The report indicated that Ballarat had established an industry benchmark in relation to the integration of effort and outputs between industry, the University, local and State Government. As a result of the impending changes to TAFE operations at the Lydiard Street Campus, the intention is to now utilise the Brewery Building as an extension of the. Tech Park expansion at Mt Helen The University has made significant progress on the planned expansion of the at Mt Helen. In May of this year the State Minister for Planning, the Hon. Matthew Guy MLC approved the rezoning of the 22 hectares of land between the Mt Helen Campus and the existing Park, from Public Use to Business 2. Since that announcement the University has been focused on creating a Development Plan, as the precursor to an application for a Planning Permit, and investment in infrastructure and services. The following subdivisional plan provides an insight into how the University intends to develop the site. The University has applied to the State Government for funding to assist with the internal refurbishment of the building. The intention is to provide quality space for technology based start ups, established enterprises as well as an area for co-working and hot desks. It is anticipated that the building works will be undertaken in the first half of 2013 with the building available for lease from July 1, The 2400m 2 building is expected to ultimately create another 220 jobs in the Ballarat CBD and enliven the southern perimeter of the city. Hill PDA (independent property consultants) has examined the potential economic impacts of the Park expansion. Hill PDA contend that the Park expansion will generate another 1600 jobs, provide an additional $131 per annum in household income and $420 million in the value of economic outputs. Hence the expansion is central to the future economic and social vibrancy of the region. The University has completed a submission to the State Government for funding from the Regional Growth Fund in connection with the establishment of roads and services within the new Park precinct.

With an initial setting in South Melbourne, the firm has now opened a regional office at the and has established this as their centre of operations. This is not too surprising as Ballarat is Andrew s home town and UB is where he studied chemistry before making the move into IP. The firm practices exclusively in the fields of patents, trademarks and designs, specialising in the preparation, prosecution and enforcement of these forms of IP in Australia and New Zealand, and also on the global stage. Although modest in terms of size (at the moment), the firm already boasts a very impressive client list. Domestically, they are working with the likes of CSIRO and the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), a spin-off from ANSTO recently selecting DARK IP as their agent for global protection of their innovations. 4 New Regional Lead, IBM Global Business Services Steve Davies Steve Davies began working at the IBM Regional Software Solutions Centre (RSSC) in March this year after being appointed the Application Management Services lead for the Ballarat Region delivering services to several large Australian corporations. Steve emigrated with his wife Dee to Australia in the late 1980s after graduating in the UK with a BSc (Honours) in Computer Systems Engineering. They settled in Woodend in the Macedon Ranges and have two sons; Samuel (20) and Matthew (17). Steve s professional career has been focused on the development, enhancement and support of real-time control, communications and business critical applications across a number of industries including defence, telecommunications, utilities, mining and oil & gas. In 2010 Steve lead IBM s Application Management Services organisation in Western Australia being responsible for creating a sustainable services delivery capability and last year lead the IBM team delivering the Fulfilment & Logical Network Inventory platform, one of the key components in the National Broadband Network Corporation s Operational Support Systems. While IBM already has a very strong relationship with the, Steve is working to see his own group become more actively involved. GBS operations in Ballarat is looking to double in size over the next 18 months and the University will be a key source of skilled practitioners for the new roles being created. IBM is also planning to run another EX.I.T.E camp in Ballarat in 2013 to encourage more young girls to consider a career in ICT. Outside of work Steve s current hobby is running which he started 18 months ago. Initially just running around the block Steve now regularly runs between 6 and 9 km with the odd 21 km thrown in for good measure.
