6 Living in Tutbury Quality of life is about the details of everyday living. From the little things, like knowing the nearest place to pick up a pint of milk, to more important matters like finding the right school or having a health centre nearby, you need to know that the community you re moving to will support you and your family, as well as be a pleasant place to live. So here s some useful information about the area around Doves Keep.
7 Local Roots There has been a settlement at Tutbury for over 3000 years, and the present Norman castle ruins stand on a hill encircled by Iron Age defensive ditches that can still be seen. The most famous resident of the keep was Mary Queen of Scots, imprisoned there on four separate occasions and said to be one of the spectres that haunt the ruin. Today the castle hosts a lively programme of events, many of them around paranormal themes. St Mary s church in Tutbury is reckoned to be the oldest usable building in Staffordshire. Transport Tutbury and Hatton railway station is on the Crewe to Derby line, connecting at Derby with services to St Pancras, a total journey time of two and a half hours. There are also regular buses to Uttoxeter and Burton passing along the High Street and stopping just yards from the development. Doves Keep is only around five minutes drive from Burton Upon Trent and 25 minutes from Derby. Entertainment There is a multi-screen Cineworld and a theatre presenting a varied programme of live shows at Burton Upon Trent, around three and half miles from Doves Keep. There are also two leisure centres, the Shobnall Complex which has impressive indoor and outdoor facilities, and the Meadowside Centre which includes a swimming pool. The choice of pubs in Tutbury village includes the historic Dog and Partridge, housed in a beautiful half-timbered Tudor building. Shopping The excellent selection of local shops in and around Tutbury High Street includes a post office, convenience store, pharmacy, gift shops, delicatessen, and hairdressers, off licence, a bank and fast food takeaway. Neighbouring Hatton, a short walk away, has a Midland Co-op supermarket, a butcher and a fruiterer, and Burton Upon Trent presents a wider choice of chain stores and local retailers. Doves Keep 03
8 Education & Health The Richard Wakefield C of E Primary School is just half a mile from Doves Keep, and there is a second primary school, Heath Fields, within walking distance in Hatton. The local secondary school is De Ferrers Academy, a popular and respected specialist technology college on the northern edge of Burton Upon Trent, around two miles away. Tutbury Health Centre houses both the Dove River Medical Practice and the Tutbury Practice, and there is also a dental practice in the village. Just before the roundabout, the entrance to Doves Keep is immediately on the left. From A50 Leave the A50 to join the A511 following signs for Burton Upon Trent. After three miles, at the Salt Box junction, turn right to stay on the A511 through Hatton. Pass over a level crossing, then at the roundabout take the first exit, signposted for Rolleston. At the next roundabout take the second exit, and immediately after leaving the roundabout the entrance to Doves Keep is on the right.
