2 Plainedge Public Library 1060 Hicksville Road Massapequa, NY A guide for browsing the Plainedge area in the 1940 Census Images The 1940 census records were released by the US Na onal Archives on April 2, 2012 a er a mandatory 72 year wai ng period. The census is being indexed by a community of volunteers, and un l that task is completed, you can s ll browse the digital images to find your ancestors. To access the census images of Plainedge in 1940, you need to know the enumera on district [ED]. The ED for Plainedge is Navigate to h p://1940census.archives.gov/ge ng started/ Use the Do you know the 1940 enumera on district number? sec on of the page. In the drop down list, select New York and then enter in the Enumera on District field. 2

3 You will be taken to this page. 3

4 You will see three boxes in the center of the page. Select the Census schedules box. It will turn red. Move your mouse over the graphic and you should see a menu appear. Select the view full screen. 4

5 The following screen will be displayed. You can use the sliders to shi the display of the current Image around. You can also change to a different image ( there are 68 images in the Plainedge ED) by clicking on the Prev or Next bu on on the top right of the page. The enumera on was generally recorded from south to north. (The census taker did revisit some areas, so there are some excep ons of that general order.) To assist in loca ng general areas of Plainedge, use the following main East West arteries. Merrick Rd is on image 25 Jerusalem Ave is on image 39 Boundary Ave is on image 40 Hempstead Turnpike (Fulton) is on image 34 Central Park Ave is on image 44 These are just star ng points so you will have to browse around the adjacent pages to find specific loca ons. *** A Dra copy of a street guide is available on pages 7 10 *** 5
