1 ADVICE FOR HL1 STUDENTS FROM THE STUDENTS OF HL1 PHYSICS with minor editing There are some very important things you should know before jumping into this class. Everything you thought you knew about physics will turn out to be wrong. You must empty your mind of anything you thought you knew about physics. This class is all about learning new concepts and ideas, but you can t just learn them and expect to earn an A. In this class you must understand how to use these concepts and apply them to real situations. This is not an easy A class. You earn your grade and you must be willing to put in a lot of work to earn a good grade. You will get a lot of homework and it seems like it will never end, but you must stick with it and continue to learn everything you can. Everything that Grul says is worth taking note; it will all be used later. When you re studying each chapter you cannot forget what you learned on the previous chapter. It will ALL be used again at the end of the year. You must be in this class for the long run and not just hope to get an A. This is a very challenging and mind blowing class that requires effort, persistence, and determination to succeed. Grul shows no mercy, so DO NOT make up excuses. If you didn t do an assignment, or don t understand, own up to it and admit it. In this class you cannot hide behind you lab partner and expect them to do all of the work, he will know if you don t understand it, you must put in a lot of work. This is a very fun and interesting class, but that doesn t mean it s easy. It will challenge you and push you to your limits. Don t give up and don t get discouraged by a bad test or quiz. Put it behind you and push forward. Do the homework. It helps. Expect weekend homework Get really good at writing small and fast Take notes in class, but take advantage of the fact that they re all online Be prepared to spend a while on the work, but don t forget that you have five other classes Study with other people most of the time it s pretty darn useful Develop good study habits early on Make sure you re able to get access to the internet at school, home, the library, or whatever. Just make sure you have it as well as Adobe flash player it s part of Mastering Physics (MP) Your brain will melt when your assumptions about the world are shattered. Be ready for that. Despite all appearances, it really is a fun class. Deciding if you want to take the course: Do you want a challenge that s actually not awful? This is a good fit. Do you prefer conceptual physics? This may not be the course for you. The homework load isn t really that bad; don t let it scare you off. If you re not sure between HL and SL, take HL and decide. It worked out for me. 1. Ration your homework time with your chill time 2. Understand your expectations 3. Nearly 100 equations are on the AP equation sheet so memorize them WHILE YOU CAN 1. Honestly, I never read the chapters in the book. Personally, just reading about this physics topics didn t help with my understanding unless we had already had a Lecture

2 and Discussion (L&D). The best way to learn is to listen to the L&Ds and take a lot of good notes because you will need to look back at your notes for the homework. If you don t take notes you re SCREWED. Take notes. You ll need to go back and review all of the topics for the AP test at the end of the year, so you re notes have to be good. TAKE NOTES. And make sure you do your Mastering Physics (MP) homework, so that you can come prepared the next day for the quiz to ask questions and increase your understanding. If you fall behind in this class it s really hard to catch up because the pace is so quick, so the MP and the MP quiz are crucial. 2. If you have a genuine curiosity in how the world works, take this class. If you have a lot of trouble with math, do not take this class. If you like a community environment that makes even the worst days fun, take this class. If you don t mind the teacher mocking your mother, take this class. If you like taking field trips to the roof Take this class. If you don t like physics Why are you even considering this class? If you have a 4.0 Prepare to lose it. If you like being able to brag that you have the best teacher in the school, take this class. If you like eating chocolate during big tests, take this class. If you want to be challenged on a daily basis, take this class. This was my favorite class this year, and probably will be next year. If you are not used to going on a computer very often well you soon will be You must do your MP and read the book!!!! If you do not you are screwing yourself. When you get new equations it is really helpful to make flash cards and rearrange the equations as much as you can. If you start thinking about black holes you re probably lost. At that point ask for help! Remember tangents can be a lot of fun!... but if you take this train off the tracks be prepared to smack yourself in the face.. Figuratively of course. Do your work! If you must procrastinate do it in some other class like English. Physics is much too cool to not do. Physics is like a giant toy store. Once you start playing you can t stop nor can you get through all the toys. 1. Read the Chapter Summaries! 2. Make sure you understand the unit well, and are able to apply the equations in real situations. 3. Do the HW. It may not seem fun at first, but you will get a better understanding of the entire unit when you do the HW. 4. Always remember to collect your paper cut money. 5. Have fun with the AP test. You guys will do fantastic! ;-) - Pay attention during lectures and discussions - Always do the MP - Choose your lab partner wisely. They will be your partner the whole year. - Try to lead Mr. Grul off on a tangent whenever you can - Study your a** off for the tests if you want to have a decent grade in the class - Always draw your FBDs! - Find a class b**** to mess with for the year - Aspiring to be in HL physics

3 - If you are not good at math, you will not be good at this class - The grade in this class is mostly test-based, if tests are not your forte then you will have a hard time Take notes that come orally, you can look at the slides online for what s on the screen later. Organize study groups if you re struggling. Ask good questions Don t let yourself get behind Try to do the homework as early as possible so that you don t do it at the last minute like [ ] Have a computer Expect homework over the weekend Memorize equations early Don t forget to toad them. If you don t have things to do, go to theuselessweb.org Should you take this class? If you expect to do lots of labs, don t take this class If you are not comfortable with algebra, don t take this class If you are comfortable with computers, this is a good class to take If you use the internet frequently you will understand the title slide. If you don t like to write, good you don t do much writing in this class. Don t be cocky. You WILL end up looking like an idiot and an a**hole. Unless you re [ ] then you just look like an a**hole. If you aren t going to read the chapters from the book, at least look over the chapter summaries to see the key points and key equations. CHEAT ON MASTERING PHYSICS o Seriously if you don t get it. Just look up the solution so you understand how it works and how to do it in the future. Listen during class and make sure you understand what he is saying. Just regurgitating what he s saying onto a piece of paper will not help you understand later on. For at least the first half of the year never ever ever ever ever try to find short cuts. I know it s annoying but you will just have to deal with it. Try to conceptually understand the subject and its equations before you jump into the mastering physics/math problems. Don t choose Credit/No credit first quarter unless you think you might get a D in the class. At the end of every quarter look back at your notes and the chapter summaries to at least try to

4 retain what you know. Look up a practice AP B practice test ASAP so you know what to expect. -Do the homework and make sure to use the hints on Mastering physics. -Don t be afraid if you have no idea what you are doing for the first month and a half. -I didn t read the textbook and I got A s and B s. Just make sure to do homework. -Study with your friends for tests and homework- Make a Facebook page, compare notecards, order pizza and do physics! - Take notes and paraphrase on every lecture. It really helps to look back on them. - Have fun. Mr. Grul is chill. Take advantage of tangents. JUST KIDDING. -Ask many questions because he will answer them all. - Realize that you are in the same boat as many other people around you. 1.) Take HL physics year 1 if: -You are comfortable with getting a bit frustrated. -Are fairly solid with Algebra and Trigonometry. - You are not frightened of having an epiphany of being wrong your entire life. -If you enjoy math. - Want to get college credit at the end of the year. -Want to be challenged. -Want to open your mind to the world. 2.) Don t take HL physics year 1 if: -You absolutely hate math. -You have bad study habits -You are a complete f***ing moron. - You don t pay attention during lectures. -You don t want to spend a lot of time over a computer. 1. Do all of your MP s, they might be too hard but not doing them adds up in the long run. 2. Make a really detailed notecard, it helps a lot 3. Make sure to make fun of Mr. Grul at all opportunities. It relieves tension and makes the class more fun. 4. He might insult your mother, respond in kind. 5. Always draw on the chalkboards; Mr. Grul loves it when there are a lot of scribbles on the boards. Especially the front ones. 6. Feel free to ask slightly relevant questions related to physics. Mr. Grul will go on a tangent and you ll learn something fun. Whether or not to take HL Physics 1. If you honestly want to take a difficult class, take this one. 2. If you think you don t have the balls to handle it, get the **** out. 3. If you have a 4.0 and don t feel very attached to it, take this class. 4. In seriousness, if you can handle a mostly test based class, take this one. I loved this class, it was definitely hard at times, but all in all, I liked it. You must like physics. Do the MP all the way through as best you can.

5 Don t beat up on yourself for doing poorly on things just try to get better for the next test. Do not be lab partners with [ ] or anyone remotely like him It will ruin your grade for the first quarter and you won t understand anything that s happening. Once you have found a suitable lab partner, never do the conceptual questions on mastering physics, wait until your partner has done them and then just copy their answers. It honestly helps your grade a lot. Make a study group and actually study with them. Kids who are thinking about taking it: You really have to understand and appreciate math and physics things because this class is a b!@&, but like its super fun and it will be your favorite class. Advice is for the weak. Advice to those poor souls who have decided to enter this class: Congrats! Welcome to Hell! You have successfully entered into to a class that will push you to the breaking point. But if you stick with this class, you will find yourself enlightened, and your current perception of reality changed. This class really does test you, but if you re strong enough you should be able to get through it. Cheers and f*** MP! Advice to those thinking of taking this class This class has changed my life. It has been an enlightening class and I really recommend taking it. I have learned so much this year, and by taking this class, you are considered a step above everyone else. This class has really helped me in my other classes to. It s Awesome and so is Grul! Cheers! Advice for next year s HL1 kids: Do all of the work and actually understand the material because the AP test at the end of the year is hard. REALLY hard. Advice for kids who are deciding to take the class: If you don t like a lot of work, don t take this class. 1. STUDY. STUDY BEFORE SATAN CLAIMS YOUR SOUL FOR HIS OWN AND SENDS YOU INTO THE HELLFIRES OF FAILURES AND CREDIT RECOVERY. Seriously, even if you NEVER study for any other class, study this shit. DO THE MP s, read the books if you need help with equations. It s self-explanatory, but it is impossible to bullshit this class. Physically impossible. Be careful about your lab partner. Don t worry about not being partners with your best friend, by the end of the year your class will probably be one big family. STOCK UP ON ADULT DIAPERS. 2. If you don t study, don t take this class. If you don t do homework, don t take this class. If you want an easy A, don t take this class. If you want your butthole to remain tight, don t take this class. If you are saving yourself for marriage, don t take this class.

Next Year s Kids: Mathematically, you CAN pass this class without doing the MP s and readings. As far as understanding the subject matter, you CANNOT without doing the MP s and reading.

If you and math and hard work DO get along, take this class because you ll do pretty well and have fun. If you and math and hard work are only at an understanding but you think you can make it work, take this class because Grul is AWESOME!!!!!! Advice to those who seek the secrets of the world Never be afraid to ask questions about anything, if you don t understand something there will be multiple test questions about it. Be prepared to bow to your new lord, Mastering Physics. ADVICE 1. STUDY FOR THE TESTS 2. DO THE MP 3. FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS ON THE HOMEWORK QUIZZES 4. YOU CAN PROBABLY BE A DICKHEAD DURING L&D BUT MAKE SURE YOU WRITE DOWN THE EQUATIONS. THE REST IS ALL BULLSHIT GRUL PROPAGANDA 5. THE BOOK HAS ALL THESE CHEATING EQUATIONS FOR SHORTCUTS ON THE MP. THEY DERIVE THEM FOR YOU SO IF YOU REALLY WANT TO BE LAZY USE THEM 6. YAHOO ANSWERS WILL SAVE YOUR F**ING A** IN THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR WHEN YOU

7 STILL THINK MP S ARE HARD. 7. IF YOU DON T GET HOW THE CLASS WORKS BY THE END OF THE 1 ST QUARTER JUST GTFO UNDECIDED KIDS 1. IF YOU SUCK AT ALGEBRA DON T TAKE THIS CLASS 2. IF YOU LIKE HATING LIFE AND DROWNING IN SELF PITY THIS CLASS IS FOR YOU 1. Take notes when you read, actually read the book, and don t just look up the answers on the Yahoo Answers. The more you put into the course, the more you get out. 2. If you like learning how and why things happen in the universe, then physics is the class for you to take. If you know algebra, then you can do this class. If you like feeling smarter than everyone else, then take this class. 1. Do your homework, don t fall to master grul s trickery, you ll know the first day 2. If you re not good at math don t take this class. Or if you re worried about your GPA getting raped, then don t take this class. p.s. Get ready to spread those brain cheeks you re going to get mind r***ed My advice for next year physics students is: 1. Know what you are getting into because if you don t it can get pretty stressful. 2. Don t take this class if you don t like math because you will use it a lot 1. Always study and keep up with MP Always do book notes, don t just use lecture notes Save your notes for later tests Use the online website Be a lab partner with [ ] so you [get] 100% on all labs 2. Don t take this class if you want an A, unless you re [ ] If you re gonna take the class be ready to study/ do MP like an hour to two every day Do your homework Cause the AP Physics test is hard as balls. If you prefer your mind un-blown, don t take this class. Read the book it will help you more than you think Don t put off MP homework Take good notes and actually study You might think you re good at physics, but you re not. Be ready for you mind to be blown. The final test is hard, but not impossible. If you hate math, don t take this class Bear in mind: the boys in this class will revert to their 7 year old selves (this particular class had a 5:1 guy-to-girl ratio) This class is hard Mr. Grul doesn t take late hw

Advice from HL1 2013-14 If you don t want to spend time outside of class understanding and working on physics, don t take this class. If you want to take this class, review your algebra skills. Seriously.
