13 Corvaja s latest masterpiece showcases true innovation in goldsmithing technology. He has created the lightest, most intricate of objects with his favourite material, 18ct gold. The beautiful Mandala Bowl defies belief in its weightlessness. Around two thirds of its volume is air, which creates an overriding sense of transparency and allows for a captivating play of light over its geometric golden structure. This unique object is composed of approximately 4,000 metres of 18ct gold wire, but fits comfortably in the palm of your hand. Weighing just 82 grams, the Mandala Bowl measures 4.5cm high and 11.2cm in diameter. As is typical for Corvaja, this piece has been painstakingly constructed under a microscope using fine gold wires measuring 0.05mm and 0.1mm thick. Corvaja has stretched and arranged the wire in a geometric pattern over many layers and fixed them in place through use of minute bonding points created in a laboratory vacuum. In effect he created a flat disc structure, which he then hammer- raised into a bowl shape using wooden doming blocks and punches.
