Shot Time (s) Mise en Scene/action Cinematography Editing Sound 1 6 Left of screen, close up, is dark in jungle shadows. The screen is cut into thirds. Left is dark foreground, blocking view. Middle is lighted mid-ground. Middle and right of screen are divided by large, dead tree with cradle branching near top. Left is like center, open to jungle, light (see cinematography). Kong enters from right, carrying Ann, who is limp but conscious. Kong looks at Tree, then down, then back at tree, standing upright with second look. This is towards the camera. Bends down to put hand on ground, and looks at Ann. Emotion is expressed in the length of the look (1 second). The length of this look implies a tenderness for Ann that goes to show that she is in fact in love with Ann and Black and white. Deep focus shot. From jungle, through clearing, into jungle background; foreground is dark. Midground is light. Background is lighted with natural shadows. No camera Hard cut into shot. Comes from a back and forth sequence of men running through the jungle, chasing Kong (and Ann). Continues this motif for several shots. does not want to hurt her in any way. tubas. 2 6 Screen is cut in thirds again. Left and right of screen have plants right to the camera (out of focus). Center third is open to show a narrow pathway, surrounded fully by jungle plants. Eight men run through shot together from right to left. They yell, and few look backwards, running from a dinosaur (previous sequences). A ninth man enters scene after first eight have exited (less than one second delay). He gets caught on a tree branch, looks fervently over shoulder. 3 9 Kong has turned around since the last shot, and is facing left, with Ann in- Medium focus. Jungle with natural shadows. Camera set in plants, shooting through gap. No camera Back to clearing with Kong. Much closer shot Hard cut from man looking over (Throughout scene, non-diegetic sound is prominent in orchestration. This involves loud, upbeat music to match the action, danger, and suspense of the scene.) When shot cuts into Kong form men running (previous shot), the music deepens, and becomes much more sinister and brooding. Possibly French horns, trombones, and Yelling of running men over music. Back to human danger music, from nonhuman, ominous music. Music does not change between men

hand. The screen is cut in half by large dead tree now, as we have zoomed in considerably. Kong is on the right, the side away from the men and the village, but is looking back toward it. Kong turns quickly toward camera in fluid motion, then back toward left while roaring. Kong places Ann in cradle of dead tree, and beats chest. Kong moves to left (toward men off screen). Shot lingers for half second on Ann in tree. Again, Kong s love for Ann is apparent here. Also, it is interesting the Ann is placed atop a large phallic symbol seems interesting. Ann is from the phallic order of patriarchal society. Does Kong understand this, and thus trust that for a moment she will be safe upon this phallic structure? Does Kong understand that to attain her goal she must accept the phallic structure and work with(in) it? 4 7 Again, screen is cut into thirds. Only the center has shot of background the rest is blocked by trees. Enter one man (Jack/hero) from absolute bottom-left. He runs to center of screen, looks away from camera (over blank mid-ground), turns, yells and motions to followers. Enter followers through the bushes (two come from center bottom, unlike the rest who follow the hero s path, and all exit left of screen. 5 6 Log is empty when shot opens. Immediately men begin to run across from left to right. Various men stumble, than before. Dark shadows over foreground and mid-ground. Background lighter (for depth mostly) Shadows and lighting natural. No Close shot in jungle. No camera Foreground dark under shadows from trees. Background light with distance. No mid-ground visible. Complex shot. No camera No foreground. Background shoulder. Disorienting because the cut is to Kong, yet Kong is in front of men. First shot that does not go back to Kong after and Kong for this shot. Kong roars loudly. Hero yells Come on! Music is same. Music continues.

but none fall. When half of the men are all the way across, and the last man is half way across, shot ends. Log is the phallus, the canyon is the phallus. 6 4 Kong enters from right. Pauses, looks back off screen right (toward Ann) while standing, back to left while hunching, back over shoulder right (but only, as far as to look at camera direction), then walks away and left until hidden by tree on left of screen Men run across log away from camera (toward Kong) yet are immediately arrested by lead man (hero) when he look to right of screen. One must assume Kong is coming. Men begin to turn around and run back toward camera-side of canyon. Kong enters 4 seconds into shot from upper right background. Kong reaches log as all men are on it. At this time, first man (was last in line) falls, impeding progress. Kong stands tall, growling loudly and beating chest. Last man in line (hero) swings off log and ground by vine to land in cave. Kong seems to not have the angle from which to see this, but this does not seem to matter later. is only trees. Camera centered over deep (no bottom visible) gorge. Mid-ground is large log traversing canyon. Bottom of screen is dark. Top of screen is dark. Shadows are natural. In jungle, no foreground (mist). Close mid-ground trees dark with shadows. Mid-ground seems to stop early. Background very far. Mirrors illusion of gorge, like shot 4. No Darker shadows. No camera Scenery not as lifelike (more claymation in the scene). Camera set on what would be the right wall of canyon, to what was the foreground side of log. Oddly, angle is below log. Horizontal line just above center of shot created by edge of canyon wall until the exact center of screen, then continued by log coming across (toward) the camera, and off screen to right bank. Right side of screen is mirrored top to bottom, showing men. Pacing is picking up. This long shot from below the log sets up the struggle between Kong and the men, but also, because of its low angle (from the vagina ) highlights the prominence of the power of the landscape, the natural, the feminine. Music. Music continues. Men are yelling. Kong is roaring.

8 2 Hero climbs down vine, swings into cave, and turns toward camera while look off-screen right, toward men on log. This becomes important later, since Jack, the hero, is stepping off the phallus and into the vagina. He takes refuge in the vagina, and compared to Denham seems to have no malice or illwill toward Kong. While he does want Ann back, he is also willing to leave well-enough alone and accept Kong s sexuality. 9 5 Cut to Kong standing, mid bellow, mouth open, pounding chest. Kong proceeds to grab end of log, away from camera, with men clinging to it for life and screaming. Kong rolls log left, then right Close-up on one man facing camera, looking right. Four other men holding on to log and each other struggle to stay on log Men holding on to log. Kong lifts log by end with roots, and holds up to chest height. Man closest to Kong falls into gorge. as is left. On right, a cave is visible in the wall of canyon, mirrored with lighting by shadowed tree above. On left, long midground, side light mirrors open jungle light above. Medium shot of cliff wall with cave centered horizontally. Cave floor at midline of screen. Shadows natural. Medium shot. Right and left of screen are blocked by trees. Men centered on log, going away from camera, with Kong at far end, just off center to left. Close-up.! body length. Very close somparatively speaking. Lighting natural. Log goes from upper left to lower right, mostly off screen. Back to shot 9 No No Hard Cut. Camera pans down and right very gently for final second. First pan in sequence. No Music continues. Music and screams. Music, yelling. Continues

12 2 Hero faces camera, watches man fall (never on screen). Moves forward in cave, knees with hands on edge to watch off screen as man falls Man falls, hits a vine the hangs from one wall to the other (from upper left to lower right), and lands on the ground dead. This shot in the bottom of the gorge is reminiscent of the vagina dentate. Also, throughout the sequence of the last few shots, we see the men clinging helplessly to the power of the phallus that they took for granted on the other side of the wall. Medium shot. Hero in cave. Natural lighting. No angle. Cave framed by canyon wall and vines. Bottom of canyon. Walls frame either side. Screen in thirds. Left and right dark with mid-ground canyon walls. Center bright with light shining off walls. In background, canyon is very narrow from top of screen to halfway down, then moves out wider in curve on either side to bottom. Rocks very sharp and jagged. Close-up of cave with Hard Cut. No Movement. No Pacing has obviously picked up dramatically from the beginning of sequence Hero looks down, jolted back with horror at his comrade s death. hero Kong rocks log, like shot 9. Shots 9 and 11. No Longer shot for Kong See shot 10. Shot 10. Hard cut, same pan down/right as shot 10. Music. Music. Music, yelling. Music, yelling Shot 15. Another man falls. Shot 15. No 18 2 Shot 13. Shot 13. Music, scream Shots 15 and 17. Three more men fall. Shot Shot 13. Shot Shot 15. Kong puts the log down and stands, roaring, pounding his chest. Two men are log one on top, and one hanging from the side. Kong takes two swipes at the one on the log, who ducks Shot 15. Music becomes deeper, more ominous.

both times Head shot of Kong with shoulders. Mouth is open, roaring; eyes are wide, nostrils are flared. He punches the air three times, twice with his right, once with his left. He shakes his head vigorously from side to side. Close-up of Kong. Head and shoulders only. Over left shoulder there are dark bushes; over the right sun is shining through mist and trees Shot 15. Another man falls. Shot Shot 13. Falling man breaks another Shot 13. vine Like shot 10, only one man remains. He clings to a broken branch on the log, and looks down into the pit. The log takes up the whole screen, going basically directly from left (Kong) to right. As Kong lifts the log, the man disappears twice off the top of the screen once in the middle of the shot, once at the end. The man has a 8 knife in a leather sheath on his hip, attached to his belt. Close-up, like shot 10, only further to the left on the log. Also, this shot seems to be further out over the gorge. One man remains Kong lifts the log, and this time begins to move it parallel to the canyon. This moves him from center to left-ofcenter. Kong looks down into the gorge Log and man are out of shot, above. At cut, they begin to come down into frame as Kong (off screen left) drops them into the gorge. Man looks below as he begins to fall with log We return here to shot 5, and see the whole canyon with the log traversing its walls. However, midway through shot, the log falls with man still on it. Also, Kong is now visible on left bank, watching the log fall. Music, and the man screams. Shot 15. Violins, faster paced music. Shot 25 Music, man screams. Return to Shot 5. Canyon traversed by log. Music, scream Return to the bottom of the gorge. The Like shot 13, only the Music indicates

log falls from left mid-ground, directly across center of screen, blocking the view of the back of the canyon, towards the right, into the near mid-ground. As it crashes against the right wall, it breaks in two, and comes to rest on top of the dead men who preceded it. Kong has defeated the crew and destroyed their symbol of phallic power. She will continue this struggle throughout the rest of the film, only without the success that she has in this scene We return to the hero, still in the small cave in the canyon wall, who is looking down when the shot begins. He the glances up and to the right (to where Kong is off screen, only there is no way he can see him. camera has moved over so that the long shot down the walls is vertically even with the right 1/3 portion of the screen instead of the center. Return to shot 12, hero in cave. No camera angle. Lighting natural. ominous defeat. Shot 29.
