12 Family Genealogy Group Sheet This is used in your ancestral research and is the basis for your lineal chart. This sheet shows what is known as "nuclear families" i.e. parents and their offspring, not other family members like aunts, uncles etc. You will record life events such as dates and places of birth, marriage, death and interment on this sheet. With a family genealogy group sheet you can also cite sources or record any inaccurate information. Family genealogy group sheets are essential because they are a basic medium for documenting your findings, they allow you to easily see what family genealogy information is absent, and also allow you to share your findings with others. There are a few simple guidelines to follow when recording family genealogy information on these charts/sheets, which will give you a good indication of any family genealogy information you still need to compile. It will also prevent you from documenting inaccurate information. Full Birth Names - should always be listed starting with first, middle and then last name. Use only full birth names i.e. Katherine Mary O'Hara not Katie or Kathy M. O'Hara. If you can't find a relative's middle name, it is acceptable to use a middle initial if it is known. Last Names - should always be recorded in capital letters. This makes transmission into lineal charts easier and also makes distinguishing the family name from the middle name simple i.e. David Andrew CLARKE Maiden Names - female relatives should be recorded using their maiden names (if they are married) instead of their married names. If you can't find a female relative's birth name, place the woman's first name on the chart and then put two parenthesis () after it or you can add the husband's surname as well followed by the parenthesis i.e. Louise () or Louise () PAULSEN. Multiple Marriages - a female relative who has married more than once would be recorded with her first name (middle name can be added as well) followed by her maiden name in parenthesis and then the names of each of her husbands in successive order. For example, Diane MARSHALL was first married to Bernard GARRETT followed by a second marriage to Walter ANDERSON. Therefore, her name would be recorded as Diane (Marshall) GARRETT or Diane (Marshall) GARRETT ANDERSON. Nick Names - these can be recorded after the person's first name rather than using it in place of the proper name. In this case you will use quotation marks in place of the parenthesis, i.e. John "Buddy" Michael JAMISON. If the name is a shortened form of the proper name i.e. Becky for Rebecca, then you can omit it completely if you like. Multiple names - in the case of multiple names due to name changes or legal adoption, you can include the surrogate name in parenthesis following the last name. Be sure to put a.k.a. (abbreviation for also known as) right before the surrogate name i.e. Rose Marie TURNER (a.k.a. Rose Marie HAMILTON) Name Variations - if there are any variations in the spelling of the last name include those as well. Add the primary spelling followed by the spelling variation i.e. Dennis Philip BRAUN/BROWN. Recording Same Last Names - if a woman's maiden name is the same as her married name then make sure you record that fact to prevent confusion at a later time.
