4 The Park Club Mark and Willow had no yard. The park near their home had lots of old jars, rusty car parts, and hard, sharp rocks Reading Passage 1 One day, Willow fell on a rock, and it left a scar. I want a safe place to play, she said. The good parks are too far away I have an idea! We will start a club to clean the park! said Mark They made a Save the Park stand and had kids drop bills in a jar so they could buy a cart, some bark, and fifteen trash bins. All the kids did their part. They got rid of the trash and sharp rocks. They planted a yellow rose bush Now this place has some charm! said Willow. Now we can play until dark Unit 8 BLM Benchmark Education Company
5 You Can Be an Artist Reading Passage 2 You might think it s hard to be an artist. But you can make art out of the things you find in your backyard. Art does not have to be in a show or a park. You can make art just for fun. Make a face out of an alarm clock. Use milk cartons to create a robot. You can make art with scarlet yarn, small jars, part of a carpet, old greeting cards, or almost any other thing that people discard. Some artists make art with food. You might make people out of foods you find at the market. You could use green beans for legs and arms, garlic for a head, and parsley for garments. Once you start, you will find many ways to make art Benchmark Education Company Unit 8 BLM 4
6 Bart s Garden Bart s mother loves to garden. One day, she marks out a small part of her garden for Bart. She finds some seeds at the garden market. She gets Bart peas, garlic, artichokes, and parsley. Reading Passage 3 Bart does not know if he wants a part of the garden. He kind of hates artichokes. But he plants the seeds in the garden and waters them with the hose. In a week, tiny green plants poke up from the garden. Bart keeps them wet. Now he can hardly wait for his artichokes. Soon Bart harvests his plants. He eats the artichokes with the garlic and parsley. I hardly hate artichokes at all, he says Unit 8 BLM Benchmark Education Company
