3 District 14 Chess Fest Tournament Rules (as modified from FIDE Laws of Chess and Tournament Rules of the CFC) 1) The chessboard is placed between the players in such a way that the near corner square to the right of the player is white. 2) The Chess pieces are arranged on the board as indicated: 3) Players will determine who will have white pieces and go first by one player concealing a pawn of each color in their hands and the other player selecting a hand then using the color they selected. 4) A player who places the opponent's king 'under attack' in such a way that the opponent has no legal move which would avoid the 'capture' of the king on the following move checkmates his opponent and is the winner of the game. 5) All standard movement of pieces will be enforced see link below for specifics. Article 3: The moves of the pieces (Children may be unfamiliar with rules for castling, promotion and en passant so these may need to be reviewed.) 6) A piece that is touched is the piece to be moved on that turn, unless it places the player s king in check. 3
4 7) A move will be considered complete when a player picks up a piece and releases that piece on a square that is allowed by rules stated in Article 3. 8) Each game will be 10 minutes (straight time) in length. At the point the 10 minute clock expires and the whistle blows, a player who has a piece in hand can finish moving that piece and the game ends. a) A winner is declared resulting from checkmate. b) A winner is declared if the total point value for captured pieces of one player exceeds the other players total point value. (pawn=1, knight=3, bishop=3, rook=5, queen=9) c) If players tie on points the players continue to play 2 minute overtime periods until checkmate or a points winner is declared. 4
5 District Fourteen Chess Fest 2012 Facilitators Roles 1. At the beginning of each game they will check to see that all chess pieces are set up correctly on the games they are supervising. 2. Check to see if children are seated at the correct tables according to the brackets drawn up by director. 3. Check to see that children begin games when whistle blows and that white moves first. (This will be determined by one player concealing a pawn of each color in their hands and the other player selecting a hand then using the color they selected) 4. Help to solve any problems encountered involving rules of play. Children are encouraged to resolve disputes. 5. If during the game one player declares checkmate facilitator will go to that table and confirm that it is in fact checkmate and sends winner to director s table. 6. When the whistle blows to signal end of 10 minute Tournament Table games, students (with facilitator help if needed) will add up points for that table and declare a winner or begin two minute overtime (timed by facilitator). 7. Indicate to director winner of brackets and send winners to director s table where they can be paired with other winners for next round. 8. Send students who have been eliminated from tournament round to Tiger Tables for further play. 9. Turn cards on tables to designate Tiger or Tournament. 5
