1 Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of Florida December 2017 MYLES STANDISH COLONY NEWS JANUARY WINTER MEETING Mayflower Descendants who were Massachusetts Loyalists WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 10, 2018, 11:30 AM Auditorium at Moorings Park, 120 Moorings Park Drive, Naples, Florida (Located off Goodlette- Frank Road, south of Pine Ridge Road.) January Presentation At our January meeting, Myles Standish member, Ann Lambert Kremer will present her research on Mayflower descendants who were Loyalists As a Massachusetts native, Ann knew she descended from William White and Edward Doty on her maternal grandfather s side. Only recently did she realize that she also descended from four other Pilgrims on her maternal grandmother s side and these ancestors were Loyalists who were banished from Massachusetts to maritime Canada in This presentation will highlight Loyalist Mayflower descendants; Edward Winslow (Edward Winslow), George Leonard (Thomas Rogers), and Samuel Perry (William Brewster). 2 GOVERNOR S MESSAGE: DEAR FELLOW MYLES STANDISH MEMBERS: It is hard to believe that Thanksgiving has come and gone and that Christmas is right around the corner. At this time of year, days seem to fly by. Summer for me was a very busy affair. I alternate my time between my grandsons and my genealogical research in Plymouth. No small feat when you have a 3 and a 5-year-old vying for your attention. Fall came in with a bang along with the Triennial Congress held in Plymouth, September The highlight for me was when my grandson William (age 5) agreed to walk with me dressed as a Pilgrim boy during the Pilgrim s march. Joseph, (age 3), abstained. A new slate of officers has been sworn in. You can check them out on the GSMD web site. I wish Dr. George Garmany the best of luck in his position as Governor General of GSMD. It was while Congress was in session that Irma paid a visit to our lovely town of Naples. During breaks, you could see the Florida delegates checking their s for any news from home. My fervent wish is that no one suffered too much from this terrible storm. We had some minor damage to our home but are thankful as it could have been much worse. My prayers are with those that suffered and are suffering still. Just one week after I was sworn in as the Myles Standish Colony Governor, it was my honor to be asked to swear-in the new officers of our neighbors, Sampson Colony in Fort Myers. Our long-time friend Ren Cushing is the new Governor of that colony and I wish him and the other new board members the very best of luck in their new positions. I, along with Fran Lopus, attended the Florida Sate Meeting held at the Villages on the weekend of November 17 th. It was wonderful to greet longtime friends and to see some new faces. The highlight of this event for me was the speaker, Dr. Richard Pickering, director of Plimouth Plantation. He did strip tease by removing his 21 st century clothing and donning the clothing of the 17 th century. Eventually becoming Isaac Allerton who chose to speak to us on his last day at the Plimouth Colony. It was indeed a moving presentation. Barry and I had a wonderful Thanksgiving with our dear friends/cousins and past State Governor Ken Carter and his wife Kathleen. The Carters were able to stay for several days which was a treat for us, since in the past they have only breezed in and out for a Myles Standish luncheon. I am looking forward to serving as your Governor of the Myles Standish Colony and I will do my best to meet your expectations. Nancy Ratner

3 NEW OFFICERS: NOVEMBER 2017-NOVEMBER 2020 Meet our new officers Colony Governor, Nancy Ratner: Nancy joined GSMD and Myles Standish Colony in 2013 after moving to Naples form Massachusetts. Nancy has proven lines to William Bradford, William Brewster, Stephen Hopkins and Richard Warren. She also has unproven lines to Edward Doty and Thomas Rogers. A Massachusetts native, Nancy married her husband Barry in 1975 and together they have two children and two young grandsons who are already enrolled in the Myles Standish Junior membership program. Nancy has a long history as very capable business woman. She opened a travel agency in 1977 and operated it until her retirement in Nancy and Barry spend their summers in Lakeville, Massachusetts where they enjoy quality time with family. eastontravel@hotmail.com Colony Vice Governor, Mike Garey: Mike served in the Air Force 1966 through After the service he worked for Detroit Bank and Trust (now Comerica) and held the title of Vice President in charge of Trust Operations. After retiring from banking, he obtained a culinary degree, studying for a short time in Paris, France. Currently, he is the immediate past president of the Sons of the American Revolution, Managing Director of the Florida State Endowment Trust Fund, and is on the Infrastructure Committee at Vanderbilt Gulfside condominiums. mgarey@reagon.com

4 Recording Secretary, Pat Ricci: Pat Ricci, née Leister, began her interest in genealogy after a family middle name of Alden emerged after some research for a class. After many years, and many dead ends, traveling to Cemeteries, historical societies, state archives, genealogical libraries, from NJ, PA, & Maine, the connection to John Alden was made, then later to William Brewster. Born in Philadelphia, raised in Southern NJ, she enjoyed working in the printing industry for many years before moving to Naples with her husband, Mark. budino@verizon.net Corresponding Secretary, Ann Kremer: Ann thanks member Ginny Bailey for inspiring her to be a Mayflower Society member. After a chance introduction to Ginny in Naples in 2013, Ginny was adamant that Ann attend the next Myles Standish Colony meeting. Ann s first applications to prove William White and Edward Doty were rather simple since her uncle had an approved application. Future applications for William Brewster (proven), Stephen Hopkins (pending), Richard Warren and Francis Cooke have been more challenging as her ancestors in these lines were Loyalists who were banished from Massachusetts to Nova Scotia A Southborough, MA native and a practicing occupational therapist, Ann and her husband Steve now reside in Bonita Springs and summer on a small rural island (Long Island) near Portland, Maine. 5 Treasurer, Cynthia Lyster: aka Cindy Cook Lyster. Cindy is fifth generation Missourian. Her family came to Missouri in the mid 1800 s, mostly from VA, TN, KY and settled in middle Missouri. Cindy grew up in Kansas City, MO, attended National College for one year then married her high school sweetheart Mike who was serving our country in the USN. Her ancestor is William Brewster and she is waiting on approval for Stephen Hopkins from her my maternal side. Her father s family is still a mystery. Cindy has been a DAR member for over 40 years. She and her husband Mike, an Alden descendent, have 2 sons and 3 grandchildren. cclyster@comcast.net Elder, Beverly Duncan: Bev was born in New Jersey, but for most of her childhood lived in New England in Maine and on Cape Cod. In 1992 she graduated from Harvard Divinity School and is now a retired minister in the Massachusetts Conference, United Church of Christ. She retired from Pilgrim Church, UCC in Duxbury in Duxbury is also where her ancestor, Elder William Brewster, had his homestead. In 2009, she moved to Naples to be near the families of her two daughters and two grandchildren. Her son remains in Weymouth, MA. and works in Boston. After her arrival in Naples and joining the Naples United Church of Christ, she was asked to become part of the staff as Assistant Minister. Using family records originally researched by her maternal grandmother and continued by her mother and cousin, Bev's older brother and that cousin are now members of the Society of Mayflower Descendants in Virginia. 6 Captain, Harvey Clonklin Hilton: Harvey s hometown is East Hampton, CT. Before retiring, Harvey spent 35+ years working in the IT industry with his last 17 years at Fidelity Investments in Boston and NYC. Currently a Naples "snowbird", he summers in Clinton, CT. He is a proven descendant of from William White. His hobbies include genealogy, tennis, snow skiing out West, and travelling to new places. His 4 grandchildren are his joy! Harvey.hilton@gmail.com Director, Don Cahill: Don is our past Colony Governor, He was admitted as a member to the FSMD in February His Mayflower ancestor is William Brewster. He, along with his son and wife operate his business, Don Cahill Architect-Builder. Don has been "building" the Naples community with his business since dcahillachitect@gmail.com Director, Fran Lopus: Fran has been an active and impressive member of the Descendants of the Mayflower Society for 42 years. She has the honor of being the past Myles Standish Colony Governor, and Past Secretary as well as the Past Florida State Governor, past AG & AGG. Fran is also a Member of the DAR & Daughters of the American Colonists. Professionally, she sold World Book Encyclopedias for 25 years and is a retired Real Estate Broker. She is widowed, has 3 children & 4 grandchildren. Originally from Pennsylvania, she was active in her church, the Pa. Federated Women's Club & Wesbury Retirement Community. Her hobbies are Bridge, reading & needlepoint.

7 The Myles Standish Colony invites you to attend our next meeting and luncheon on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at the Auditorium at Moorings Park. We will start at 11:30 AM with a social half hour. Guests and prospective members are always welcome to attend our meetings. Menu includes pumpkin soup, sliced pork loin, roasted vegetables and warm apple tart. Reservations for the luncheon are required and must be cancelled by Friday, January 5, 2018 to avoid charges. $25 per person, all inclusive. (Special meal requests are $5 extra.)

8 MAYFLOWER PILGRIM THROW At our next meeting, do not forget to purchase your raffle tickets for the beautiful Mayflower throw. Proceeds go toward the purchase of new Silver Books for the use of our colony s Historian when assisting prospective members as well as our members working on supplemental applications. Tickets are $1 each. Myles Standish Colony is developing a Facebook page. We should be up and running soon. Check us out.
