3 Labels 11.2 Consultants Europe is a Technical and Legal organisation specialized in the CE mark, CE marking, CE certification and Authorized Representation of products. Labels are attached to almost everything we buy. They give us information about the product and what it is made from. Food labeling give important information about things like nutrition and cooking instructions as well as allergy issues. Labeling on clothes help us to take care of them.

4 Barcodes Give information about stock and price. They can give information about market trends and what people are buying. They can be linked to loyalty cards.

8 Signs and labels This is a warning sign for falling rocks and can be seen along many roads in the UK. It is self-explanatory as the image displays falling rocks. On UK roads, red triangles indicate a warning and red circles are mostly prohibitive. Some signs combine words and symbols. Task 1A In this triangle, design a sign to warn of noise from an army firing range 200m further up the road. Task 1B Design a sign that states that bicycles are banned from this road for the next four miles. Remember that red circular signs are mostly prohibitive.

9 Below are a familiar instruction sign and a less familiar hazard warning sign. Note that some hazard symbols are black with a yellow background. The biohazard sign is common in laboratories, hospitals and farms where pesticides are used. Task 2 Write the name of the hazards these signs are warning of in the space provided. Labels give information on how to use, care for and dispose of products or packaging. The difference between a sign and a label can sometimes be confusing. This Highly Flammable symbol is probably the simplest form of a label. It has a symbol that gives a warning. But it goes a little bit further by naming the product inside the packaging. For example, this label would be seen on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), telling you that it is highly flammable. It is the fact that LPG has been added to the sign which makes this a label.

10 Pictograms Simple ideograms without language and used in public places. Very similar to ideograms but much more simple block like images. Used in public places with out language. image identifies something directly ie. obvious

11 Ideograms Pictorial symbols used to communicate a message. With most ideograms, the meaning or the message is not obvious from the image. Just like Egyptian hieroglyphics, you may need to learn their meaning :0 Designing symbols and pictograms is a common exam question.

12 Flowcharts 11.5 Flowcharts are used to explain a process that needs to be followed. They have symbols in them so that we understand them and arrows to show the direction of actions. Design a flow chart for making a cup of tea or brushing your teeth. Key terms Inputs What you add to a process Outputs The final outcome of a process Feedback Information the operator needs during the process Operator The person who controls the process Flowchart A diagram which explains the process Operations Individual processes and functions Feedback loop The part of a flow chart which shows the operator where to go back to if necessary.

13 Sequential illustrations are simply a series of drawings showing the steps in a process of making something. This is used widely in making up flat pack furniture instructions or putting a model together. When producing one of theses drawings you must: Draw them in 3D Make them clear outline drawings (not coloured) Give each sequence a number to help the reader follow the diagram. 14 Schematic maps These are used to show the connection between places but they do not show the geographical distance. You will remember the London underground map that Harry Beck designed. These maps are found at bus shelters, on leaflets, railway stations, etc. They use straight lines to simplify routes.
