MTEC-224 Lab #4 Working with Audio and Video In this Lab, you will load music and sound effects from the DA-88 into ProTools, and align them to picture from a video tape. The materials for this Lab consist of a VHS tape labeled MTEC-224 NEW Lab #4, and also a DA-88 tape similarly labeled. These materials are kept in the Studio Office. You will work in M27 or Studio C for this Lab. The audio tracks are laid out on tracks 1/2 of the DA-88 tape, one after the other (tracks 3-8 are empty). There are four stereo stems in total. Your job is to load them all into ProTools, and lined up each with picture. The beginning of each stem has a 2-pop (tone) to help you do this. There s a lot of set-up involved here, so, read this carefully: Setting up the VTR (the Panasonic DS-550) On the equipment rack with the VTR, find the video out selector switch (it s near the Panasonic VTR), and choose VTR 1 as the source for the video monitor. Make sure everything s powered up, of course... Reset the Panasonic DS550/555 to it s default condition as follows: Set the DIAL MODE switch to MENU, and you ll see the Menu displayed on the video monitor. You need to change the following: ITEM# (Description) You should set to: (Tape Protection) 01 (Auto Advance) (Audio Ch2) 01 (LTC) (Status Super) 00 (Off) (TC Out Signal) 01 (Regen) To change these settings, turn the jog wheel to scroll to each item, then press and hold the STOP button to see that item s current setting. While holding the STOP button, use the jog wheel to change the value as needed, then release the STOP button and move to the next item. When you are done, press the big SEARCH (SET) button (to the right of the FF button) to enter your changes, then set the DIAL MODE switch back to SEARCH. Next, on the VTR s LED display, make sure that it says CH2-TC. Also, using the buttons under the display, set the CTL/TC/UB mode to TC in the display, and make sure LTC/AUTO/VITC is set to AUTO. Press the ON SCREEN button to display the timecode readout on the video monitor. Patch timecode from VTR 1 into the DA-88 and also into ProTools (really the Sync I/O). Use a mult for this. 2 Setting up the DA-88 Set the DA-88 to P.in = timecode Hit the display button until you get to the ABS display. Next, hit the up/down arrows simultaneously, and you should see the setting for P.in. Use up/down arrows to set this to tc. Set tc out = tc, and the framerate to non-drop Hit the display button repeatedly until you get to the timecode display. Press the up/down arrows simultaneously to see the DA- 88 s timecode settings. Hit the display button to cycle through the parameters, and set them accordingly; framerate = ndf, and tc out = tc. When you are done, hit the display button A LOT to cycle through all the parameters, and back to the timecode display. Set the DA-88 clock to Video. Setting up the Big Ben Set-Up buttons and LED These buttons are used to modify all settings on Big Ben. In general, setting modification requires 4 steps: enabling Setup mode, choosing the parameter to be modified; choosing the desired value and disabling Setup mode. 1. Enable Setup mode by simply pressing any of the SETUP buttons. The SETUP LED will illuminate and the value selected the previous time SETUP mode was enabled will blink. 2. Press either the PREV or NEXT buttons until the current value of the parameter to be modified is blinking. 3. Press either the UP or DOWN buttons until the desired value is blinking. 4. If no buttons are pushed for 2 seconds, Setup mode is disabled automatically, and the value which was blinking will now illuminate solidly. All settings (except some VSO settings) are saved in nonvolatile memory, and will be recalled the next time Big Ben is powered up. Set the Big Ben Clock Source to: VIDEO Set the Big Ben Sample Rate to: 48kHz Created by JAL Created on 11/22/06 4:54 AM Page 2 of 6
Setting up the DM2000 Clock the DM2000 to the word clock. Reset the DM2000 as you ve done previously, including the Input and Output patching, and recalling Mix scene 0. The DA-88 comes into the DM2000 digitally via card slot. Bring the appropriate DM2000 faders up, and make sure you have audio coming from the DA-88 (program starts at tc=00:01:00:00). Take the DA-88 s signals out of the DM2000 s 2-Mix, and route them into ProTools via the DM2000 s Buss 1/2. Set up the DM2000 to monitor the first output pair from ProTools (via card slot). Setting up ProTools Make a new session, setting the sample rate to 48k, and create 2 MONO Audio tracks In ProTools Session window, set the Sync I/O to clock from video ref. Check that both the green Lock light and yellow Speed Cal light are on. Set the session frame rate to NDF Set the session start time to 00:59:30:00, since the video program starts at 01:00:00:00. Setting the Offset on the DA-88 Since the video program starts at a timecode address of 01:00:00:00, yet the audio starts at a timecode address of 00:01:00:00, you ll have to set an offset. The offset is calculated as the SLAVE Timecode value MASTER Timecode value. In this case, since the video deck is the timecode master and the DA-88 is the timecode slave, the offset is calculated as 00:01:00:00 (the DA-88) minus 01:00:00:00 (the video program), or 00:59:00:00. A timecode offset is always set on the slave machine, which in this case is the DA-88. To do so, hit the DISPLAY button on the DA-88 until you get to the OFFSET display. Using the up/down arrows on the DA-88, set the offset time to 00:59:00:00. Note that the display changes VERY SLOWLY when you hold the down arrow! If you press DISPLAY while holding down the up or down arrows, the offset time parameter changes much faster. Hit DISPLAY a second time, and it goes even faster ~ maybe even too fast! It takes a few minutes to Created by JAL Created on 11/22/06 4:54 AM Page 3 of 6
get the hang of how to use this feature strategically, and even then it s a little frustrating, but eventually to set the OFFSET time to 00:59:00:00... Note that we aren t setting an OFFSET for ProTools. Instead, your Pro Tools session will use the same timecode addresses as the video program. Loading the first stem Put the ProTools track in record ready, and play the DA-88. If everything s fine, you should have audio running through the DM2000 into ProTools, and out of ProTools back into the DM2000 for monitoring. Rewind the video to 15 seconds before the program starts Put the DA-88 in chase, so that it will chase the video tape. Since you ve set the offset to -00:59:00:00, the DA-88 will play in sync with picture. Put ProTools in ONLINE mode (CMD-J, or Operations/Online). It should now be ready to chase the timecode coming from the video deck. Hit record on the ProTools transport, and play the video. The DA-88 should chase in play, and ProTools should chase while recording, and you should be recording the DA-88 tracks into ProTools. At the end of the spot let the VTR run for another 5 seconds or so, then hit STOP. Take ProTools out of ONLINE mode, and playback the audio to make sure it s ok. Loading the other three stems There are three more stems to load from the DA-88, all on tracks 1/2. This time, you ll record them into ProTools without making ProTools or the DA-88 chase timecode. Instead, you ll record the stems into the Session wherever you like, and then realign them to sync to picture. Make a new stereo track, and set it s I/O to A 1/2. In one pass, record the other three stems into this track. ProTools should not be ONLINE for this, and the CHASE button on the DA-88 should not be engaged. Just hit RECORD on ProTools, and hit PLAY on the DA-88. When you are done, take ProTools out of record, and check your recording. Created by JAL Created on 11/22/06 4:54 AM Page 4 of 6
Resyncing these stems Now we can place these three stems where they belong. You ll need to make two more stereo tracks, so you have four total - one for each stereo element. Cut up the three new stems into individual regions, and move them into separate tracks. Find the sync pop in each stem and line them up with the first stem you recorded, since it s already at the correct location. You can do this in SLIP mode by freely dragging these regions. If you prefer, you can place a sync point at each 2-pop (Edit/Identify Sync Point), then use SPOT mode to type in the correct timecode address for the sync point (2 seconds before 01:00:00:00). When everything s all lined up, put ProTools back ONLINE. When you play the video, ProTools will chase, and you should hear all four stereo elements play, sync d to picture. At this point, you can edit and nudge the audio any way you like to get it just right. Surround Setup The elements that you have just loaded into ProTools are for a surround project. The first stem was the Front Left & Right, the second was the two surround channels and the third was the center and the LFE. To play these back in surround we need to configure the monitoring system and rearrange the ProTools outputs. Monitoring Make sure the Studio Com system is engaged by selecting the sur button on the panel in the rack to the right of the console. On the Studio Com remote, select the A input. ProTools Setup for Surround Under the Setup menu in ProTools choose I/O In the Output page, select all the output assignment paths in the left hand column and delete them. Check to make sure the Surround default setup is set to Film style Click New Path and notice that a new assignment path has been added to the left hand column labeled Path 1. Click the? to the right of Path 1 and choose 5.1. Click the first box in the output assignment matrix under the picture of the 192 hardware and make sure the channel assignments come up as L C R Ls Rs LFE. Created by JAL Created on 11/22/06 4:54 AM Page 5 of 6
On the Mixer page, assign all of your channels to Path 1 output. Notice that the normal panning tool has turned to a square grid. Click the Output Window button the small button just above the meter next to the fader in the channel strip. This opens the full view of the panning grid for that channel. Click on the green dot and position it in the appropriate corner for each track. The Front Left should be panned to the upper left hand corner, the Center to the top of the grid in the center and the Right to the top right corner. The surround channels should be panned to the bottom left and right corners respectively. Put all fader to 0 (zero) Put the ProTools session back On-Line and play the video. Sit back and enjoy the surround mix Final Delivery When you are done, save your session and quit ProTools. Back up your session by burning a copy of it in Toast, saving to your Firewire drive, or whatever. Make a second CDr to hand in, unless your instructor has given you alternate instructions on how to submit your session for this Lab. On or before the due date, submit a manila envelope, properly labeled, containing your session on a CDr, a Session Report (appx 2-3 pages) from each Lab partner, and any other paperwork you generated during this Lab. Each team can submit everything in a single envelope. Created by JAL Created on 11/22/06 4:54 AM Page 6 of 6
