1 Utah s ASSE Chapter Newsletter February 2018 Thank You! Members Thank you all for your efforts and help in our 3 rd Annual Dinner and Silent Auction event held February 24, It was a very successful and fun event. We plan on holding this event again next February. Dinner from the Olive Garden was again very tasty and well received. A success. Our Guest Speaker was very good and provided lots of great information and hand-outs for those attending. Another success. Our initial total from the event, per Trevor Hinckley, is - $2, for our scholarship and education funds. A success for sure. And one last special Thanks to Danielle Denne and WCF for hosting this event for the past 3 years. It has worked out excellent for all. Message from the Board by: Keith Crumpton Hello ASSE members, I am very grateful for the privilege of serving as a contributing member of our 384 individual safety professionals for the past few years. The monthly safety tour and technical meetings, upcoming Ritchey science fair judging at the end of this March (we need volunteers) and monetarily rewards bright burgeoning 9-12 grade students for their related ingenuous projects is in itself an appreciation of our best hope for our culture. Engaging members in learning new, true, and tried techniques with the best evidence helps us all to be better at helping others in the workplace and at home. Our 3 rd annual ASSE Silent Auction Fundraiser upcoming on Feb 22 nd is a meaningful opportunity to support our Chapter s efforts to increase funding for the future Safety professionals with their academic needs in perpetuity. 6 PAST PRESIDENT Danielle Denne AUTOMATIC SUCCESSION
7 PRESIDENT Dan Fegel, CSP, CSHM Dan Fegel, CSP, CSHM is the Program Safety Manager for the construction of the $ 3.6 billion Salt Lake City Airport Redevelopment Program (ARP). With over 25 safety professionals working on the ARP, Dan enjoys the opportunity to associate and assist them with improving safety. When completed this project will serve over 24 million passengers per year. With over 21 years of experience as a safety professional, Dan has helped several employers in the community and throughout the region effectively reduce their risk, control loss, and prevent injury and illness through implementation of effective strategies. After receiving a B.S. from BYU, Dan started his career as a Compliance Officer at UOSH. Since then he has worked in a variety of safety roles in Construction, General Industry and Law Enforcement. Dan has received a CSP and CSHM, he was elected as the Utah Chapter Safety Professional of the Year in Additionally, he has given back to the community by serving on multiple exam writing committees for the BCSP for various certifications, has spoken at many conferences and contributes to a variety of local committees. When not working, Dan enjoys spending time with his family and playing guitar.
8 PRESIDENT-ELECT David Holland, CHST David Holland, CHST, is a safety professional with over 23 years of experience in health, safety and environmental management. He is the owner and president of Wasatch Safety Group, a safety consulting company. David provides training, support and program development to general industry, construction, and mining clients throughout Utah, Idaho, Wyoming and Nevada. He is also the safety consultant for the Utah chapter of the Associated General Contractors and the Utah Plumbing & Heating Contractors Association. David is an accomplished public speaker and regularly presents entertaining and insightful messages to corporations, associations, and safety and health conferences.
9 SECRETARY Sarah Galvez Sarah is currently in charge of company safety at Younique, LLC. Younique. Is a direct sales make-up company with facilities all over the world. There are 600+ employees in the Utah location. I started Younique s safety program from scratch and have been very successful in creating and maintaining a culture of safety. Younique has had an amazing safety record and is below industry averages for injuries. I am also a certified forklift instructor, have past experience in hazardous materials clean-up, food inspections, and community health and fundraising.
10 TREASURER Trevor Hinckley Trevor Hinckley, CSP, CIH, is a Safety, Health, and Environmental Manager for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. In his work for the Church, he has supported the safety efforts of a wide range of industrial operations including agriculture, food processing, warehousing, second hand retail, semi-tractor/trailer fleet, and facility maintenance. Previous to working for the Church, Trevor was an industrial hygienist at the Department of Energy s Idaho National Laboratory site. Trevor holds a B.S. in Public Health from Utah State University.
11 MEMBERSHIP CHAIR Robert Weston, CSP Robert Weston has worked in the safety and health field for over 15 years, he is a Certified Safety Professional and Professional Member of the ASSE. He recently started his own safety management, training and consulting company with the intent to help smaller organizations achieve safety excellence without having the high overhead cost of a safety professional. He has completed his Masters Degree in Occupational Safety and Health from Columbia Southern University. Robert was most recently employed by Komatsu Equipment Company where he worked as their Safety Director, he has also worked in the construction, mining, petro chemical industry as well as general industry environments. Robert has a strong passion for employee safety and health and has helped past employers reach and exceed many of their organizational goals for safety.
12 DELEGATE TO HOD #1 Andy Crossland Andy Crossland is currently serving as one of the Utah Chapter s Delegates. He is a Professional Member and has been an active ASSE member throughout his entire professional career holding other leadership roles including being twice elected to Chapter President in San Diego, California. Currently he is the Salt Lake City Division Safety Manager for Core Mark International. Andy would be proud to continue to serve and represent our Chapter as a Delegate.
13 DELEGATE TO HOD #2 Nathan Montour Nathan Montour, MBA, is the National Safety Manager for Extra Space Management, Inc. one of the leading Self Storage management companies throughout the United States with over 1530 locations. Nathan has worked in construction and real estate management for over 22 years and acquired over 10 years of safety experience throughout his career. In his current role, Nathan oversees both safety and loss control efforts and has developed and implemented policy and controls that has minimized injuries and loss nationwide.
14 MAL - GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS CHAIR Patrick J. Salandi, CSP Patrick Salandi, CSP, has been a Project Safety Supervisor for Jacobsen Construction for the last 15 years helping ensure the safety of workers on large construction projects and providing support for the corporate safety program by developing training programs, industrial hygiene protocols, conducting accident investigations, and doing jobsite inspections. After graduating with a BS in Chemical Engineering in 1985, Pat also worked as a loss control consultant for several large workers compensation and multi-lines insurance carriers for another 16 years where he did risk assessments and helped a variety of clients develop effective safety programs. In addition to his current job assignments, Pat has been an Outreach Trainer since 1995 and enjoys his opportunities to teach for the Rocky Mountain Center for Occupational and Environmental Health. He has been an instructor in the OSHA 510 course since 2012 and the course chair for this course since Pat has also been a guest lecturer at the annual Utah Safety and Industrial Hygiene Conference several times.
15 MAL - NEWSLETTER EDITOR Ed Henkels, CSP, CUSP Ed has over 20 years experience in the safety field. He started his career at Thiokol (now Orbital ATK) at Promontory, UT. Following business school, he became the business administrator for Consystec, an engineering consulting firm in New York. Later he lived in several different places while a safety manager for Henkels & McCoy, a nationwide utility construction company. In 2017, Ed moved to Salt Lake City. He is now principal for Terra Linda Services, a consulting and training firm. Ed has been an active member of the ASSE since He holds a BS in OSH from USU, and an MBA from Westminster College. Ed is a CSP, CUSP, an OSHA 10/30 Construction trainer, and an OSHA 10 T&D trainer for the electric power industry.

Safety Professional for more than 38 years, in various industries. Manager for more than 25 years. BS Degree from Weber State in Manufacturing Engineering, and Industrial Engineering Certification from MTM Associates. Extensive resume in all Health, Safety and Environmental fields. Numerous awards and commendations. Recipient of the BCSP Award of Excellence Serving as an ASSE Utah Chapter Board member for more than 17 years, with service as Large, Chapter Delegate, Vice President, President Elect, President (twice), & Past President.
18 MAL - STUDENT SECTION MENTOR BYU & U OF U Robert K. Gardner, ARM Rob Gardner is currently serving as a Technical Consultant II for Liberty Mutual Insurance Risk Control Services and is stationed in Salt Lake City, Utah. His loss control specialty is Organizational Practices which encompasses Behavioral Principles, Safety Leadership and the use of Systems Thinking technologies. Working with management and employee crossfunctional teams is a major focus. Rob works with companies of all sizes including some Fortune 100 Companies to assist them in reducing risk, improving their loss experience, engaging employees in meaningful safety work and evolving their safety climate and culture.
19 MAL - GENERAL ASSIGNMENTS 1 OF 4 Craig Allen, CSP, CIH, MPH Craig has enjoyed a 30-plus year career as an Occupational Safety and Health professional. He joined the United States Air Force immediately following high school and spent 9 years on active duty in various assignments worldwide working in tactical aircraft maintenance. Upon leaving the Air Force, he was a Loss Control Engineer working for a national insurance company. In this capacity, he became involved in fire safety, life safety, and occupational safety as a SH&E Consultant. The majority of his time was spent on large construction projects and working with manufacturers throughout the Southwest and Intermountain region. An opportunity to devote 100% of his time to improving and promoting safety practice first presented itself in 1995, at which time he joined WCF as a Loss Prevention Representative. In this capacity, he was able to help employers develop occupational safety programs, and provide training that would help protect the lives and health of our State s workforce. In 2007, Craig joined Intermountain Healthcare and currently serves as the Director of Safety, Security, and Environmental Health. Craig is passionate about safety and the general health and well being of all members of our community. He was the President of the American Society of Safety Engineers, Utah Chapter from , and currently serves as an Executive Board Member of the Rocky Mountain Center for Occupational and Environmental Health at the University of Utah. He lives just outside of Heber City with his wife of 34 years and has two daughters and a growing crop of grandchildren.
20 MAL - GENERAL ASSIGNMENTS 2 OF 4 Ryan Payne, ASP I graduated with my bachelor s degree in environmental science from Brigham Young University and then completed my master s degree from the University of Utah in Occupational Health. I enjoy working in the environment, health and safety profession and have been doing so for about five years. I serve as the professional development focal for the Utah chapter. I enjoy the challenge and satisfaction that come while preparing for and completing the professional certifications available to us in the EHS profession and I hope to connect people who are interested in pursuing those certifications. Outside of work, my time with spent with my wife and our very active and fun-loving kids.
21 MAL - GENERAL ASSIGNMENTS 3 OF 4 Daniel Dilts, CSP Daniel Dilts began his career in environmental, health, and safety (EHS) at Honda Research and Development Americas in 2001 where he focused on improving and expanding the company s chemical safety and environmental compliance. He left Honda to serve a fulltime church service mission in September After returning home, he spent time in the business field and ran his own safety consulting company on the side. In 2013 he returned to the EHS field full-time, working for Hoyt Archery and later joining Berry Global. These positions gave Danny experience creating and implementing a number of safety programs at both local and corporate levels where he positively affected the organizations safety climate and culture. Danny currently works as the Corporate Safety Manager for Ultradent Products in South Jordan, UT where he leads a team of six other EHS professionals in developing and implementing a risk-based approach to safety for a growing multi-national operation. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from Western Governors University and a Master of Science degree in Environmental, Safety, and Health Management from the University of Findlay. In 2016, Danny passed the Certified Safety Professional (CSP) exam and became Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certified.
22 MAL - GENERAL ASSIGNMENTS 4 OF 4 Eric Johnson, MS, CSP EDUCATION: MASTER OF SCIENCE: Industrial Safety, University of Central Missouri formerly Central Missouri State University.
