1 Biographies Keynote speaker Carlson Tong, SBS, JP Chairman, Securities and Futures Commission Carlson Tong was appointed the Chairman of the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) by the HKSAR Chief Executive, effective 20 October Before taking up the chairmanship, he had served as a Non-Executive Director of the SFC since 1 April Mr Tong is a UK chartered accountant and a Hong Kong certified public accountant. He joined KPMG in the UK in 1979 and returned to Hong Kong in He was appointed the Chairman of KPMG in China and Hong Kong in 2007 and became the Asia Pacific Chairman and a member of the global board in He retired from KPMG in Since his retirement, Mr Tong has been active in public and community services. Currently he is a member of the Exchange Fund Advisory Committee of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, the Chairman of the Hong Kong Sports Institute Limited and a member of the Financial Services Professional Board, Malaysia. Prior to joining the SFC, Mr Tong had been actively involved in the regulatory work of the securities and futures markets. He served as a member of the Main Board and Growth Enterprise Market Listing Committee of The Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Limited from 2002 to 2006, and was its Chairman from 2004 to At the SFC, he was a member of the Takeovers and Mergers Panel from 2001 to 2009 and a member of the Dual Filing Advisory Group from 2002 to He was a Council Member of Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants from 2001 to 2008 and its Vice President in He was also a member of IFRS Advisory Council (formerly the Standards Advisory Council) of the International Accounting Standards Board in

2 Biographies Conference speakers Nova Chan Partner, PricewaterhouseCoopers Nova Chan leads the valuation practice in PwC China and has extensive experience in M&A advisory services in the Mainland. He was a member of the International Valuation Standards Council s standards board (2008 to 2012) and is currently a member of global and Asia business valuation committees for the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors. He was also a member of the valuation standards technical committee in China. He was involved in many research studies, notably on business valuation, intangible valuation and fair value measurements. He is a member of the Hong Kong Institute of CPAs, a fellow member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, and is the first and only non-mainland resident to have gained a Chinese certified public valuer title. Kumar Dasgupta Technical Director, International Accounting Standards Board Kumar Dasgupta is responsible for the financial instruments project at the IASB. Prior to joining the IASB he was the national partner responsible for treasury and financial instruments accounting for PriceWaterhouseCoopers in India. He is a Chartered Accountant. Ian Farrar Partner, PricewaterhouseCoopers Ian Farrar is the corporate treasury leader for PwC China/Hong Kong and a member of PwC s corporate treasury solutions team, developing practical guidance to assist clients with their treasury needs across the entire spectrum, from risk management strategy and treasury controls to helping clients improve their banking relationships and liquidity solutions. He represents Asia on PwC's corporate treasury technical committee, developing creative solutions to aid with the designation and documentation of effective hedges under IFRS. He also chairs PwC s hedge accounting working group. Outside PwC, he is a member of the financial reporting review panel of the Financial Reporting Council and was previously a member of the financial reporting standards committee of the Hong Kong Institute of CPAs. 2

3 James Fawls Head of Accounting Policy Asia Pacific, HSBC James Fawls started his career in the UK before moving to Hong Kong where he worked for two of the Big Four accounting firms and spent nine years as Director of Professional Standards at the Hong Kong Institute of CPAs. He has been working for HSBC in Hong Kong since He is closely involved with the implementation of new IFRS, including IFRS 9 Financial Instruments. Candy Fong Partner, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Candy Fong is a technical partner with over 12 years of professional experience in Hong Kong. She was seconded to the IASB as a practice fellow for two years from 2006 to She is also a member of Deloitte s global IFRS leadership team that develops IFRS accounting manual and publications used worldwide. She is a regular speaker on IFRS/HKFRS financial reporting matters in Hong Kong and overseas. She is a member of the financial reporting standards committee of the Hong Kong Institute of CPAs. Tommy Fung Partner, Ernst & Young Tommy Fung is EY's Asia Pacific IFRS leader and has over 30 years of experience in the accountancy profession, involving auditing, capital market transactions and accounting consulting. He is EY s deputy professional practice director for Asia Pacific and a member of EY's global IFRS policy committee. In between his careers in international accounting firms, he was deputy director (professional standards) of the Hong Kong Institute of CPAs and an accounting adviser to the China Securities Regulatory Commission. He is involved in the development of accounting and auditing standards in China and Hong Kong, and served in various committees and panels of the Institute, the Chinese Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Hong Kong stock exchange. Dennis Ho President, Hong Kong Institute of CPAs Dennis Ho is a partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers. He has over 20 years of extensive experience in providing assurance and transaction-related services, and in preparing companies for listing in Hong Kong and other major stock exchanges. He has been promoting the development of the accounting profession in Hong Kong and actively participates in various statutory and professional committees of the Hong Kong Institute of CPAs. He is the Institute's chairman of the audit profession reform working group and the nomination committee, and was the chairman of the auditing and assurance standards committee. He also serves on a number of committees and public interest bodies of the government of HKSAR and universities in Hong Kong. 3

4 Hans Hoogervorst Chairman, International Accounting Standards Board Hans Hoogervorst previously chaired the executive board of the Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets, the technical committee of the International Organization of Securities Commissions, and the Monitoring Board of the IFRS Foundation. He was appointed as a co-chair of the Financial Crisis Advisory Group, a high-level group of business leaders with international markets experience advising the IASB and the FASB on their response to the financial crisis. Between 1998 and 2007 he held a number of positions in the Dutch Government, including minister of finance, minister of health, welfare and sport, and state secretary for social affairs. Fanny Hsiang Director, Head of Technical & Training Department, BDO Fanny Hsiang is responsible for providing advisory services to the assurance practice at BDO Hong Kong. She is a member of BDO's international IFRS committee which is responsible for the formulation of worldwide policies of BDO International in relation to IFRS and other activities of the IASB. She is also a member of the IASB's SME implementation group, which aims to support the international adoption of IFRS for SMEs and to monitor the implementation of those standards. She is a member of the Hong Kong Institute of CPAs and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. Patrick Ip Principal, Investment and Head of Portfolio Supervision & Risk Management, China-ASEAN Investment Cooperation Fund Patrick joined China-ASEAN Investment Cooperation Fund in June, 2011 as its asset manager. Prior to that, he was the CFO of the private equity arm of the French bank, Natixis, in Asia; gained substantial experience in the alternative investment at a boutique asset management firm in Hong Kong; and was with PwC London and Hong Kong as an audit manager. He also served as a Legal and Regulatory Affairs Manager in the Legal division of the Wharf Group (listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange). He is the Chairman to the Hong Kong Private Equity Finance Association (HKPEFA). He is a CFA charterholder, a CPA, LLB and a FCCA. 4

5 Gary Kabureck Member, International Accounting Standards Board Gary Kabureck is a prominent and highly respected financial reporting practitioner. Since 2001, he was the chief accounting officer (and since 2003 as the corporate vice president) for Xerox Corporation. He had oversight of Xerox s accounting policy development, implementation of new accounting procedures, internal and external financial reporting, as well as internal controls. In addition, he has been an active member of Financial Executives International, a leading association for senior level finance executives, since He also served on a range of other advisory boards, including those of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board and the U.S. Financial Accounting Standards Board. He was inducted into the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants Hall of Fame in Kelly Kong Group Financial Controller, Jardine Matheson Limited Kelly Kong joined Jardine Matheson Group in 1993 after spending over six years with Price Waterhouse in Hong Kong. During her 20 years with Jardine Matheson Group, Kelly has held various positions within the Group, including working as finance director in a couple of operating companies where she was actively involved in business strategy formulation, process re-engineering, and risk management. She is a member of the Hong Kong Institute of CPAs and currently serves as a member of the Institute's financial reporting standards committee. Steven Lim Partner, PricewaterhouseCoopers Steven Lim is a partner in PwC s South East Asian Consulting practice responsible for leading financial risk management. Over his 20-year career in the financial services sector he has advised banks and insurance companies in both Asia and Australia on various risk-related matters, include credit risk provisioning, both under IAS 39 and IFRS 9. He has worked with all of the top Australian banks on various aspects of their expected credit loss model development, including their development of lifetime expected credit loss models, as mandated under APRA Prudential Standard 220. He has also advised banks in Australasia on how to adapt their Basel II models for IFRS 9 purposes. 5

6 Sue Lloyd Member, International Accounting Standards Board Sue Lloyd served as a senior director of technical activities for the IASB prior to her appointment as an IASB member in She was responsible for leading the technical staff in the development of new IFRSs. Prior to this role, she served as the IASB s director of capital markets, with responsibility for the IASB s work to reform the accounting for financial instruments. She worked for the IASB between 2002 and 2004, as a project manager for the consolidation and leases project. Between leaving the IASB in 2004 and re-joining in 2009, she held various senior positions in investment banking for JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs. She is also a former member of the Australian Accounting Standards Board. Ian Mackintosh Vice Chairman, International Accounting Standards Board Ian Mackintosh previously chaired the United Kingdom Accounting Standards Board from 2004 to In November 2000, he was appointed chief accountant of the Australian Securities and Investment Commission and following that was managing the financial management of south Asia at the World Bank. He has played an active role in standard-setting since He was a member, and later deputy chairman, of the Australian Accounting Standards Board and chaired its urgent issues group. He has substantial public sector experience, having chaired both the Australian Public Sector Accounting Standards Board and the International Federation of Accountants Public Sector Committee. Michael Monteforte Director, KPMG Michael Monteforte leads the financial risk management practice for KPMG in Hong Kong and has extensive experience with credit risk. He leads various teams with his experience in Basel II and III and deep expertise in Credit and also is one of the leading experts on IFRS 9 implementation. He was formerly with the Bank of New York in New York where he worked on the foreign exchange desk as an analyst and helped streamline the Straight Through Processing (STP) system. Prior to Bank of New York he also worked for Banca Intesa (NY) within the risk management group where he managed the foreign exchange accounting and settlement process for foreign exchange related products. He is a certified Financial Risk Manager (FRM ) from GARP and he is also fluent in Mandarin Chinese. 6

7 Catherine Morley Partner, KPMG As the partner in charge of KPMG China's department of professional practice, Catherine Morley is responsible for leading the team of professionals who support the firm and its clients on financial reporting and auditing issues. She qualified as a chartered accountant with KPMG in the U.K. and has been closely involved with the changing environment of Hong Kong financial reporting since first coming to Hong Kong in She is currently chairman of the financial reporting standards committee and a member of the professional standards monitoring expert panel of the Hong Kong Institute of CPAs. Francesco Nagari Partner, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Based in Hong Kong since 2014 where he continues in his global role for Deloitte, Francesco Nagari has also assumed Asia-Pacific regional client service leadership responsibilities for some of Deloitte's largest global insurance clients. He is an expert on insurance reporting, solvency, and risk management issues across several jurisdictions gained in over 22 years of work in Europe and Asia. He has advised the European Union and other institutions on financial reporting issues affecting the insurance sector. He is a member of the insurance regulatory liaison group of the Hong Kong Institute of CPAs. Jon Nielsen Regional Chief Financial Officer, AIA Group Limited Jon Nielsen is responsible for overseeing the group s finance and accounting activities, including financial reporting, systems and operations, treasury and tax. He has more than 19 years of experience in the finance and accounting profession. His previous experience includes working for AIG, the Allianz Group, and Deloitte & Touche. He is a certified public accountant. John O Grady Partner, Ernst & Young John O'Grady is a partner in the Melbourne (Australia) office where he is based, with over 30 years experience in audit and accounting services. He is responsible for the assurance quality function in Asia Pacific including technical audit and accounting consultations, reviews of capital markets transactions, design and deployment of audit quality initiatives, and oversight of internal quality reviews and external audit inspections. He is also a member of EY s global IFRS policy committee, responsible for the firm s interpretations and positions on IFRS. He is a former member and deputy chair of the Australian Accounting Standards Board ( ) and is currently a member of the IFRS interpretations committee. He is a fellow of the institutes of chartered accountants in Australia and in Ireland. 7

8 Steve Ong Senior Vice President, Head of Accounting Affairs, Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited Steve Ong is a fellow of the Hong Kong Institute of CPAs and the ICAEW with over 25 years of experience in the accounting profession. He is the head of accounting affairs at the listing division responsible for accounting and auditing matters, including the Exchange s financial statements review program. He is also a member of the Institute's financial reporting standards committee, the auditing and assurance standards committee and its sustainability and integrated reporting advisory group. He is also involved with Institute s Best Corporate Governance Disclosure Awards and The Hong Kong Management Association Best Annual Reports Awards as a member of the judging panels. He is a regular speaker at events on the Exchange s financial statements review program relating to accounting and disclosure of financial information in listing rules. Paul Pacter Former Member, International Accounting Standards Board Paul Pacter was a member of the IASB from 2010 to 2012 and is consultant to the IASB on assessing the progress of IFRS adoption in individual jurisdictions around the world. Prior to serving on the IASB, he was a director in the global IFRS office of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu in Hong Kong and the director of standards for small and medium-sized entities at the IASB concurrently from 2003 to Previously, Paul worked for the IASB s predecessor, the International Accounting Standards Committee, in London from Prior to that, he worked for the U.S. Financial Accounting Standards Board for 16 years, and was commissioner of finance of the city of Stamford, Connecticut for seven years. Henry Rees Technical Director, International Accounting Standards Board Henry Rees is a technical director at the IASB. In this role, he is responsible for overseeing a number of technical projects and he has been closely involved in the development of the new revenue recognition standard. Before joining the IASB in 2003, he spent 12 years in KPMG s United Kingdom audit practice. He is an English chartered accountant. 8

9 Katherine Schipper Professor, Fuqua School of Business, Duke University Katherine Schipper is the Thomas Keller Professor of Business Administration at Duke University s Fuqua School of Business. Prior to joining Duke University s faculty, she was a Board member of the Financial Accounting Standards Board and was a faculty member at Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Chicago. She has published research papers in financial reporting, corporation finance and corporate governance. She has been named the American Accounting Association s Outstanding Educator and Distinguished International Lecturer, and has been elected to the Accounting Hall of Fame. She has served the American Accounting Association as Director of Research, as President and as President of the Financial Accounting and Reporting Section. She is currently the President of the International Association for Accounting Education and Research and has been member of the governing boards of two public companies, a mutual fund and a not-for-profit entity. Darrel Scott Member, International Accounting Standards Board Darrel Scott became a member of the IASB in October 2010, having previously been a member of the IASB's IFRS interpretations committee and a member of the IFRS Foundation's standards advisory council (now called the IFRS advisory council). Prior to joining the IASB, he was chief financial officer of the FirstRand Banking Group, one of the largest financial institutions in South Africa. He had responsibility for both financial and regulatory reporting under IFRS and the Basel II accords. He is chairman of the IASB s SME implementation group. Brett Shadbolt Chief Executive Officer, Censere Group Brett Shadbolt is the founder of Censere Group. He has more than 25 years of intellectually property (IP) valuation and business advisory experience. He is a professional member of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, a registered business valuer (HK) and a member of the HK Securities Institute. He is currently a member of the valuation for financial reporting working group of the Hong Kong Institute of CPAs and a member of the Asia Board for the Royal Institute of Surveyors. He was also previously a member of the IP sub-committee 1 of the Ministry of Law, Singapore. Hugh Shields Executive Technical Director, International Accounting Standards Board Hugh Shields joined the IASB in 2014 as the executive technical director and leads the IASB s technical staff. He previously held senior positions both in banking and public accounting practice. He has extensive experience in the application of IFRS, having held senior technical accounting and financial reporting roles across Asia, Europe, Africa, the Middle East and the Americas. He has also served as a member of various advisory bodies to the Fédération des Experts-comptables Européens and the European Financial Reporting Advisory Group. Hugh qualified with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland in 1990 and is also professionally qualified as a corporate treasurer. 9

10 Shelley So Partner, PricewaterhouseCoopers Shelley So is a partner with PwC s capital market accounting advisory service. She advises PwC teams and clients on complex IFRS accounting and financial reporting issues, capital transactions, restructuring and mergers and acquisitions. Her specialization includes revenue, acquisition and divestitures, impairment and consolidation. She is a reviewer of PwC s key global accounting technical publications and a regular speaker on IFRS-related events. She was seconded to PwC London and the IASB as a practice fellow from 2005 to Prior to that she was an assurance partner in Beijing where she worked for 10 years. She is the vice chairman of financial reporting standards committee of the Hong Kong Institute of CPAs. Chungwoo Suh Member, International Accounting Standards Board Chungwoo Suh joined the IASB in 2012 as a board member. He served as a chairman of the Korea Accounting Standards Board (KASB) from 2008 to 2011, during which he actively participated in South Korea's preparations to adopt IFRS. He was deputy chairman of the KASB and chaired its Interpretations Committee. He has been a professor of accounting at Kookmin University, Seoul and worked at Samil Accounting Firm. He is a certified public accountant in South Korea. Stephen Taylor Partner, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Stephen Taylor is a senior partner in the national audit and assurance technical department of Deloitte China and head of the Deloitte Asia Pacific IFRS centre of excellence based in Hong Kong. He is currently deputy chairman of the Hong Kong stock exchange listing committee and a fellow of the Hong Kong Institute of CPAs, where he is also a member of the professional standards monitoring expert panel and its sustainability and integrated reporting advisory group. He is a member of the IFRS advisory council, an honorary advisor to the Financial Reporting Council and a member of its oversight and operations committee. He is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Australia. 10

11 Peter Telders Partner, Ernst & Young Peter Telders is a partner at EY Hong Kong with nearly 20 years of experience in audit and advisory services to clients in the insurance industry, ranging from life & health to general insurance and reinsurance. He currently leads the financial accounting advisory practice in EY Hong Kong, assisting companies in the financial services industry implement transformational accounting changes and financial reporting related matters, with a particular interest in IFRS 4 Insurance Contracts. Coming from Europe, he also has experience with Solvency II and Market Consistent Embedded Value (MCEV). Combining knowledge of finance and actuarial, he understands the technical and practical issues insurers will face when implementing IFRS 4 Phase II. Michael Wells Director, IFRS Education Initiative, International Accounting Standards Board Michael Wells leads the education initiative of the IFRS Foundation. He qualified as a South African chartered accountant with Ernst & Young before being seconded to work out of the firm's Detroit office. He subsequently joined the academic world and became associate professor responsible for the financial accounting section of a South African university. He also served as an independent evaluator of professional qualifying examinations. He is a member of a number of international accountancy education advisory groups. Kelvin Wong Executive Director and Deputy Managing Director, COSCO Pacific Limited In addition to his roles in COSCO, Kelvin Wong is a non-executive director of the Securities and Futures Commission, a convenor-cum-member of the financial reporting review panel, the immediate past chairman of the Hong Kong Institute of Directors ( ) and a former member of the main board and GEM listing committee of the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong ( ). He is also an independent non-executive director of four listed companies in Hong Kong. Kim Man Wong Chief Financial Officer, Hong Kong Electric Investments Kim Man Wong has over 25 years of extensive experience in financial management and accounting. He is a member of the Hong Kong Institute of CPAs and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He is currently a Council member of the Institute. 11

12 Kazuo Yuasa Corporate Executive Officer and Vice Head of Corporate Finance Unit, Fujitsu Limited Kazuo Yuasa has wide experience in financial reporting practices in the US and in Japan, and accordingly, leads the Company s global implementation of IFRS. He is currently responsible for the Company s financing as well as the Group's finance policy and procedures. He has been serving various national and international committees relating to financial reporting, including the IFRS Interpretations Committee (until June 2015) and the IASB and FASB's joint Transition Resource Group for Revenue Recognition (TRG, current). 12
