Agenda Geocoding Overview and Requirements Geocoding in Desktop Geocoding with a Service
What is Geocoding? A GIS operation to transform a description of a location such as a pair of coordinates, an address, or a name of a place to a location on a map New York Street - Well Head BF N, W
Demo Desktop Overview
Requirements for Geocoding An understanding of the process Data to be geocoded Locator(s) and reference data
Requirements for Geocoding An Understanding of the Geocoding Process: Prepare your addresses Build or obtain reference data Determine address locator style Build or use an address locator Locate addresses, rematch remaining addresses
Requirements for Geocoding Data to be Geocoded: A Table of : Addresses New York Street, Redlands, CA Place Names Mount Rushmore Descriptive Locations - Well Head BF-245 A Single Location: Address 8615 Westwood Center Drive, Vienna, VA Place Name Grand Canyon Descriptive Location - 50 Feet NW of Main Street, Fairfax, VA 22030
Requirements for Geocoding An Understanding of the Geocoding Process: Prepare your addresses Build or obtain reference data Determine address locator style Build or use an address locator Locate addresses, rematch remaining addresses
Reference Data Many sources - StreetMap data - Your own data - Data vendors - Data shared on ArcGIS.com
Requirements for Geocoding An Understanding of the Geocoding Process: Prepare your addresses Build or obtain reference data Determine address locator style Build or use an address locator Locate addresses, rematch remaining addresses
What is a Locator? Data, rules and indexes that are used for geocoding Can be used locally or through a service Locator Streets, address points, postal points Address rules and conventions Address Information Rules Indexes Reference data Map Features
Ways to find locators for geocoding ArcGIS Online World Geocoding Service StreetMap Premium Products from Esri Geocoding can be done with locators or geocode services from various sources Users locators shared at Arcgis.com Build your own locators with ArcGIS Desktop
Geocoding Components Table of Addresses Geocode services Address Locator Geocoded features
Geocoding with a locator Table of Addresses Address Locator Geocoded features
Requirements for Geocoding An Understanding of the Geocoding Process: Prepare your addresses Build or obtain reference data Determine address locator style Build or use an address locator Locate addresses, rematch remaining addresses
What is an Address Locator Style Template containing geocoding properties Choose style based on properties of: - Address data: address information to geocode - Reference data: geometry and attribute values Locator styles can be customized to support international addresses
Locator Style Example US Address Dual Ranges Reference Data = Street Network Main Street, Anytown, ST MAIN STREET 120 Main Street, Anytown, ST
Requirements for Geocoding An Understanding of the Geocoding Process: Prepare your addresses Build or obtain reference data Determine address locator style Build or use an address locator Locate addresses, rematch remaining addresses
Demo Build a Locator
Composite Locator Combines multiple locators - Geocode against multiple datasets - Cascade/Fallback geocoding - Spatially disjointed datasets
Requirements for Geocoding An Understanding of the Geocoding Process: Prepare your addresses Build or obtain reference data Determine address locator style Build or use an address locator Locate addresses
Demo Composite Locator
Geocoding with a geocode service Table of Addresses Geocode services Geocoded features
Desktop: Geocoding with a geocode service Geocode services published with ArcGIS Server
Desktop: Geocoding with a geocode service ArcGIS Online (arcgis.com)
Demo Desktop Geocoding with a Service
The ArcGIS Online World Geocoding Service World Geodcoding Service found at: Requires a subscription to an ArcGIS Online organization, as it consumes credits during batch geocoding - 80 Credits per 1,000 geocodes - The old locators used prior to SP1 are currently still accessible at the following URL, but will be inaccessible once an existing subscription expires
Countries included in the World Geocoding Service: Most up to date list can be found at: -> Help -> World Geocoding Service Level 1: Highest quality geocoding experience. Address searches are likely to result in accurate matches to PointAddress and StreetAddress levels. Level 2: Good quality geocoding experience. Address searches often result in PointAddress and StreetAddress level matches, but sometimes match to StreetName and Admin levels. Level 3: Fair quality geocoding experience. Address searches sometimes result in street-level matches, but more often match to StreetName and Admin levels.
Geosearch and Batch Geocoding in ArcGIS Online
Geosearch One entry at a time Users type in a description of a feature such as a mountain range, lake, building, city, address, etc, and the map zooms to that location The result may be displayed on a map, but the result is not stored for later use Example: Find address or place box in the ArcGIS.com map viewer Geosearch services require no fee
Batch Geocoding Convert a table of addresses or descriptions into x,y coordinates and append the results to existing records in a database Published geocoding services internal or public may be free, but The ArcGIS Online World Geocoding Service requires an ArcGIS Online subscription
Demo Geocoding in the ArcGIS Online Map Viewer
Custom App Using the World Geocoding Service When making a request, you need to provide the identity of named users from your subscription. - Prompt end users to sign in - Store credentials with the application Find out methods and samples here: -> help -> World Geocoding Service -> Batch Geocode Authentication
Demo Batch Geocoding in Custom App
