3 Areas Learned Behavior The Individual Social Style Their DNA Learned Skills Their Talents

The Individual Social Awareness and Character Clean Engaging Honest Modestly self-confident Can they represent our company

Natural Attributes The DNA Smart and Organized Analytical, Amiable, Driver, Expressive Research minded, fact oriented Support minded, people oriented Results minded, goal oriented Concept oriented, applause minded Comfortable in the fuzzy front end Needs to finish and pay attention to details

Interpersonal Style They are all good Analytical Amiable Driver Expressive More Assertive More People Oriented

Skills Required by DesignDesign Sketching Rendering (Photoshop) Model Making Problem Solving CAD (Solidworks) Graphics (Illustrator/FreeHand)

Problem Solving Research & discovery Ergonomics & user experience Resourcefulness in lieu of experience Insightful risk assessment Identification of ALL parts Learning manufacturing parameters

Sketching Critical Skill Drawing allows an industrial designer to share their process and justify their time Creative custom enclosure design is 80% of our deliverables (forms as well as moldable plastic parts, sheet metal, PCBs, screws) Creative part design, gadgets and packaging make up 20% (forms as well as latches, linkages, hinges, slides, handles, assembly steps, hands using things, etc./ use McMaster.com to find real parts and fasteners)

Comfortable generating options

Shares engineering principles quickly and informally with team

Leaves a trail behind to spark recollection and discussion

Can quickly clarify a principle in a presentation of ideas

Perspective AND Layout Both are essential for design and engineering development success Perspectives are essential for understanding, efficient communication, collaboration, and an emotional response (they can be deceiving and unattainable, advance with an underlay) Layouts prove everything fits (they address details)

Support perspectives with simple details

Rendering Markers over a sketch Photoshop over a sketch Illustrator or FreeHand SketchUp Rhino Solidworks

Very informal enhancement (for top of the funnel ideas)

Marker enhancement (your own style must be artistic)

Photoshop over a sketch (for color and finish options)

The ultimate pre-mfg vision (for bottom of the funnel consensus)

Illustrator or FreeHand software (faster and easier than CAD)

Quick CAD for SLA testing (true to the original design)

Illustrator or FreeHand software allows lots of options that look more commercial (faster and easier than CAD, in plan and elevation views, and includes graphics)

Rhino software (nerbs-based but not native in Solidworks)

SketchUp is another good visualizing tool (fast to show 7 sizes, but not real CAD)

Solidworks is Key for Geometry (Broadly used and produces this typical image, though it can produce photo-realistic renderings)

Model Making Blue foam Foamcore Technical feasibility / proof-of-concept SLA-type / CNC Appearance

Early volume studies eliminate disaster and build refinement, ergonomic confirmation and consensus (avoids too big at the end)

Quick Foam-core models for Market testing (essential)

Foam-core models inspire debate and confirm ergonomics (testing a full-scale configuration before prototyping saves money and time to market)

Proof-of-concept is part of risk assessment (ugly is OK)

SLA for early form confirmation SLAs for pre-assembly, revision, and tooling support Today SLAs and 3D-CAD communicate many tooling requirements world-wide. (2D documentation describes critical characteristics, materials, and finishes)

Appearance models allow early pre-release promotion (having an eye toward launch and sales is part of the obligation)

CAD Solidworks Advanced surfacing Rhino import vs. native files Logical parametric construction Learning manufacturing parameters Tolerancing and documentation

Organic shapes require advanced surfaces (A source of alienation for engineering if ID can t contribute the solution)

Graphics Control interfaces Packaging & Labeling Branding, logos and naming Tradeshows Presentations Manufacturing documentation

User experience is enhanced by a better GUI (logic, intuition, knowledge of mfg parameters and good graphics contribute to your product s focal point, whether it s in printed overlays or electronic displays)

Understanding alternate GUI Construction is Big

Demonstrate an understanding of all documentation (design, material and construction specifications)

Marketing support is an added plus (literature, web, advertising, packaging is an easier leap when brand building)

Packaging is design AND specification (bet you didn t know they made specialty gloves for women)

Some ID Marketing support can extend into product launch at Trade Shows

Contributing to Our Process DISCUSSION - Listen to client s perception of how DesignDesign can support client s success - Focus on strategies that meet client s requested objectives RESEARCH - Interview users for what they want, and watch them using products - Learn strengths and weaknesses of products in the marketplace - Propose innovative differences for consideration as key competitive advantages CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT - Sketch optional configurations searching for a brand-strengthening style - Configure components differently considering engineering and mfg. benefits - Highlight ergonomic requirements for convenience, intuitive use and safety

Contributing to Our Process DESIGN DEVELOPMENT - Integrate best ideas into one concept for development and review it again - Create a hand-sculpted model to avoid postponing, It s too big or too small! - Sketch parts with assembly features for all to understand and agree on GRAPHIC DEVELOPMENT - Analyze operation and propose logical interface designs for intuitive use - Use color, contrast, icons, words and graphics to organize info and elevate quality - Tastefully position product name/logo and corporate/logo for brand building CAD DEVELOPMENT - Create parts/assemblies that reduce complexity and assuring robustness - Leverage vendor participation to speed time to market - Assure concurrent engineering efforts are accomplished with synergy

Contributing to Our Process DESIGN CONFIRMATION - Expedite rapid prototyping to confirm design intent (paint & take PR photos) - Test design for manufacturability and assembly with all components - Amend documentation to reflect discoveries/improvements MANUFACTURING LIAISON - Clarify critical characteristics necessary for successful part acceptance - Manage delivery of tooling, first parts, and production part QC, Minimize time to market PACKAGING - Package for 0-defect delivery or point-of-purchase or reduced cost or all three - Make your packaging emphasize your brand and your message of quality PROMOTION - Trumpet a clear understanding/message of benefits and key competitive differences - Get brand consistency from product to show, web, literature, ads and more

In Closing when looking for any job Be prepared and make calls Call ONLY to get interviews and create interest; prospects generally don t return calls because they re busy, not because they don t want to speak to you; be persistent & push for a visit; have a link available in an to see your portfolio because big resumes won t be saved; a PDF resume/portfolio is essential but a link is better; keep s short and write plainly; many s with big attachements are filtered as spam. Be aware of your different audiences You may meet a President, entrepreneur, engineering or manufacturing director, VP sales, ID team or consultant, so be grateful and first say, Thank you for inviting me in. Ask questions, don t just present Say, What are you looking for in a person, and in this position? ; if they ask to see work, then show it. Listen, adjust, improve Don t fear rejection; ask for advice; suggest how you can contribute to an employer while you re learning. Be who you are, there is a fit somewhere Everyone is not a fit everywhere; there is opportunity; most businesses have NEVER leveraged ID!
