1 Genealogy COMO 2017 Family History Conference October 7 SESSION PRESENTERS AND TOPICS * indicates beginner level topic Dennis Allen Dennis Allen has learned, after 30 years researching his own family that sometimes we only need to go back to the basics and use a simple process in finding what we need. Dennis has volunteered for many genealogical/historical organizations in Iowa and the Midwest and, along with Cris Nagla, has given many presentations. In addition to mastering new technologies that enhance cemetery research, much of their free time is spent cleaning stones and showing others how to do so safely. Cemetery Mapping with Excel Spreadsheets are a great way to map your cemetery. Create a new map that has the power to find what you want, or need. Take these Excel tips and move to any spreadsheet program. Mom, What do you call Aunt Dot? This is a lesson on good documentation that is a hilarious genealogist s nightmare. It can be so confusing that I even have to stop and think as I teach it. This is a story you cannot make up. Kelsey Berryhill Kelsey Berryhill is a Research Analyst and evolunteer Coordinator at the Missouri State Archives, where she has worked since February Pay It Forward: Indexing at the Archives evolunteers are responsible for the creation of 99% of the online indexes available at the Missouri State Archives. Learn how to use online indexing applications to help give back to the genealogy community.

2 Tim Dollens Tim Dollens has been hooked on researching his and other s-- family history since he was a teenager when his aunt Betty Lou asked him to type up her book, The Zug, Zuck, Zook Family Trail about a branch of his tree. He is Past President of the Genealogical Society of Boone County and Central Missouri and is the current president of the Missouri State Genealogical Association. As a senior associate with the Daniel Boone Regional Library in Columbia, MO, he often helps patrons with their family history. Missouri: The Spoiled Brats in Genealogy We are the Show Me state for a reason! Tim will show you why we are the spoiled brats of genealogy, whether or not your ancestors were ever in Missouri. Learn about the various records, repositories, databases and collections, and organizations that make doing family history research in Missouri easier than it is for many people in other states. John Dougan John Dougan serves as the Missouri State Archivist, where he oversees the Records and Archives Division in the Missouri Secretary of State s Office. The Archives is possibly best known for it s award winning Missouri State Archives website, MissouriDigitalHeritage.com. Show Me Military Records This session will focus on using military records to help you trace your ancestors. Their enlistment, duty, discharge and benefit records document both their military service and their family history. Examples from the Missouri State Archives will be used as models of these valuable sources. Introduction to Missouri Digital Heritage* More than 9 million records can be accessed through Missouri Digital Heritage, including the collections of the Missouri State Archives, the Missouri State Library and other institutions from across the state. This session will explore some of the genealogy resources available and provide some tips on using the site. Ann Griffin Ann Griffin spends her days trying to keep up with her two precocious little girls, Elizabeth and Sarah. In a former life she had an exciting career, loved to travel, and read lots of good books. She took up an early interest in preserving family histories when she decided to record her grandmother s life story so it wouldn t be forgotten. Everyone has a Story! We all have a story to tell. Come explore creative ways to preserve your family s stories. From precious memories to family recipes, we ll have displays and discussions to get you inspired on your next project.

3 Melissa Holyoak Melissa Holyoak is a part-time attorney and full time mother of four who strives to find the quickest and most efficient means for recording her family s story. Modern Ways to Record Our Histories Genealogy looks backward to our ancestors stories, but we may also look forward by recording our own stories for future descendants. When we think about the questions we would like to ask our ancestors, we should be preparing those same answers for our descendants. Unlike our ancestors, we have many modern tools available to record our stories and family histories. This workshop will explore some of the questions we may want to answer for our descendants, as well as the various tools we may use for recording our own histories. Harvey James Harvey James has been researching his own family history for over 25 years. Although he learned he is not related to the infamous 19th century American outlaw, he has traced his roots to Cornish tin miners and Danish farmers. He loves the new Family Tree function that FamilySearch.org unveiled several years ago, and he has pretty much mastered it. He can help you do the same. Family Tree 101* Learn how to build and enhance your family tree on FamilySearch.org. Learn how to add and edit information, find and attach sources, upload stories and photos, and tag people in your family tree. Jodi McCall Johnson Jodi McCall Johnson has been doing research for 45 years. She works in the local family history center, and is a member of International Society for British Genealogy and Family History. She has also completed weeklong workshops on English (pre 1837), Welsh and Scottish research and has made two trips to England and Wales to do on-site research. Let s Go Back Across the Pond A look at strategies for finding our English ancestors, repositories, websites and general guidelines for research in England, Wales and Scotland.

4 Cheryl Lang Cheryl Lang, MLS is the Manager of the Midwest Genealogy Center branch of Mid-Continent Public Library in Independence, Missouri. She was previously employed as the Digital Collections Librarian, and these positions have fueled the genealogy bug she acquired more than 35 years ago. Her previous library experience includes 13 years as a rural library director. Ms. Lang obtained her master s degree in library science from Emporia State University, Emporia, Kansas and bachelor degrees in both management and computers from Webster University, St. Louis, Missouri. Census Records The U.S. census is a great place to start tracing your ancestors. The first Federal Population Census was taken in 1790, and a census has been taken every 10 years since that date. Learn what census years are available, what information they contain, and how to access them. You will also learn what different information was included on each federal census and how to access that information. Introduction to the Midwest Genealogy Center* The Midwest Genealogy Center is the largest free-standing public genealogy library in the nation with more than 52,000 square feet of national and international genealogy resources for family history researchers. This class will include a virtual tour of the library and give an overview of both print and electronic resources freely available to you. Beginner or professional, come discover some hidden treasures and access your family history at the Midwest Genealogy Center. Daniel Lilienkamp Daniel Lilienkamp, J.D., is the Reference Specialist in the History & Genealogy Department at the St. Louis County Library. Dan earned a BA in History form Texas Lutheran University and J.D. from Tulane. He brings expertise in African American, German and French Canadian (Quebec) genealogy. Dan is particularly interested in complex sources and enjoys developing tools and programs to help researchers best utilize them. Accessing European Church Records Using records from Germany, Switzerland, and the British Isles as case studies, learn to identify place of origin and explore the goldmine of information European church records can reveal. Finding Your Ancestors in the Draper Manuscript Collection Were records of your early 19th Century pioneer and Appalachian ancestors collected by Lyman Draper? Discover how to find them in his manuscript collection.

5 Linda McCarty Linda McCarty has been involved in family history research for many years. She is the previous director of a family history center in Jefferson City. Explore the World with the FamilySearch Catalog FamilySearch Catalog is your doorway to a vast array of records throughout the world with information about your ancestors and the times they lived in. It is a guide to birth, marriage, and death records; census records; church registers; books; periodicals; family histories and many other records that contain genealogical information. These records may be searchable online or available on microfiche, microfilm, or in a book. In this session we will explore effective techniques for searching the FamilySearch Catalog and what it has to offer. Christina Miller Christina Miller is the Senior Reference Archivist at the Missouri State Archives. Christina graduated from Truman State University with a Bachelor of Arts in History and also holds a Masters of Archival Studies form the University of British Columbia School of Library, Archival and Information Studies. Introduction to the Missouri State Archives* As the official repository for state government records, the Missouri State Archives holds an abundance of genealogical resources. This session will provide you with an overview of the records available for research at the archives, as well as provide information on how to do distance research at the archives by using online databases or submitting research requests. Gateway to the West: Missouri Land Grant Records This session will explore the various land grant records available at the Missouri State Archives, from the French and Spanish era to the U.S. Land Sales and everything in between, and provide tips on how to explore these records.

6 Mary Stansfield Mary Stansfield is the Reference Archivist at the Missouri State Archives. Mary graduated from Missouri State University with a Bachelor of Arts in History and a Master of Arts in History. She is also a Certified Archivist. Before coming to the Missouri State Archives, she worked at the Wisconsin Historical Society as a processing archivist and microfilm technician. Introduction to Missouri County Records* From marriage and deed records to court records, naturalizations and coroners inquests, Missouri court records can provide genealogists with a wealth of information. This session will explore the various county records that exist in Missouri, how to determine what records are available at the Missouri State Archives, and how to research them in person, online or through a research request. Grandpa Stole Chickens in the Nighttime : What Penitentiary Records Can Tell You about Your Family. Learn about the genealogical information found in penitentiary, reformatory, and training school records. This session includes a brief history of the prison system in Missouri, a look at the types of records available, and tips to help your research. It wraps up with a case study on a man who really did steal chickens in the nighttime. Rob Taylor Rob Taylor, an avid genealogist, is past president of the Genealogical Society of Boone County and Central Missouri, and is currently the quarterly editor. He has served in several roles for the Missouri State Genealogical Association (MoSGA). Where Do I Begin?* Getting started in genealogy can be a daunting task. Where do I start? Where do I go? How do I organize everything? Learn the answers to these and other questions in this session. Putting It All Together* Now, that you ve done all this research, what do you do with it? We ll provide some suggestions for how to share what you ve discovered about your family s history with your family in a way they ll appreciate.

7 Amy L. Waters Amy L. Waters earned both a bachelor s and a master s degree in history from Emporia State University. She left her home state of Kansas in 2000 to join SHSMO as a reference specialist. Waters, an avid genealogist, has traveled to all 50 states and visited every US president s grave. Doing Genealogy at the State Historical Society of Missouri This session will introduce genealogists to the resources available at the State Historical Society of Missouri. Learn about the increasing digital collections on the Society s website, including the newspapers, plat maps, and manuscripts. Amy will also discuss the strategies for locating materials in our collections. Eric Wells Eric Wells has been active in genealogical research since His latest endeavor, Legacy Left Right, focuses on assisting family researchers in DNA genealogy and how to organize and present in a coherent and publishable format. As well as being active in his local genealogical society, he is also the Education Co-Coordinator for the NextGen Genealogy Network. Beginning DNA* The very basics of DNA testing for genealogy research: Which tests should you take? Which companies should you work with? What should you expect to come with the results? These questions will be covered in this beginner DNA tester s course. Applied DNA A Case Study Using DNA to Break Down Brick Walls Records and research could only reveal John Hubert Christopher s history back to his WWI draft card before he disappeared into the past. Who are his parents? Did he have any siblings? Follow along with this case study as we dive into Alabama records and DNA testing to bust through this brick wall. This is a case study which combines both old and new tools available to genealogy to find the family of John Huber Christopher. Publishing Your Family Heritage As family researchers, each of us has spent years gathering facts and background information about our ancestors. We know how it all fits together, but how will future generations know? Eric Wells discusses the problems and potential solutions for publishing your work and sparking interest within future generations.

8 Traci Wilson-Kleekamp Traci Wilson-Kleekamp, as a Family History Research Consultant, explores resources available online and in local, state and national historic repositories that help family historians discover more about their African-American heritage. She has been featured on the Missouri State Archives website: African-American Genealogy: Putting Together the Pieces of Your Past. She also hosts a blog at Tracilizz s Genealogy Blog & Diversity s Gleanings. Traci s enthusiasm for genealogy is contagious and her case studies are wonderful learning opportunities. Knowledge as Power: Freeing the Past through Family History This discussion will use esoteric clues in search of deeper meaning beneath the hidden and invisible narratives that tell a family s story. Using the tools of critical family theory allows researchers to evaluate esoteric clues and explore deeper historical and cultural meaning to analyze family identity, beliefs, social order and class position. When investigating memories, are family secrets tall tales or juicy gossip? What are the layers we leave out when conducting our family history research and why? Warren Zahler Born and raised in Western New York, Warren Zahler attended Alfred University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, receiving degrees in Chemistry and Biochemistry. While in Wisconsin, he met Lucy, a native of the Philippines, who became his wife of 49 years. He is retired from over 30 years of service as a faculty of University of Missouri. His genealogy interests include German, English and Filipino ancestry. Creating Your Own Webpages This session will describe the HTML codes used to make a web page with Text, Tables and Pictures and how to integrate pages into a web site. Templates will be provided to aid in coding pages.

9 ROOTSTECH VIDEO SESSIONS Judy G. Russell (RootsTech Video) The Legal Genealogist Judy G. Russell is a genealogist with a law degree who writes and lectures on topics ranging from using court records in family history to understanding DNA testing. On the faculty of IGHR, SLIG, and GRIP, she is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Board for Certification of Genealogists, from which she holds credentials as Certified Genealogist and Certified Genealogical Lecturer. Since February 2016, Joshua has been the President of the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society (NYG&B), America s second oldest genealogical organization, headquartered in New York City. 30 Pieces of Tech I Can t Live Without Josh discusses 30 pieces of technology without which he can not function. You might not be interested in each one, but surely there are some suggestions here which, if implemented, will make your research life a bit easier and better organized. Lisa Louise Cooke (RootsTech Video) Lisa Louise Cooke owns Genealogy Gems and hosts The Genealogy Gems Podcast.
