7 My career path developed quite naturally. The opportunity to be a part of a small team of the highly renowned dispute resolution practice in Germany led me to Skadden. In 2007, I spent a year abroad, studying at the University of Singapore. My time there not only sparked my love for South East Asia but also my fascination with international arbitration. After my year in Singapore, I participated in the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot in Vienna, as a student and coach. I gained further insights into the world of arbitration at international law firms, as an intern, research assistant and referendar in Frankfurt, London and New York. I joined Skadden in 2015 as a third-year associate, becoming the third member of the newly established team under Anke Sessler s lead in Frankfurt. Since then, our team has grown, as has my experience in the field, and I m as passionate about arbitration as ever. In disputes, each matter is unique. With each case, I learn something new. I ve studied how oil fields function, how cars are assembled and how stocks can be traded to receive tax vouchers for taxes that are never paid. I really enjoy exploring the facts and working on presenting them in a way that best represents our clients interests. I ve been given the opportunity to take a very active role in some groundbreaking cases, including defending the biggest claim (approximately 1 billion) ever brought under the rules of the German Institution of Arbitration and representing a European state in proceedings in Stockholm initiated by Russian investors both before some of the most renowned international arbitrators and suing the former members of the board of a German bank before the court in Munich. What started off as a mere fascination has turned into a rewarding career. I m excited to be in the position to share my enthusiasm for this field when working with our interns, research assistants and referendars. I ve been given the opportunity to take a very active role in some groundbreaking cases.

8 OpPortunities in Germany Internships 4-6 weeks Research Assistants After the First State Exam Carve Your Path With Skadden Research Assistants Before the First State Exam Referendars, ResearCH Assistants and Legal Interns Unlike at other firms, referendars, research assistants and legal interns are integrated into our team from day one and are encouraged to attend the majority of our attorney training sessions. In addition, you will be assigned to an attorney mentor who coordinates work and provides meaningful feedback. We offer flexible work schedules that can be adapted to individual needs, such as part-time or interlocked models for referendars and doctoral candidates. Referendars who have successfully completed their Anwaltsstation in one of our German offices may have the opportunity to fulfill the Wahlstation abroad in another Skadden office such as New York, Hong Kong or London. Legal interns complete their obligatory four- to six-week internship in either our Frankfurt or Munich office. Interns generally are welcome to join our associates for conference calls, notarial certifications and internal meetings. New AssOCiate Training and Retreat Shortly after joining the firm, new associates in Europe attend an orientation retreat in New York. Prior to the retreat, associates complete an internal finance course that provides practical business training not generally offered in law school. I first connected with Skadden during an M&A workshop in 2014 the firm held at the University of Bayreuth, where I was working on my doctoral thesis ( Re-Introduction of Wealth Tax in Germany Limitations for Legislator, Importance and Structure Options for Family Enterprises ). The next year, I moved to Frankfurt to start my legal clerkship (Referendariat). A colleague of mine from the university (who is now a Skadden third-year associate) highly recommended Skadden s tax practice and its leader, Johannes Frey. I lined up an interview, and the in-depth, candid and even entertaining conversation convinced me that the challenging atmosphere would be a great fit for me as a tax research assistant. From day one, I was working on major transactions and developing skills I could also utilize for my second state exam preparation. Skadden encourages research assistants and referendars to take on significant responsibilities to jump in at the deep end. This allows you to see things from both an attorney s and our clients perspectives, and to quickly gain valuable experience. It was a great opportunity to learn more about the international capabilities Skadden offers and to meet many of the attorneys I now work with on various cross-border matters. 13 the most exciting stage of my career has just begun. Ever since I was a child, I d wanted to be a lawyer. It s been an adventurous journey, from growing up in a small German village to working for one of the world s leading law firms, and the most exciting stage of my career has just begun. After law school, I lived in China for two years. While studying the language and teaching German law to Chinese law students, I decided I wanted to work at a firm with a truly global perspective on practicing law, where the interconnectedness of 21st Century business realities were reflected in the firm s culture. Since joining Skadden s renowned corporate governance practice, I ve advised clients who rank among the leading companies in the world. I ve spent days at their headquarters, studying the client s internal structure and organization, prepared board presentations, and led Q&As with managers twice my age. Though the learning curve has been steep, it has been extremely gratifying to feel myself growing more knowledgeable and confident with each day. Unlike most other Skadden offices, the Munich office is relatively small a group of governance and corporate lawyers work on a single floor. This makes for a unique situation, as we have an intimate office culture while being part of Skadden s global, state-of-the-art organization. We know everyone in the office on a first-name basis, celebrate everyone s birthday and have lunch together on a regular basis our yearly visit to the Oktoberfest feels like an evening with good friends, and reminds us that we can rely on one another in challenging moments. I can safely say that my childhood instincts have been validated. Being a lawyer might not be quite like what I imagined when I was a kid, but it s pretty great nonetheless. Though the learning curve has been steep, it has been extremely gratifying to feel myself growing more knowledgeable and confident with each day.

15 Practice Groups Banking and Finance Skadden s Banking Group represents lenders and borrowers in some of the largest and most complex European financing transactions. From the deal structuring and the commitment stage to closing, our attorneys in Germany frequently advise on multijurisdictional transactions that comprise both European and U.S. law. We advise on all types of financing transactions, including first and second lien loan facilities; senior and subordinated bridge financings and other acquisition-related financings; leveraged recapitalization financings; asset-backed financings; mezzanine financings; workouts, restructurings, DIP and exit financings; lease financings; and investment grade financings. Mergers and Acquisitions M&A is one of Skadden s core areas of activity in Germany, with a focus on complex, multijurisdictional transactions and local domestic work. We have substantial experience structuring and executing challenging transactions throughout the region.
