Shuman Dear Budding Artist; Greetings and welcome to How Great Thou Art II, a book which teaches the fundamentals and continues to build your foundation in drawing. As a budding artist, your goals should be to draw continually, to study from life whenever possible, and to learn new approaches and techniques. How Great Thou ART II can be done as a separate entity or as a continuation of How Great Thou ART I, as many of the lessons in the latter will be reveiwed in this text, however, with new lessons. How Great Thou ART II will also introduce two new subjects: Lettering and Calligraphy. Let us proceed then with a desire to learn the disciplines by building upon the fundamentals, step by step, lesson by lesson...always reviewing, always pressing on, always willing to learn. We would love to hear from you. You may want to give us your comments on the art program or send some copies of your artwork for us to evaluate. In any case, we encourage you to write us. Colossians 2:2-3 MATERIALS Our deisre is to keep the materials as simple and inexpensive as possible. It seems as if all students love to buy art supplies, but often they end up with far more art supplies than they need or know how to use. In the beginning, keep it simple and, as you improve, add a few basics, learning how to utilize each new art item as effectively as possible. We will use the same materials as in the first text, HOW GREAT THOU ART I, adding only a calligraphy pen to our recommended materials. I Kings 4:29 Lesson #1: Ellipses & Lines: In How Great ART I we practiced drawing lines and ellipses. Let s review this as such exercises are essential for improving. The key to drawing nice lines is control. A line should be drawn with one steady, fluid movement. On the next page, practice drawing lines using control. In the boxes at the top of the page do a series of diagonal lines as shown below (A); a series of horizontal lines (B); a series of vertical lines (C); and crosshatching (D). Directly below these exercises do a series of long, parallel lines (E). For ellipses, use a somewhat circular motion with your pencil - going around and around - lowering your pencil to the paper and lightly drawing each ellipse with four or five rotations (F). Your hand, wrist, and arm are locked into one. On the bottom of the next page, practice a series of ellipses in the figure box, making some larger, some thinner, some wider.
