The Expressive Writer Collector Card FOCUS This section will help you answer: a. What is the purpose of collector cards? b. What are the characteristics of collector cards? c. How can I create a history collector card? What is the purpose of collector cards? A collector card is a small rectangular card usually made out of thick paper which contains a picture on the obverse (the front) and information like text and statistics on the reverse (the back). In Canada, hockey collector cards are probably the most known example. Hockey collector cards are collected by young and old. For the young, it provides interest in trying to collect the series while passing on numerous tidbits of information. For the old, it can be a profitable hobby as well as keeping them connected to the game. Collector cards have also been made for television shows, musical groups, movies and cartoons. Collector cards began around the beginning of the twentieth century with manufacturers including baseball cards in a variety of products like bubble gum, snacks and even tobacco. Other professional sports followed suit and by late century there were hockey, football and basketball collector cards too. The first hockey collector cards came in cigarette packages from 1910 to By the 1950s, food companies included collector cards in their products and were followed by chewing gum companies who included several cards with a questionable piece of gum. Collector cards provide hours of enjoyment for a fan. Collector cards can also be quite valuable over a period of time. With sports collector cards some players cards become worth a great deal of money should the player turn into a superstar. Sometimes, collector cards are printed in limited editions, while others can increase in value due to their rarity. For example, a Wayne Gretzky rookie hockey card is worth a great deal of money because he went on to become the greatest offensive player in history. The card at the start of his career is worth more because as he became a star more people wanted his collector cards.
What are the characteristics of collector cards? To discover the basic characteristics of collector cards, let s look at some hockey cards. First, examine the obverse, or the front, of the following examples of collector cards featuring Canadian hockey legend Wayne Gretzky. Summarize the design features of the obverse side of the collector card on the work page that follows.
The Expressive Writer: The News Story Now, let s look at the reverse, or back side, of the collector card. This side contains the information about the player. It is here that the details about the player s career can be found. Look at the reverse sides of these hockey collector cards belonging to Gretzky. Using your work page, make a list of all the different design features that are used to give you information about the player, the league and the card maker.
Summarize the design features of the obverse side of the collector card Summarize the design features of the reverse side of the collector card
Teacher s Turn Create the obverse side for a history collector card by applying some of the design features to a person we studied in a previous activity, Martin Luther King, Jr. Step 1: Give the card a border Step 2: Identify Person and Country Dr. Martin Luther King The United states Step 3: Add a Picture Step 4: Identify a Category Dr. Martin Luther King Dr. Martin Luther King The United states The United states
The Reverse Side Let s create the reverse side of the history collector card by applying some of the design features using a person we studied in a previous activity, Thomas Edison. Step 1: Give the card a border Step 2: Identify Person and Series Born: Milan, Ohio February 11, 1847 Died: West Orange, New Jersey October 18, American Historic Collector Series Thomas Edison - Inventor Step 3: Add Inventions Born: Milan, Ohio February 11, 1847 Died: West Orange, New Jersey October 18, Step 4: Add trivia 81 American Historic Collector Series Born: Milan, Ohio February 11, 1847 Died: West Orange, New Jersey October 18, 1931 American Historic Collector Series printing telegraph phonograph to reproduce sound incandescent lighting system electric motor kinetoscope to reproduce pictures voltaic battery kinetoscope film projectors fluoroscope used with x-rays miner s electric safety lamp Thomas Edison - Inventor - printing telegraph phonograph to reproduce sound incandescent lighting system electric motor kinetoscope to reproduce pictures voltaic battery kinetoscope film projectors fluoroscope used with x-rays miner s electric safety lamp Edison had only 3 months of formal schooling! 7 Students Turn For practice, make the reverse side for Dr. Martin Luther King s collector card and the obverse side for Thomas Edison s collector card. Use the following two pages to plan out your collector card design. What will I include in my design for the back of Dr. King s card?
What will I include in my design for the front of Thomas Edison s card?
