Domain Lesson 0 Drawings Common Core Standard: 7.G. Getting the Idea A scale drawing is a representation of an actual object. The scale tells how to reduce or enlarge the dimensions of a scale drawing. drawings are similar to and, therefore, proportional to the actual object. Example Ray went to visit the Great Pyramids. He learned that the base length of each triangular face is about 750 ft. He wants to make a scale drawing of the pyramids using the scale 5 50 ft. What will be the base length of his scale drawing? Strategy Use the scale to write a proportion. Step Write the scale as a ratio. The scale is 5 50 ft. This means that, for each inch of the scale drawing, the actual length is 50 feet. The ratio is 50 ft. Step Write a proportion using the ratio from Step. Step 3 Solution Let x represent the base length of the scale drawing. 5 base length of scale drawing 50 ft base length of actual pyramid 50 5 x 750 Solve the proportion x x x x x 5 5 The base length of Ray s scale drawing will be 5 inches. 8
Example Loretta made a scale drawing of an elephant. What is the actual length of the elephant?.5 ft Strategy Step Step Use the scale to write a proportion. Write the scale as a ratio. The scale is inch 5 feet. So the ratio is ft. Write a proportion. Let x represent the actual length of the elephant. ft 5 scale drawing length actual length Step 3 Solution 5.5 x Solve the proportion. 5.5 x 3 x x x x 5 The actual length of the elephant is feet. 85
A map is a type of scale drawing. You can use the scale on a map to find real-world distances, or use the scale to make an accurate map. Example 3 The poster of Happy Campground shows the distance between the lake and the cabins. Happy Campground Swimming Deck Playground Lake Dining Hall Cabins yd What is the actual distance between the lake and the cabins? Strategy Use the scale to write a proportion. Step Step Step 3 Solution Write the scale as a ratio. The scale is 5 inches 5 5 yards. So, the ratio is 5 5 yd. Write a proportion. Let x represent the actual distance. 5 5 yd 5 scale drawing distance actual distance x Solve the proportion x 5 3 x x 5 5 5x x 5 5 The actual distance between the cabins and the lake is 5 yards. 86 Domain : Geometry
Example Drake made the scale drawing below of the lounge at a recreation center. Lesson 0: Drawings Desks Table Sofa Sofa 3 ft What is the actual area of the lounge? Strategy Find the actual length and width of the lounge. Step Step Step 3 Measure the length and width of the scale drawing. The drawing is inches long and.5 inches wide. Write a ratio of the scale. The scale is inch 5 3 feet. So, the ratio is 3 ft. Write and solve a proportion to find the actual length. Let x represent the actual length of the lounge. 3 ft 5 scale drawing length actual length 5 3 x 3 x x 5 3 x 5 3 x 5 The actual length of the lounge is feet. 87
Step Step 5 Write and solve a proportion to find the actual width. Let y represent the actual width of the lounge. 3 ft 5 scale drawing width actual width y 3 y y y y 5 5 The actual width of the lounge is 5 feet. Find the area of the lounge. Area 5 length 3 width 5 ft 3 5 ft ft Solution The actual area of the lounge is 360 ft. Coached Example Two cities are 0 miles apart. Kerri wants to draw a map that has a scale of inch 5 50 miles. How far apart should Kerri draw the two cities on the map? The scale is inch 5 miles. Write a ratio of the scale as a fraction. Let x represent the scale drawing distance. Write a proportion to find the scale drawing distance. Solve the proportion. The scale drawing distance is inches. Kerri should draw the two cities apart on the map. 88 Domain : Geometry
