also looks great if you leave off the belt and belt loops.) Knit in a soft, organically grown dyed cotton from Blue Sky Alpacas, available in beautifully vibrant colors, like the Mediterranean blue shown here. Visit SweaterBabe.com for more detailed photos, as well as yarn substitution suggestions. y page 1 y

Repeat ONLY Rows 3 through 16 for pattern. NOTES 1) Instructions are written for the smallest size, with instructions for the larger sizes in parentheses, respectively. PLEASE go through the pattern first, highlighting or circling ALL instructions that are for the size you are knitting. This will help avoid any size confusion as you are knitting. 2) This pattern is knit in one piece from the neck down. The only seaming or sewing is for the underside of the sleeves, the underarms, the belt loops, and the button. The button bands are knit in. 3) "pm" = place marker and "sm" = slip marker. When cont in patts as established or working even, just slip the markers as you encounter them, unless otherwise noted. 4) "m1" = make 1 st by lifting up the strand between sts (the one you just knit and the one you are about to knit on your left needle) using the left needle from front to back, then knitting into the back of it to create a new stitch. 5) "m1-p" = make 1 st on the purl side by lifting up the strand between sts using the left needle from front to back, then purling into the back of it to create a new stitch. To purl into the back of it, you will need to grab the back from the left side to the right (which is the opposite of how you did with the m1 above). 6) "yo, skp" = yarn over, slip 1 st knitwise, knit 1, pass slipped st over knit st. The yo creates the hole for the button and the skp decreases 1 st to make up for the adding of a st with the yo. 7) "[m1-l, sm, m1-r]" = make 1 st by knitting into the left strand of the st 2 rows below the st just knit; slip marker; make 1 by knitting into the right strand of the st 1 row below the next st. A decorative increase of 2 sts is made, which will mimic the look of a raglan sleeve seam. 8) "cast on X sts at the end of the row" = use the single strand cast on method to add sts to the end or multiple sts in the middle of a row. 9) Row 2 of Mock Cable Rib temporarily decreases 2 sts per cable. Row 3 of the Mock Cable Rib adds the 2 sts back. Unless otherwise noted, the st count at the end of y page 3 y
4 an inc or dec row will always count each panel of the Mock Cable Rib as 7 sts (even if there are only 5 because you just completed Row 2 of the Mock Cable Rib). DIVIDE FOR LEFT SLEEVE This photo below is to illustrate what your knitting generally looks like so far (never mind that the pink example is a child's size and there is no lace, etc.). The next step is to divide up all the sts into the LEFT SLEEVE, RIGHT SLEEVE, and then the LEFT FRONT, RIGHT FRONT, and BACK will be joined together to make up the body. This is what your knitting will look like after you have finished this next section (i.e. the LEFT SLEEVE). The other sts remain on your circular needle, unworked, while you knit and complete the LEFT SLEEVE. [Note: Count the 2 missing sts from EACH Mock Cable Rib for the total st count.] Rep last 4 rows 6 (6, 6, 6, 7, 7, 8) times (adding an additional st at each outer edge of each of the 4 Peplum Shaping Mock Cable Rib Panel inserts in Rev St st every 4 rows, i.e. the bolded sts will inc by 1 every 4th row) = 184 (200, 216, 232, 256, 272, 296) sts. Work even for 2 (2, 4, 4, 2, 4, 2) more rows, or until work measures 20 (20 ¼, 20 ¾, 21, 21 ¾, 22 ½, 23 ¼)" [51 (51.5, 52.5, 53.5, 55, 57, 59) cm] from beginning, or until desired length of cardigan, ending with a RS row. Bind off all sts in patt, i.e. bind off knit sts in knit, purl sts in purl. FINISHING BELT LOOPS Using larger needles, co 3 sts, leaving a 6-8" tail to use for sewing. Row 1 [WS]: K1, (p1, k1, p1) all in next st, k1. Row 2: P1, k3, p1. Row 3: K1, p3, k1. Row 4: P1, sl 1 k2tog psso, p1. Rep last 4 rows twice. Bind off knit sts in knit and purls sts in purl. Cut yarn, leaving a 6-8" tail for sewing. Make 3 more Belt Loops. Sew each belt loop right above one of the 4 Peplum Shaping Mock Cable Rib panels, positioning the top of the belt loop 11 rows above the beginning of the panel. Remember to place the belt loops UPSIDE DOWN since this pattern is from the top-down. This will make the Mock Cable Ribs of the Belt Loops look like they continue from the Mock Cable Ribs of the peplum shaping inserts. y page 9 y
10 SLEEVE AND UNDERARM SEAMS Sew sleeve seams. Sew extra cast on stitches of sleeves to extra cast on stitches of body: This photo shows the view after the sleeve seam (at bottom center) is finished (is you worked the sleeves as rows). You then sew the cast on stitches of the body to the cast on stitches of the sleeves (it will be "perpendicular" to the sleeve seam). For a neater finished look, you may wish to sew with RS facing so you can see where to sew to avoid any holes. Sew button opposite buttonhole using sewing needle and thread. Weave in all loose ends. Steam or block lightly, in particular, the Open Medallion Lace cuffs, which should be pinned and stretched out. y page 10 y
