3 Foreword This publication provides the monthly Consumer Price Indices for Uga (Composite) for the eight baskets of Kampala High Income, Kampala Low Middle Income, Jinja, Mbale, Masaka, Mbarara, Gulu Arua. All the baskets are for the urban households. The current Consumer Price Index was rebased from (July 1 to June 1 = 1) to (July to June = 1) using weights derived from the / Uga National Household Survey data. During the rebasing exercise, Kampala was decomposed into two baskets. In addition, Arua centre was incorporated into the Index. The number of elementary aggregates in the revised Index was increased from 1 to. At the elementary aggregate level, the indices are computed using the Jevons (Geometric Mean) method for all items within the elementary aggregates. The modified Laspeyres formula is used to compute higher level indices. The National CPI is computed as a weighted average of the eight baskets mentioned above. 4 Oct Nov Dec Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Annual % Change All Items Index Value Highlights of Consumer Price Index for October 1 1. ANNUAL INFLATION The Annual Headline Inflation for the year ending October 1 increased to. percent, compared to the. percent that was recorded for the year ended September 1. The main driver was Annual crops Inflation which rose to. percent for the year ending October 1 compared to the 1. percent increase recorded in September 1. The other driver was Annual EFU Inflation that accelerated to 11. percent for the year ending October 1 compared to the. percent registered during the year ended September 1, on account of the increase in electricity tariffs. However, the Annual Core Inflation declined to. percent for the year ending October 1 compared to the. percent recorded in September 1 (Table 1). 1.1 ANNUAL HEADLINE INFLATION BY CENTRE Mbarara center registered the highest Annual Inflation of 1. percent compared to the. percent recorded in September 1. This was driven by high price levels of food, electricity charges, clothing, footwear, medical services meals in restaurants. The second was Masaka center with an Annual Inflation of 11. percent compared to the 1. percent that was recorded during the year ended September 1. The main drivers were high price levels of food, electricity charges, clothing, footwear rent. Kampala Middle Low Income center registered the third highest Annual Inflation of.1 percent, compared to. percent recorded in September 1. The main drivers were high price levels of food, electricity charges, clothing footwear. For Inflation rates of other centers refer to Table FOOD AND NON-FOOD INFLATION registered an annual inflation of 1. percent for the year ending October 1 compared to the 1. percent recorded during the year ended September 1. The Annual Inflation for Services however, declined to. percent in October 1 compared to the. percent recorded for the year ended September 1 (Table ).. MONTHLY INFLATION The Headline Inflation for the month of October 1 rose by. percent from the earlier. percent rise recorded in September 1. This is mainly attributed to the crops Inflation that rose by.1 percent in October 1 from the earlier 1. percent food crops Inflation recorded in September 1. Inflation, which includes food crops processed foods, rose by.1 percent during the month. The drivers were the increase in prices of matooke, Irish potatoes, passion fruits, pineapples, mangoes, onions, tomatoes, green pepper, beans, maize flour sugar in most centers. However, there was a reduction in the prices for oranges, sweet potatoes, cassava, cabbage, sweet bananas, avocado, bitter tomatoes, eggplant, carrots, fish fresh milk. Similarly, the monthly EFU Inflation for October 1 increased by. percent from the. percent that was registered in September 1.The drivers were the increase in prices for petrol, diesel electricity tariffs.
