3 We use these activities during our Word Work time for Daily 5. We have used them as literacy stations in the past as well. We give each student a choice board on Monday. We explain each activity and show the students an example. Then students are allowed to choose any station activity they prefer. They will work the entire designated work time. Some students may finish more than 1 station and that is great. They all know that they MUST complete a MINIMUM of 5 activities by Friday. All activities work on the x, y, and z so it s ok if they don t get to everything! Station 1: My X, Y, Z Book: Students draw a picture on each page of a word that uses the x, y, or z sound. Then label the picture in the space below. Challenge: Students will write sentences about the pictures they draw. Station 2: Build a Word: Students will use letter tiles to build words with the x, y, or z sound. Challenge: Label, Cut, and Glue: Students color the pictures that have the x, y, z sound in the word. Then they cut them out, glue them to the mat, and label each word. Station 3: X, Y, Z Crossword: Students will look at the picture or read the clue, then find the word in the word bank. Students will then write the word in the crossword. Station 4: X, Y, & Z BINGO: Students will look at each picture and label. If the word has a x, y, or z, then they will color it. Can they find x, y, z in a row? Station 5: Cover Up: Students will choose a picture card. Then find the word on the game board and cover with a game piece or classroom manipulative. The friend that covers the most words or gets 3 in a row wins. Station 6: Stamp and Write: Students will pound the word with their fist, then tap each individual sound. After that, students will stamp the beginning sound and write the words in the boxes. Then students will write a sentence about one of the pictures. Station 7 Picture Sort: Have students sort the pictures onto the correct column (x, y, z). Have them label the pictures. Challenge: Same activity with more difficult words. Station 8: Back to Back Game: Students sit back to back with a partner. They draw a card from the bag. They give clues to their partner to help them guess the x, y, or z word on the card. Station 9: Puzzle Matching: Students will match the puzzle pieces to build words. Then students will sort by x, y, or z. CHALLENGE: Stations 1, 2, and 7 have additional pages that use the similar activity but with HIGHER skill levels needed to complete them. FREEBIE: Make it, Paint it, Tear it! Students can use art materials, paint, or torn paper to make a x, y, or z picture. Then write a sentence to tell about their creation. Challenge: Write a STORY about your picture. FREEBIE: Morning Work and Letter Writing Practice -Not on choice board. FREEBIE: CVC or CCVC Word List-Not on choice board. FREEBIE: Vocabulary Cards FREEBIE: Dictation: Formative assessment and instructions found at end of the pack.

19 Copy and laminate as many game boards as you would like. Students should play in small groups of 2 to 3 players. Copy and laminate the playing cards as well as the three different set of cover up pieces. As an alternative, students may use colored cubes from the classroom instead of the cover up game pieces which are either boxes, yo-yos or zebras. Students will take turns choosing a card, stating the name of the picture then finding the word and covering it on the game board with manipulatives like colored chips, cubes, or counting bears. If no classroom manipulatives are available, there are game pieces following the game board. In order to keep track of who covers a square, players should each use a set of objects that are different colors. For example, player one will only play with red manipulatives. Player two will use only blue... The friend with the most words covered or 3 in a row wins!! As an extension, instead of just looking at the picture and finding the words, students may also be asked to generate a sentence or tell how many syllables are in the word or even segment the word by the sounds in the words. Teacher may alter the directions depending on the skills that the students need.

48 We use the cards for a variety of skill work. The game is always the same format, but we switch the skill to work on whatever our students needs are at that time. Game Play: Give each student a vocabulary card. Have them walk or dance around the room to music. When you pause the music, they will stop and find the nearest partner. They will use their cards to work on whatever skill you have assigned. For example, we have assigned rhyming words. Students show their card, the partner reads the card, and then has to say a word that rhymes! Then the other partner gets a turn. Start the music again and continue to play finding new partners each time the music stops. Skills we work on: Rhyming words (Say the word and 1 or 2 words that rhyme.) Sentences (Say a detailed sentence using the vocabulary word.) Syllables (Clap and say how many syllable are in the word.) Blending (Cover the picture and blend to read.) 2013 Created by Kindergarten Squared
