1 Intro to Jazz Improvisation: Mus121b Tues. + Friday 12:30-1:50 Prerequisites: Ability to read music and facility on an instrument. This course explores some of the tools improvisers use to develop their craft: melody, harmony, rhythm, articulation, listening, and phrasing. This is approached through a series of exercises along with the playing and analysis of standard jazz tunes and the composing of solos over standard chord changes. Week 1 1-[Tues. Jan 21] Overview [make copies of all assignments and bring them to class for me to take] Chord Symbols Hand out: Senders play along CD/ Music as Language/ Notation Chord symbol basics and assignment Miles solo on So What Huxley Everyone purchase a metronome, music paper, and have access to something to play along with. Assignment: Chord symbol assignment [Write out notes to various chord symbols highlighting guide tones] bring metronome to next class begin learning Milesʼ So What solo 2-[Fri. Horns whole notes on chord tone, 3.change notes, in 1/8 notes, 5, in 1/8 notes one person walks bass line while the other solos using blues phrases (go around the room in pairs) Assignment: Write 3 motives on Dominant 7 chords from Sonny Moon [indicate various chords it will work with and intervallic makeup] Scales in 1/8 notes over Blues 6- [Fri. Feb 7] Collect Motives Sonny Moon using motives Motivic development Assignment: Memorize a tune from Riff Heads Write and learn to play 2 chorus solo on 12 bar blues, 1st chorus based on Riff style and 2nd on one or two motives using extensions.
