2 LR MATHS SET 5 GUIDE PURPLE AW_Layout 1 05/09/ :14 Page 2 Introduction The Maths Comprehension Card Set is a collection of 60 progressively difficult stories that encourage students to apply their knowledge to real-life situations. Designed for use with individual year groups, each set covers all the key learning areas of maths, ensuring students develop problem solving skills across the subject. For ease of use, each learning area has been colour coded. The set includes non-fiction and fiction stories to engage students with varied interests and learning styles. Each story features six multiple-choice questions for students to answer after reading the stories. Some cards feature tables, graphs and charts for students to read. Others feature photographs to aid comprehension. Encourage students to select the equipment they may need to help solve the problem. Some can be worked through mentally; others may need a pencil and paper or calculator. The set is designed to provide supplemental learning activities to a lesson programme and can be used in a whole-class, small group or individual basis. Activities match the new curriculum for Year 7; progressing in difficulty from card one upwards. Use the story cards individually or photocopy them for small-group or whole-class reading activities. The student answer-sheet template card can be used to track answers and scores. Make enough copies of the answer sheet for students to work independently. The answer sheet includes an area for students to create their own questions to extend comprehension and problem solving skills. These questions will vary and should be marked subjectively. Note: For multiple uses of each card, always use a wet-erase marker. To ensure that your marker doesn t leave a permanent mark, test it on the corner of a card. Use a damp cloth to remove marks. Cards will warp if saturated with water.

Pupils should draw sketches to help them work out the answers to questions 5 and 6. Card 13: Encourage pupils to make sketches to help them to visualise what is happening in this activity. Card 41: When answering question 6, pupils should notice that the difference between consecutive ages is not always equal. Therefore, the ages do not form a sequence. Card 47: When answering question 2, pupils should remember that the formula for the area of a triangle is A = 1 bh 2 Card 18: To answer question 4, pupils use what they know about isosceles triangles. To answer question 6, pupils might find it helpful to sketch different isosceles triangles, and notice that the angle between the equal sides is not one of the equal angles. Card 54: Ensure pupils understand that a bulk discount means that if you buy more than a certain number of items, then you get a discount. Card 37: When answering the questions, pupils should remember that sides cannot be more than 3 units long.
