(P 0 BOX LOS ANGELES 45 CALIF) KEY PERSONNEL Over two hundred of the key scientists and engineers in the nation devoted many months to the project which has culminated in the Pioneer V space probe. Members of the staff of Space TeOhnology Laboratories, Inc., they provided the overall systems engineering and technical direction for both vehicle a2d payload. These senior personnel are also responsible for the operation of the world -wide tracking and communication network; the research and development of components and subsystems used for both launch control and tracking equipment; and the hardware and development of the second, third and satellite stages of the vehicle. Space Technology Laboratories, Inc., was led in this endeavor by its President, Dr. Louis G. Dunn. Dr. Dunn received his B, S. and M. S. degrees in mechanical engineering from the California Institute of Technology. It was from there that he also received his Ph. D. in aeronautics and mathematics. Prior to becoming president of STL, he was the Director of Jet Propulsion Laboratory as well as being the initial Vice President and Director of the Guided Missile Research Division of the Ramo-Wooldridge Corporation,
2 - 2 - Dr. Dunn has over twenty years' experience in aerodynamics, structures, jet propulsion, and guided missile research. He is the author of numerous technical papers; co-author of "Airplane Design and Structure. " He is a Fellow of the Institute of the Aeronautical Sciences, the American Rocket Society, and member of Sigma Xi. For his work on torpedoes during World War 11, he received the Presidential Medal of Merit and, recently, he was presented the Patriotic Civilian Service Award for research and development work carried on for the Army. Principal STL personnel involved in the development of the Pioneer V lunar satellite program are: DR. RUBEN F. METTLER --- Executive Vice President, Senior Project Advisor Dr. Mettler received his B. S., M. 3. and Ph. D. degrees in electrical and aeronautical engineering at the California Institute of Technology. He presently serves on a special committee of the Air Force Scientific Advisory.- Board and has served as a special consultant to the Assistant Secretary of Defense. In 1954 he was the recipient of the Eta Kappa Nu award for the nation's Most Outstanding Young Electrical Engineer and was named among the ten outstanding young men of America by the National Junior Chamber of Commerce in DR. GEORGE E. MUELLER --- Vice President and Associate Director of Research and Development Division Dr. Mueller received his B. S. degree at the Missouri School of Mines, his M. S. degree in electrical engineering at Purdue University, and his Ph. D. degree in physics at Ohio State University. - more -
3 ~ For more than 10 years he served as professor of electrical engineering at Ohio State and has patents in the electron tube and antenna fields DR. ADOLF K. THIEL --- STL Director of Advanced Experimental Space Missions Pioneer V Project Director. A member of the German missile team that developed the famous V-2 rocket. Dr. Thiel received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees at the Institute of Technology, Darms tadt, Germany. He has served as principal advisor to the Army Ordnance Corps on technical matters of missile systems planning development and is a former member of the Army Ordnance Guided Missile Advisory and Evaluation Committee. Dr. Thiel was STL Project Director for the Thor IRBM which became operational recently, and the highly successful Explorer VI satellite program. Othor STL key personnel and areas of responsibility include: PAUL GT CTTR --- Project Enginee r A member of the Technical Staff, Experimental Space Missions, Director ' s office. / Glaser received his B. E. E., 1949, ana.-is M. E. E., 1953, from New York University. Prior to joining STL in March, 1958, he was Director of Engineering for Cruen Industries, Inc. From 1949 to 1955, he was vice president and chief engineer of American Chronoscope Corporation. Glaser is a member of the Institute of Radio Engineers, American Institute of Electrical Engineers, Tau Beta Pi and Eta Kappa Nu. - more -

DE LAUER --- Vehicle Engineer... - Director of the Vehicle Development Laboratory, Research and Development Division, Dr. De Lauer has 19 years' experience in aeronautical engineering. An engineering graduate of Stanford University, Dr. De Lauer received his B. S. in aeronautics at the U. S. Naval Postgraduate School. Later, he received his A. E. degree in aerodynamics and Ph. D. in aeronautics and mathematics at the California Institute of Technology. Co -author of "Nuclear Rocket Propulsion, I' McGraw -Hill 1958, Dr, l)e Lauer is an associate Fellow of the Institute of Aeronautical Sciences. GEORGE J. GLEGHORN --- Second Stage Engineer Manager of the Controls and Simulation Department, Electro - meciranical Laboratory, Research and Development Division. Dr. Gleghorn received his B. S., M. S. and Ph. D. in electrical engineering at the University of Colorado. A member of STL's Senior Staff, Dr. Gleghorn has 12 years' experience in analog computing simulation, digital computer logic and design, anu analysis of sampled data control systems. We is a member of the Institute of Radio Engineers, Association for Computing Machinery, Tau Beta Pi, Eta Kappa Nu and Sigma Xi. CHARLES P. SONETT STL Experimental Engineer Head of Space Physics Section, Guidance Research Laboratory, Research and Development Division. Dr. Sonett received his B. A. and M.A. in physics at the University of California, Berkeley, and his Ph. D. in nuclear physics at UCLA.
5 -5 - A member of STLIs Senior Staff, Dr. Sonett has over eight years of experience in experimental nuclear physics, proton -proton scattering, millimicrosecond pulse techniques, and associate areas of science. Dr, So:iett is a member of the American Physical Society, the American Institute of Physics, the Optical Society of America, the Institute of Radio Engineers and Sigma Xi. JOHN E. TABER --- Payload Engineer Associate Manager of Instrumentation Department, Telecommuni - cations Laboratory, Research and Development Division. Taber received his B.S. at the California Institute of Technology and his M. S. in electrical engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. He has 13 years' experience in telemetering system and component i. evelopment, environmental testing of aircraft electric components, and network development. He is a member of the Institute of Radio Engineers. HENRY A. SAMULON --- Guidance Engineer and Deve lo pm ent Division. Associate Director, Guidance Research Laboratory, Research Samulon received his Diplom Ingenieur (M.S. degree) in communications from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich, Switzerland. Samulon has 20 years' experience in acoustical transients, special instrumentation for acoustical measurements, communications, noise and detection, systems analysis, network problems, and electronic counter - measures,

RICHARD C. SOOTON, JR. --- Navigation Xngineer Manager, Guidance anu Navigation Department, Research anu D eve lopm ent Division. am: the M.S. Dr. E3ooton receiveu his B, 5. degree in electrical engineering degree in mathematics at the Mechanical College of Texas. 2Fe received his Sc.D. uegree in electrical engineering at the Massachusetts Dr. Booton hau hau 11 years' experience in missile guiuance and control, servomechanism and computation theory, and statistical communicirtion theory. His current research activities include the optimization of nonlinear control systems and the systems analysis of computation and control problem ti peculiar to ballistic mis rrile control, ARNOLD _1 ROSENBLOOM Computer and Trajectory Engineer Manager of the Computer and Guiuance Department, Telecommunications Laboratory, Re search and Development Division, Dr. Rosenbloom holds a B. S. degree in electrical engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology; an M.S. degree in electrical engineering from Stanford University; a Ph. D. degree in engineering from ' UCLA. Dr. Rosenbloom is a member of the Institute of Radio Zngineers, Tau Beta Pi, Eta Kappa Nu, Pi Mu Epsilon and Sigma Xi.
7 -7 - B. A. BUNCH --- Able Field Fngineer Amember of the technical staff, Research and Development Division, Bunch is STL Able Field Engineer at the Atlantic Missile Range. He received his B. S. from the United States Military Academy at West Point. After serving with the U.S. Army, Bunch became a civilian pilot for the Sperry Gyroscope Company, Great Neck, N.Y. Prior to joining the staff of STL in 1959, he was a member of the technical staff of several large companies specializing in electronics, ROBERT P. LlpKIS --- Temperature Control Engineer A member of the technical staff, Research and Development Division, Lipkis earned his B.S. in mechanical engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, and his M.S. degree in engineering at UCLA. Associated with the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics and the Engineering Department of UCLA prior to joining STL in 1956, Lipkis specializes in heat tranafer ana thermal environment. He is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Tau Beta Pi and Sigma Xi, WILLIAM H, SCHILLING, JR Vehicle Assembly Engineer Project Able Vehicle Development Engineer, Research and Development Division. Schilling earned his B.S. degree in physics at Pennsylvania State University where he also served as a research assistant. His previous experience includes research and development of control devices and fuzes; explosives initiation and propagation: efectrical energy sources; electrostatics and mass spectrometer development; and systems tests of ordnance equipment.
8 Schilling is a member of the Scientific Research Society of America, the American Ordnance Association and the American Rocket Society. WILLIAM F. SHEEHAN --- Vehicle Test Engineer Manager, Vehicle Development Department, Research and Development Division. Sheehan was graduated with a B. S. degree in aeronautical engineering from New York University. In 1948 he joined the Sperry Gyroscope Company where he worked on the Sparrow I Project. While there he earned his M.S. in aeronautical engineering at NYU. His major academic interests were aerodynamics and stability and control. Sheehan joined STL in September, 1958, and since that time has performed work in flight planning and flight test analysis and instrumentation. His current assignment at STL involves ground and flight testing of structural and propulsion systems of Able vehicles. EDWARD W. BANIOS --- Associate Project Engineer A member of the Technical Staff, Experimental Space Missions, Director's Office. Banios received his B. S. E. E. at the Drexel Institute of Technology in During his nine years of experience he specialized in feasibility studies of sbticinverters for use on ICBM weapon systems. Prior to joining the staff of STL he was an electrical system staff engineer with the Douglas Aircraft Company. The author of one technical paper, Banios has two patents pending. He is a member of The American Rocket Society, AIEE and Tau Kappa Epsilon. # # #
