2 A Message From NESA NESA s mission is to work with existing county and state economic development organizations to create new jobs and increase the per capita wage of the citizens of the North Eastern region of South Carolina at a rate faster than per capita growth rates for the state and the nation. As we close the book on 2017 and move forward into 2018, we look back on a whirlwind of a year and one that not only generated results but also paved the way for even more growth in our region. We would like to thank all of our county members and private sector investors who have contributed to the success we all enjoyed this year. Since the inception of NESA, bringing jobs and capital investment to our region has been our mission. We are pleased to report that 2017 was a record year for announced capital investment with companies investing more than $857 million. In addition, these companies announced the creation of 2,266 new jobs, the second highest number on record. Moving forward, Inland Port Dillon, which is scheduled to open in March 2018, will forever change the logistics of our region and will generate business opportunities that have not previously existed. This is a game changer for us and won t just move people and cargo but will also move our region toward the prosperity and economic stability that we have all sought. We must continue to combine our resources and work as a region to promote economic growth. When one county wins, all win. Jobs are regional and continuing to improve the area is paramount to our ongoing development both from a new business perspective and from an existing industry perspective. Our region will rise to the challenge with your help. Our pursuit of even more jobs is relentless. Last year, NESA doubled the number of business development missions and site selector visits and in 2018 we will pursue an equally aggressive schedule with both domestic and international outreach planned. In 2017, we added 90 leads to our pipeline of companies considering the region. While only a small fraction of these companies will locate here, these leads represent the opportunity to compete for 14,000 jobs and $3 billion in capital investment. Competition is real and we rely heavily on leadership and support from our member counties and investors as we compete to win. RESEARCH MARKETING NESA markets the region locally, domestically, and internationally and provides its services to each county economic development group for specific marketing projects. NESA has access to numerous databases and research resources that are used to provide up-todate information to help clients make informed decisions about locating a facility in the region. SITE SELECTION NESA helps identify the best buildings or sites based on our clients needs. Extensive research and guided site tours with county economic developers allow companies to make fully educated decisions. BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT NESA encourages its local economic developers to participate in its domestic and international business development missions. These missions are organized, planned, and executed by NESA. INCENTIVES NESA coordinates with its county allies and the South Carolina Department of Commerce to develop competitive incentives packages. PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT NESA supports its counties through product development assistance and initiatives by offering grants and other opportunities to local economic developers. WORKFORCE Resources offered by the region s three universities and four technical colleges, along with ReadySC, provide companies with a world-class workforce that will ensure our clients profitability and success. 5 6

8 BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT Inland Port Dillon GAMECHANGER - Senator Luke Rankin NESA Executive Committee Chairman December 2017 Expected to be completed during the first quarter of 2018, Inland Port Dillon continues to move forward. Site work has begun and structures are beginning to go up on site. NESA noticed an increase in activity throughout 2017, directly linked to the port s development and in anticipation of its opening in We expect to see this trend continue this year. Inland Port Dillon is an exciting expansion of SC Ports Authority s operational footprint. It provides new intermodal capabilities important to overall volume growth of the Port and will significantly expand our reach in markets throughout the Carolinas. We look forward to serving the international supply chain needs of our customers through Inland Port Dillon and are confident that the facility will serve as a catalyst for job creation and economic development well into the future. - Jim Newsome President and CEO S.C. 9 MARKETING NESA s 2017 marketing strategy focused on re-imagining the organization through our website, printed materials and advertising campaigns. We accomplished this by visiting our existing industries throughout the region and gathering testimonials, photos and videos of their operations. Additionally, we continued to assist our partner counties with their marketing efforts and promoting the region both nationally and internationally. We love this place; that s why we stay here. We could be anywhere we want to in the world, anywhere in the United States, any major community, but we choose to be in Northeast South Carolina. - Roger P.
